the only micro usb cables that will work with it are an old samsung wall charger and my mom's new samsung usb cable. everything else will either stop working after a half second or not at all. Even the cable that came with my phone stopped working after a few months.
i'm trying to trade cables with my mom so i can plug my phone into my pc but that only avoids the problem instead of addressing and possibly fixing it.
my first thought was a bad micro port but if that was the case i'd imagine no cables would work.
it's not a terribly pressing issue as i'm still capable of charging but it's preventing me from nerding out with custom roms and all that.
thanks for any help offered!
edit: i've tried manipulating the seemingly bad cords like holding them in different directions, resting the phone in certain ways, but nope.

That is weird. I have seen weird behavior similar to this with my daughters nook color as well... I would see about getting an actually moto replacement cord and see if that works.... phone is less than a year old by any chance is it?

The Triumph hasn't even been out a year...
I would contact VM and get a replacement from them... Others have problems with it not accepting other cables, but I personally haven't had any problems with mine and other cables... Its probably a problem with internal circuitry to the micro-usb. Just tell VM that your charging port isn't working properly or something like that and they should send you a replacement under the 1 year warranty...

assuming i have Titanium Backup and SMS Backup both with up to date backups, what would i lose on a new phone?
Or what you could do is backup your current recovery then replace it with CMW make a nandroid backup and replace CMW with the original recovery that you backed up, then just do the same on your new phone, but restore your nandroid backup... That will save all your apps, messages, settings, everything. You can follow this guide to do that just reverse the steps when returning it to stock recovery. Hope this helps!
Edit: also you can keep your phone from what I have heard until they send you a new one then you can just send them your old one within like 3 days or something like that... I haven't done it so I don't know exactly...

I know some Triumphs have had issues using cords other than the ones from the OEM. Your issue sounds similar (but obviously different). I would do like others have suggested and call them to get a replacement.
You can put the CWM recovery on the phone and make a nandroid (basically an image of the hard drive) and do the same to restore it. Here is a link to putting the recovery on your phone: [GUIDE] Installing CWM and a custom ROM on the Motorola Triumph
Just follow the first part until you do the making a nandroid part and stop. Then replace the recovery.img with the original. You can then put it on the replacement and restore the nandroid.
If you just use Titanium you would lose your setting like NA79 said, so it may not be worth messing with that if you are not worried about those settings.
