Hello.. I just wanted to start a thread to get some ideas and perspective on the triumph...
I have noticed that people are leaving virgin Mobile and the triumph.. Where are they going? What service? What phone?
I do love my Triumph but with iffey battery and a so so screen quality my eyes are looking elsewhere...
My question is this... Is there a prepaid network that supports unlocked phones? What is the purpose of an unlocked phone?
I want to find a good quality phone on a prepaid network.. I like my screen size..
What phones are people getting? What network? Unlocked phones work on certain networks?
Thanks guys, I love my Triumph but the dated technology has to change
I am currently looking into an unlocked gsm phone that is compatible with att and tmobile (because I hear those are compatible with straight talk)... Anyone using straight talk?
From what I hear you buy a sim card from straight talk and a plan then activate your unlocked phone with the sim they send you
Any GSM phone can be unlocked so there is not really a best one. Since depending on what you like you can get it unlocked. And I personally went to T-mo with the HTC Mytouch 4G Slide.
Well with T-mo you just buy a sim and can use it in any phone if it is a T-mo carrier locked phone or an unlocked phone. The only thing is, if a phone doesn't have the 1700/ 2100 bands it can't use 4g. And from what I understand if you flash a T-mo radio onto the Samsung Galaxy Note you can use T-mo 4g since the radio chip in it supports T-mo's frequencies just it's locked down hence the reason you need to flash a T-mo radio image.
And as far as plans go, you can buy a prepaid sim from their website then activate it online and choose a $30 plan that has unlimited everything, but talk (there are 100mins) and it has 5gb of 4g after that it is throttled down to 2g, then a $50 for unlimited everything I think 200mb of 4g though, $60 unlimited everything 2.5gb of 4g, and a $70 unlimited everything 5gb of 4g. You can also pay $15 a month for tethering capabilities.
Been running on Straight Talk for about 2 weeks now on an iPhone4.. speeds are EXCELLENT compared to VM. Call quality and signal are also wins over the Trumph.
You don't need an unlocked phone.. if you have a locked AT&T or Tmo phone you just order the SIM that corresponds. my iphone is AT&T locked (though I have the unlock in process) and you just pop it in and your basically golden once you update the APN (There's a website for iPhones to do this, don't even have to be jailbroken) MMS even works with a few tweaks even not jailbroken.
NOTE: Supposedly 2GB data limit.. Straight Talk is rebadged Tracfone.. and THEY DO NOT PLAY.. you go over on your data, you get a txt or call, you keep going, your gone, and you lost your number too.. but I'm on Wifi all the time so for me its a win.
Finding out that Straight Talk is Tracfone just put them on the "absolutely never" list. I briefly had Tracfone, and it was a nightmare. Six calls in three days, with "techs" lying to me, contradicting each other, etc., just to get working voice mail (at a point in my life when I was job-hunting while temping and NEEDED to have voice mail).

May I know how you got MMS working without a jailbreak? If you have a link to a tutorial, it would be great. I would love to get it working.

if you can't find let me know will look tonight.
Funny thing is. I didn't need to do it. MMS worked for me right out the gate. I read it too, but thought, why don't I try to send something first, and what do you know. MMS pictures sent and recieved from a verizon iphone perfectly.
My speeds aren't that bad (prl is 60686) I think 3g is a bit faster on the Stock based Roms rather then CM7...... and MIUI speeds are horrible :O
I was getting 480kb/s down and like 300kb/s up, on stock/cm7/and miui. Even in a metro area such as Seattle speeds would peak @ 900kb/s
I figured it was time to switch after no improvement over the course of two years and a half (had an intercept first) and the fact texting/data went down alot.
I'M... not going any where...I have a 25.00 a month plan which suits me fine...the Triumph phone which I find to be the best I have ever had, I think it is stupid to keep buying different phones just to have the "best" I look at it as the phone companies are making a killing on folks who keep buying different phones. I do not have the so called rooted phone, mine is just the plain phone. so in answer to your question.. some of us are not going anywhere!!! I'm not leaving either one!!!

Well you are the exception my friend... It's not about buying the best stuff when it comes out, it's about network stability and a phone you won't have to upgrade... As for your vanilla triumph I'm sure it suits you fine, just like I'm sure you are happy with you stock rom.. This thread is not directed at vanilla stock happy triumph owners but rooted, fed up with dated technology, want a stable network people.. Look, I love my 25 a month but the phone is killing it.. I agree that it does what it needs to do but when the company has no plans to support it from day 1 release, I tend to look elsewhere
went to AT&T with the iPhone on GoPhone plan. I'm looking to go elsewhere due to the recent changes to the data packages. Straight Talk looks the best but I don't necessarily use a lot of minutes.
Yup lol, i was so excited when i ordered this phone at first, then within 48 hours i was extremely angery lol, then i found this site and im happy lol
but im right outside the philadelphia area and for me anyway its all about compromises lol
AT&T = Best Overall Signal Coverage, actually had at&t for awhile and loved the coverage but they shafted me outta money every chance they could, then decided that my grandfathered in $80 unlimited everything wasent grandfathered in and they just changed it, or tried forcing me to
Sprint = Used to have the best data plan, i think at&t changed theirs to match it tho
T-mobile = tends to be expensive around here, altho pretty good customer support
Verison = Terrible signal in ALOT of areas lol
havent looked into cricket or MetroPCS
altho since going with cm7 my signal and data have been better in the data drop area, and im currently happy with my VM $60 Unlimited Everything Plan, so for now im not going anywhere lol

Why dont you switch you plan to the $55 a month for unlimited to save yourself $5 a month.

Not sure what you mean by "rooted", but, the triumph is technically already rooted out of the box
Code:
/system/xbin/su
/system/bin/su
You know your rooted when ...
$ su
#
Not a fan of sudo at all
I guess I am an exception also, I'm not going anywhere soon

Will never, ever happen, not with any phone, cell nor landline, computer or computer related... way to much money & politics involved and if and a big if, you can bet your life the USA would be dead last to have that kind of tec. There is just to much greed here and money to be made without it.

Logical that I need a terminal program in order to enter instructions.
That is the sort of program that one expects to be provided with stock telephone.
While many have expressed a dislike for their telephone, I have found the GPS to be reasonably fast and the other items also OK.
Thanks again. MapleSugar
