Not sure if anyone noticed this yet but the date on the xoom pictured on verzions page says Feb. 28th, Just wondering if that is a hint considering if it were really powered up it would say the date the pic was taken..

Wow, I never would have noticed that. I think you are definitely on to something, Sanjay Jha specifically said February at CES so this wouldn't surprise me. This is particularly exciting for me because I'll be eligible for an upgrade starting Feb 28 since I got my Incredible on a one year contract, and I'm debating getting an iPhone 4 on a one year contract and selling it for some quick cash and getting a Xoom instead of upgrading my phone. I wouldn't mind sticking with my Incredible for another 10 months and waiting until December to upgrade when the real killer android phones come out.
Edit: Here's a higher res version of the same photo that's on Verizon's site...

I don't think they do anything by accident, but I would be surprised if they launched on a Monday, especially if they did a midnight launch.
I would agree, more likely a pre-order date than a go to the store and get it date. When I got my Incredible, pre-orders started at 12:01 a.m. Monday morning. I ordered mine by 12:06 a.m. If they do that then expect them to be delivered a day or two early to pre-order folks before they hit the main stores.

If that's the case, I know what I'll be doing early Feb 28th morning...

Honestly, I'm thinking pre-orders will start shortly after Mobile World Congress (2/14-2/17). It wouldn't surprise me if pre-orders started 2/18, with expected ship date of 2/28.
...they will "leak" a decent piece of information every week or so from now until launch. They can't let the excitement die down, so doing this would keep it at the top of everyone's minds.
Be nice, but not seeing how Honeycomb will be ready then. Just look how long it took Moto to get a stable 2.1 and 2.2 out and those were out months before Moto even updated.

I sense a delay to end of March.
Agreed, but that was because Moto was busy adding Blur to this. With most Android releases, Google finishes the OS and then Moto has to make it work on their platform.
Since this is Google's test hardware, I doubt Moto has much to do with it at this point -- Google is working on it, refining it, etc. When Google is done, it'll be ready to ship with no Moto tweaking necessary.

Well, we don't really know how far along Honeycomb is, but it's always been rumored that Google will have it ready for Mobile World Congress (2/14-2/17). During his interview with Engadget, Matias Duarte didn't put up any fight about a possible February launch.
Also consider that the Eclair (2.0) SDK wasn't released until 10/26/09, and the Moto Droid (running 2.0) was released only 10 days later.
The day the Xoom releases,
I will definitely be showing up to Verizon early before they open.
I can honestly say that I am equally excited, quite possibly more excited over the Xoom, than I was for the X.
I'm past ready to stop lugging my laptop around.

i would be more geeked if i could put programs like pokerstars on it..
That would be sick!
I imagine it will only be a matter of time, since Android does nothing but grow bigger and better.
300,000+ activations per day would catch my attention as a dev in a heartbeat!
Honestly, waiting for the next 24 days is going to suck. Then again, it's better than waiting for 65 days, which would technically be the end of 1st quarter.

Just hope the 2/17 date is accurate.
Me too. Cautiously optimistic though because 2/17 seems like a viable date in that VZW usually launches products on Thursdays, and also this would be the last day of MWC and would allow Google to show off the final product to the world just prior to the launch. Still just a rumor at this point of course ..

It seems that rumored 2/17 date is much less certain recently after the Motorola earnings call the other day.
Jha apparently first mentioned the "End of" February, and then later in a Q & A session apparently mentioned that the release could slip to March. I guess we won't know anything until an official announcement of course, but many sites are reporting this latest date rumor, 1 being here.

I don't know ... I wouldn't call it a "delay" really at this point. The only official mention of a release date from either Moto or VZ was "first quarter". I know Jha at CES may have mentioned "February" off hand, but again no official specific date was ever pointed to. All indications seem to be that it will be released in the "first quarter". Some screen shot leak of a Best Buy inventory system had 2/17, which spread like wild fire, but no one actually announced that date, so I don't think anything can be considered delayed legitimately. This is quite a change for Android and I would expect them to have to tweak it as time goes by here. Hopefully it will be ready sooner rather than later ..
As far as the changing marketplace, to me there is only 1 "real" tablet to compete with - the iPad - and soon iPad 2. Since the iPad came out, IMO the only change in this space has been the addition of many many sub-par tablets. I don't think the space has changed much at all, just grown crowded with crap(maybe except for the Tab). But it's actually this device, the XOOM, that will start to change the tablet market I believe, as it will be the first Honeycomb Android true tablet experience.
As for the $799, hard to argue that point, but there are other threads for that topic
Someone that is running that facebook site for Best Buy is going to lose their head and most-likely their job if that wasn't a scheduled "leak." I work in PR and using social media, as everone knows, is one of the best and most effective ways to spread the word, short of mass media.
I, like everyone else on this and many other android forums, am hoping for a release date VERY SOON on the Xoom but I fear for that person's job if that wasn't scheduled.

Verizon didn't make them take it down, the company did. Individual store facebook pages are run by employees in the store. The associate took it upon themselves to release rumored information. No release date has been leaked to Best Buy employees yet.
When the page got all that attention, the company saw it and made them take it down. The stores are all encouraged to have their own page, but there just isn't a way to audit the posts of over 1000 stores all the time.

Hmm. A/C has the Thunderbolt being released on 2/24. If true I wonder if this is bad news for a XOOM potential release date. VZ wouldn't release them both on the same date I would think, would they?

I was asking myself the same question. There is still a lot of people saying thunder is coming 13-14. In any case we have a tablet and a smart phone, so it's not like there competing for the same buyers.

considering they are totally different products types (smartphone vs tablet) and from different companies i don't see why they wouldn't release both at the same time... of coarse i am biased because i want the xoom on the 24th

I guess I am asking myself THIS question, if this is supposed to be out in the next week to 2 weeks, where is the preorder?? Or will there be one? I mean those usually come about a week before release, maybe 10 days, so we should be seeing SOMETHING, ANYTHING soon....I hope.
For reals, there hasn't been any offical news about the Xoom since the motorola earnings call with Sanjay. If were really 2 weeks away I don't see why they wouldn't say "yes the 24th the xoom will be released, and it will be priced at X amount." I'd bet were looking at march release if nothing is said between now and next friday. My only hope for february release is that guys like chad johnson already have them in there hands.
Maybe they are planning on doing some kind of announcement at the MWC next week. Seems a little late to me. If you want people who haven't used android before to buy one of these things, they have to know it exists.

I agree whole heartedly but part of me thinks that the xoom is aimed at the more "die-hard" android fan base out there. Or atleast people that are familiar with the tablet tech industry. I would like to think that the xoom would be a great intro/"welcome to android" product BUT the supposed $800 pricetag would argue otherwise. No newbie to android would pay that.

i think the timing will line up nicely. this is how i would think about it, at MWC next week rebuild the hype the xoom already has then during the show "and the xoom will be out on the 24th for $xxx and pre-orders will start tomorrow".
give it that kind of here is a cool product and even cooler you can get it now type thing that alot of companies are doing. then they can ride the hype from MWC into the pre-orders which tech news sites will report and talk about right into launch.

So Mashable just ran a story regarding Samsung's specs for its new Galaxy Tab that will be reveiled sunday night at MWC. At the very end of the story they say, "Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system that's due to launch on February 17." I know it isn't much but for a news site like Mashable to toss a "fact" out like that is pretty substantial.
IF HC is due to be LAUNCHED on the 17th, this means that there has to be a tablet to put said operating system on, therefore, something is coming...in a week.
I could see Google releasing the SDK on that date, since it's the last day of Mobile World Congress. Releasing the Xoom on that date is unlikely, but possible I guess. It wouldn't surprise me if Google released the SDK for Honeycomb, and Motorola gave the official launch date for the Xoom, with pre-orders starting 2/17. After all, they're both going to be at MWC.
BUT! This seems to confirm the required data plan for the xoom that was stated in the BB flyer.
That it does, which means that BB's ad is coming to fruition fact by fact. As I am already sold on buying one, all I need is a date and I can breath a small sigh of relief.
PS - Whom ever does the BB ads need to utilize spell check, they SUCK.
Keep in mind BB also said before christmas 2010 they were getting a samsung galaxy tab wifi only. So I take anything they spew out with a grain of salt. Also seems that typo for activate is still there hmm...

I am sure we are all aware that this BBY ad has been discussed in HEAVY detail in many other threads/forums but I am starting to think that if they have put this in ad form and someone has gotten a pic of it, it seems to be true. I am bothered by the spelling issues but it would take A LOT to fake that ad.
So we are looking at a date of the 24th to purchase the Xoom in the store but we still are looking for a preorder date...anyone??

So... The first VZ 4G LTE phone ever, and the first Honeycomb tablet ever released at the same stores on the same day.. I still have my doubts, but signs do seem to point this way. I'll wait for something official. Also, I wouldn't be happy about the longer lines

I will not be happy about the lines either as I will be buying the Xoom and then pretty much going straight to work.
Also, IMO, Best Buy, VZW or Motorola could probably care less about lines...I mean they are selling as you stated, the FIRST VZ 4G LTE phone and FIRST Honeycomb Tablet. They are HOPING to spike their sales right away this year. But I would also like to hear some OFFICIAL news.
