That's busted. Did you contact developer? If not you should and let them know. Especially since what you're describing is their selling point. :-( http://www.mapleworks.com/software-products/overview-software-products/android-note-taking-app/

is it just me or did that sound like i just got my problem stiffed for an undetermined time? idk about anyone else... but this does not make me happy. one of their selling points is busted and it is a feature that is essential to it working right, and they just blew me off?

no i feel they were being upfront and honest. they could have said "ooh we should have a patch within the week.." then the week gets here and passes and no app. THATS bad PR.

hey im new to tablets and want to get the xoom and use it for my engineering classes. One of the things I really want to use the xoom for is taking notes. It would replace my stacks of note pads, and I could email the notes right from the xoom.

I've tried typing and writing, and each has its advantages and disadvantages. I'd rather have typed notes, since I can work with them in a word processor, and others can add comments easily after they're distributed.

But... I need to be able to include diagrams within the notes, so I need to be able to type, draw a picture and annotate it, and then continue typing.

Is there anything like this out there?
any help is appreciated

Don't hate me, but I would recommend finding a Windows tablet that could run OneNote. It is perfect for doing exactly what you're looking for. I've been looking all over for an application like that for Android, but haven't found anything like that.
The closest thing that I found was Note Everything. It takes typed notes, photos, videos, audio and lets you draw. I don't think you can have everything on one page but you could keep them in the same project. They've been trying to make it more integrated but I don't think we're there yet.
One idea I have to try is to grab one of those programs that lets you annotate a PDF. Make yourself a blank one page PDF file, put it in that program and maybe you can mark it up that way? I don't know if by "annotate PDF" they mean highlight and make notes or if you can scribble on it as well. I might look into that myself later.

You need a pen tablet to do note taking properly. The problem is they are very expensive and not as light as android tabs.

damn it cause i really want to justify getting a Xoom haha do you think that using a stylus and Maplepaint could give me the same effect as writing/ drawing on a piece of paper? and is legibility and accuracy a problem?

How are those 2 in terms of sensitivity, and overall readability? If you've tried maple paint how would you say they compare?

Aw man, that sounds perfect. Haven't seen *any* Android app like that that can deal with your hand on the screen. Hopefully they'll put something out for Android tablets now.

Ooh! Check out Genial Writing. It takes your input, then shrinks it down and aligns on note paper. Haven't tried all the features yet, but there's a free version, check it out.

If I could combine this with photos/drawing it would be perfect. Genial Writing! I also want to try Dio Note which seems to do it but does not have a free trial version.

Yeah I mentioned Genial Writing above- I'm pretty impressed. You can also export the notes into Evernote, as well.

I have a feeling that it's your post that lead me to it. I agree with your opinion about it. I messed up, it isn't Dio Note, it's Dio Memo. (Good thing the link worked.)

Hey I like that app, I have a few stylus for the Nintendo DS, you can usually find a pack of 3 or 4 of those for $3 and that might work.

Default Handwritten notetaking in PowerPoints?

I am a nurse who uses the Xoom on the clinical floor for medication tracking, taking handwritten notes, teaching patients about their condition, etc. I am currently looking for a way to take "on the slide" handwritten notes while in a PowerPoint during meetings or presentations. I have both Quickoffice HD and Docs to Go Premium to view them (prefer Quickoffice HD). Does anyone know of an app or way to make this happen? Thanks in advance!

You can get Pen Reader. It kind of replaces your keyboard. You can switch back and forth with input types fairly easily but they need to do some more work to make it seamless. The handwriting recognition isn't bad at all.

Some of the reviews mentioned it lagging on the xoom...are you experiencing that? Also, can you save your files, or email them only? (Again, just reading reviews.)

It has been worth every penny and all tnhe physicians use it to do research whenever I set it down...I need to figure out a way to charge them back for that!

Default handwriting to text

works fairly well 10 bucks though, if you have xoom your not worried about being an early adopter...

Hm, I don't mind being an early adopter, but I kinda mind paying $10 for it. If anyone else tries I'd love to know how it works.

its not my every day keyboard (tablet k eyboard free) but it does work well. on the xoom you can handwtite 2 lines of text before converting it to type in the field.

not worth 10 maybe 5 but i need a keyboard that does what it does and right now its the only option i have found. accuracy is pretty good. was not blown away but i didnt have to correct it too often.

I had NoteShelf on my iPad and haven't found a replacement yet on Honeycomb.

The main features I'm looking for:
-Wrist protection: You *need* to be able to lay your hand on the screen while writing. Wrist protection that works well is very nice.
-Multiple notebooks
-Syncing to an external source (I'd always sync to Dropbox after class with NoteShelf)

That's the bare minimum I'd look for. When there's an app that does that, someone let me know! If there isn't one by mid-may I might have to make it myself! :P

I'm gonna try out MaplePaint, but I'd rather pay $5 for a more featureful app, especially one that has a Honeycomb based UI.

Re: Styluses:
I had the HTC capacitative stylus for a while, but the tip that you write with is made of plastic. Bend it just a little bit, and it stops working. Very poor design.
I got an Elago Stylus for the iPad, and it worked fantastically. Even though it says iPhone, it of course works on any capacitative screen. I highly recommend it. The tip is made of rubber and is compressible, so it's very nice against the screen.

*subscribing*

Edit:
Tried maplepaint. Works great but it *needs* wrist protection. I can't write very well without resting my hand on the tablet.

Genial Writing still doesn't have wrist protection, but it has multiple notebooks, and you can export to Evernote, not sure about other than that. I like it way better thanMaplepaint though.

Ok..thanks... I was thinking you had software that integrated with the hospitals system since all hospital are required to go paperless in the near future...so you could do patient charting, look up xrays, etc...

What if you converted PowerPoints to PDFs and then used RepliGo Reader (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.cerience.reader.app&feature=search_ result)?

Yeah, that would be ideal but because the Xoom is my personal tablet I am not able to connect to the system (HIPPA).

Hey converting the PP to PDF and using RepliGo worked like a charm...thank you! Now I just have to figure out how to change "ink" colors in RepliGo!

Ok...figured out the color issue...after writing something it pops up a window to make those changes...

Just for the info, I develop a handwritting notepad app for Android and I try to bring the best of IPad apps like Penultimate, Notes Taker HD.
Just give a try to TabNotes (trial version is free) and let me know your feeling regarding this application.

I'm working hard on providing PDF export which should be available by the end of the week.

works fairly well 10 bucks though, if you have xoom your not worried about being an early adopter...
I bought this and like it a lot. I'm giving Tabnotes a try, too.

writepad seems good however an early reviewer who seems to be left handed states its not good for left handers.

if any of you cats are left handed and use writepad, let me know your thoughts. i am looking for an app just as this that turns what you write into text.

Hi Guy!
I was so glad to see Tabnotes – finally something close to ideal for notetaking , sketching schematics and line drawing. Thank you for the great work!

I am currently evaluating Tabnotes Trial on my Motorola Atrix and I can do most things well - draw, zoom in/out, pan etc. However, I find that every time I tried to click on the ‘send’ button, I get an error message saying “Lack of memory – Unfortunately your device has not enough memory to complete this operation. Tabnotes cannot run correctly on it.”. Also, get the same message sometimes when I start drawing something and then rotate the device from landscape to portrait or vice-versa.

This seems a bit extreme – does Tabnotes only work for Tablets? The Motorola Atrix has built-in 16G of storage space with 1G RAM. How much "available RAM" minimum does it need before all functions are fully operational?

Thanks.

Hey everyone, no one has replied to this thread in a while, but so far I've found Evernote+skitch to satisfy my typing/drawing needs.

I'd love to see notes plus, but for now nothing else allows me to combine handwritting and typing (into an elegant interface).

A nice GUI is KEY to note taking apps. Maybe I have ADD, but if you give me an ugly background I'm going to be constantly distracted.

Just a thought I had...I am going to get a xoom soon...before I made my final choice I wanted to get the htc flyer...now that I know that I want to get the xoom do you think the stylus that comes with the Flyer might be able to be used along with the erase and highlight buttons attached to the stylus? or if you got the same app on the xoom that is on the Flyer to use it the same exact way? I know that the Flyer is running gingerbread and don't know if that makes much of a difference

I like penultimate a lot. I'd like to see something like that on Android. Drawfree is pretty good for hand writing but I don't think it has any keyboard functionality if you're looking for that feature.
Has anyone tried Handrite? I've been using that app with a stylus for note taking. You can also type with it. I like the fact that you can write as large as you want and when you're done writing, the app resizes and aligns it on the page for you. If you would rather type, you can pull up the keyboard. It's not perfect but it seems to be a reasonable compromise.
For pdf readers, Repligo Reader is excellent. You can annotate, highlight or markup a pdf easily and the file system isn't too combersome. Another worth consideration is ezPDF Reader. It's very good but the file system is less convenient to work with.

I'm waiting for Aji to come out with i-Annotate for Android. This is a great pdf app but at the moment it's Apple only. I've been talking to the devs at Aji and they tell me they are shooting for the Android version release in the 4th quarter of this year. Hope they can do it.

For PDF markup, try qPDF Notes by Qoppa Software. Open any PDF, add text notes, highlights and free-form drawings, as well as fill interactive PDF forms. qPDF Notes accesses, saves, and sends PDFs via email, Dropbox, Bluetooth or SD cards.
