Going to buy one off of Amazon today/tomorrow. Is it better (easier) for a non techie (like me) to ensure it comes with 3.1? In other words, is it a pain to go from 3.0 to 3.1?

Hey fellow non-techie,
It was a breeze to go from 3.0 to 3.1. Just follow the steps mentioned in this thread to move the date forward a day (if you don't get the update when you turn on the Xoom the first time) temporarily, then reboot, and recheck the automatic date and time box to get the correct time back once you are done with the update. Make sure you have wifi connection.

none for me yet. to those who got it...does it fix the typing lag in the browser?
I noticed a smoother experience typing with the stock browser (unrooted) and the same sites I frequent with lots of Flash also runs smoother. I went back to the stock keyboard layout just to test and it was smooth but went right back to Thumbs and Tablet keyboard shortly after and those had no lag.
What I don't like about the new browser is the big and small (+) plus sign tabs in the new Quick Controls. The large plus tab lets you open a new window; but every time I click on the small plus tab, it takes me back to the previous window and removes the current one. Subsequent clicks on the small plus tab eventually removes all windows until the browser closes. It should have been a minus sign tab lol.
Got my update this morning. first impressions, does feel snappier scrolling through windows and opening up programs. Notice the Wifi icon now shows send receive activity. I like the ability to size the widgets. The new Videos app/icon is nice giving you a new means to access rentals and personal videos. When using it to access the videos on the device has a similar layout to the google ebooks layout with the arcing scroll feature. So far enjoying it.

Got my notification this morning but I wasn't thinking when I hit the button and since I am rooted it didn't install still says HRI66 and 3.0.1 and that I am up to date. I have the signed file from Google's server so I will be working on it later. Gotta wait for my lunch break. Or at least for other shit to settle down, stupid job...
3g here as well Wisconsin also bought mine on release day. Like I said the crappy part is I am going to have to turn off fast boot I think and rework a few things. Lately I have not been doing anything on my XOOM that requires root so I might just do that and take it back to a stock 3.0.1 and move the file over manually. and see what I can do with it.

It still has problems with vBulletin. Honeycomb + the crapware that is vBulletin = crap on a tablet.

That's not a plus sign, it's an x!

So can anyone comment on the movie rental? I'm pretty curious. what's the selection like? How soon do they get the movies? How is playback? Is it streaming only or can you download?
Three tabs total "Android Apps" "Books" and "Movies"
yeah im seen the old market.. i guess i just have to wait untill i get the new version of the market, i already tried deleting the app's data but no luck...
but i think are supposed to see a "videos" app with the update.. check this video @ 22:07 YouTube - GoogleDevelopers's Channel you can see the icon for the app
You may have to clear the cache for the market for the new tabs similar to the phones. Also I have been through the update there is an APK on there called movies. I assume you have to go to the market and will list what is available for you to watch. I will not no more until I get mine unrooted and updated though. Go to applications manage and then under all find the market. Do a force stop and then clear cache you do not need to delete data or clear data then you should be able to launch the market with the new version.

You are right. Just checked my Xoom. I didn't notice it before (on page 2 of the apps) but yes, when you select / shop it takes you to the Movies tab in the Market.
anyone else feel like this new movie feature is really google saying w/e to netflix? I hope not !
Naw, I think it's more an answer to "there's no way to download movies to watch when you don't have a signal!" (I checked, you can download anw atch offline). More like an answer to iPad's iTunes option. IPad has iTunes and Netflix, don't see why Android wouldn't want both, too. I still plan on using PlayOn, but nice to know there's a non-streaming option, too.

Would the Widevine DRM that will come with this update satisfy the need for DRM for protected content? Would this bring Netflix to the XOOM and other services that require DRM for protected content?
Speaking of the update today I got my Beta Invite for google music on my XOOM. I use a separate google account on my XOOM since my fiance and I share it and it generally sits at home. So far the service is pretty sweet.
Not sure but it sounds like Google is rolling out the invites to anyone with a XOOM I never even signed up for the beta on that account. The account I use on my three Android phones I signed up for but have not gotten the invite.
I have my personal and work emails on my XOOM. My personal being my primary and the one where all my settings are backed up on... I got an invite to my work account, which makes me mad cuz I need to surrender that account in a couple of months... I want my invite to the right account!!!
I'm starting to get angry...Verizon didn't sell too many XOOMs it shouldn't take this long to push the update to all users. I could see if there have been some issues with the update, I haven't heard of any.
Come on Verizon...flip the switch and get the rest of us who paid $800 for this "beta" tablet the update.

Given that Motorola announced on Facebook and Twitter today that WiFi Xoom's would not be getting the movie app "yet", it might be prudent for responses to also include whether or not they are 3G or WiFi Xoom's...

One of the popular perks included Google's inclusion of the new USB host API to let users plug peripherals into a Honeycomb tablet. This will allow users, for example, to import photos from their digital camera to their tablet.
you will get an update message if you turn on your screen and. or an update icon in the notification tray bottom right.

How will I know when the update is available to me - a little notification icon or the like will pop up somewhere?
i turned on the screen this AM and saw the message waiting. took about 4 minutes-ish. i will connect my dinovo edge BT keyboard to have trackpad and full keyboard functionality. ive got the camera connection kit (which i also use to charge the evo... and my mifi hotspot).
