streaming was never free from netflix. you always had to pay for streaming.
the only difference is they are splitting the physical DVD/BD rentals and streaming apart.

I'll split the difference with you.
They
raised the price for streaming prior to enabling Xoom/Netflix functionality.

Streaming has always been $7.99. They raised the price of getting physical media, not streaming.
The new apk works great on my Xoom as well as my HTC Inspire 4g

Link in first post. Make sure you go to settings and check "allow non market apps to be installed" if you haven't already done so.

O_o I don't remember it being 8.99... No matter. It's still a decent value.

Is this not optimized for the Xoom? The picture seems very stretched out and extremely poor quality. I have a wifi only Xoom and a solid wireless-N connection.

I installed the "unofficial version" then uninstalled to reinstall this one... should I be doing something else?

are you rooted? this can make the difference.
try and re-install the old version. see if you can .. if it allows you and you are able to view a video, then go and update (or see if the system will auto update for you) and let the installer in the market overwrite the previous install from you.
should not be anything you need to do. the update should have happen without you doing anything else on your end.

I am not rooted, and unfortunately I did try what you said and I still get the error just after selecting the update "package file was not signed correctly"

ok next question..
do you have the 3G/LTE or wifi version?
so you can use the old netflix app but you cant update to the new one?
perhaps you should go to manage apps, force close netflix, clear cache and data then uninstall from there.
try again....
