Reading these I realise I don't know anything about music recorded after 1995.

And I only have a passing familiarity with stuff from the decade before that.

To think - I used to be so clued up ..

Big Star
The Replacements
The Runaways
Wire
Pixies
Fleetwood Mac (over-appreciated for the wrong reasons, under-appreciated for albums such as Tusk)
Jeffrey Dean Foster (look him up, you won't be disappointed)
Roxy Music
The Black Angels
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Smog
Bon Scott era AC/DC... no, sorry, Back in Black is not their best album
The Troggs
Blonde Redhead
The Hives
Adam Ant
Tom Waits
Badfinger
all local bands that deserve to be famous in place of the myriad of shitty bands both past and present that made it big

... I could go on and on.

(obviously these are bands that are under-appreciated by "the mainstream")

I agree that Grand Funk is underappreciated now, but in most of the 70s they were bigger than LedZep in the US.

Others underappreciated now:

Stray
Ten Years After
Mott the Hoople
The Stooges
The Groundhogs

A lot of groups copy these groups now since a generation of time to wait and copy and sound "new" again.

Gasp! Thats blasphemy! haha jk! Not many people know that there was another singer besides Brian, let alone know about the one before Bon.

I myself cannot name in my opinion their best album, but the album that put them in the charts really was Highway to Hell.. Sad to say but I really think Bon's death would have gone much more unnoticed if it were not for that album, then AC/DC would not have had their record shattering success with Back in Black.

it seems a lot of the older bands are becoming a bit underappreciated now.. such a shame

Underappreciated -

New York Dolls - no NYD's, possibly no Ramones
Rockpile - Dave Edmunds & Nick Lowe - awsome songwriters - only 1 album
Mott - 70's glitter rock at it's best
T Rex - Marc Bolan led the trail for Bowie
