As some of you may have seen from the "What Are You Listening To" thread I have a pretty diverse taste in music. I listen to hip-hop, R&B, soul, neo soul, hard rock, metal, alternative rock, grunge, classic rock, trance, techno, classical, and country. Maybe there's a few more I haven't listed but I like to listen to all types of music pretty much.
I generally stick to R&B, classic rock, alternative rock, grunge, any genre related to electronic (trance, techno, etc..) but also sometimes hip-hop although I must admit new hip-hop is absolutely terrible with very very few exceptions to a few songs/artists.

Agreed about new hip-hop although there's some exceptions. One guy I've been listening to lately is XV. I like his stuff and he's under the radar. It seems like once rappers hit the mainstream they sell out to the fame and money. I use to like Lil Wayne back in the old days before he exploded with this whole Young Money and rock experimentation crap. Same is going to happen to Drake, don't know why he signed with Young Money. Right now hip-hop actually has some hope compared to the past, lots of young blood. J. Cole, XV, Cudi, and Big Sean are just a few. There's also Jay Electronica, Charles Hamilton, Joell Ortiz, etc. I think you might like an artist called Blu. Check him out.

I'm a very mainstream kind of person, which isn't bad! I like pop, pop/rock, pop/r&b, basically... anything pop. I also like r&b, rock, foreign music (Korean, French, Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Spanish), Asian folksy music, classical music, the absolutely spectacular works from Joe Hisaishi (he has made the soundtracks to Miyazaki movies), and umm... some other genres too.
One thing that I can't stand is autotune. I understand if it is used ONLY as a simple effect or a small correction on a few notes, but when artists use it ALL the time... it is extremely annoying. I can't stand listening to robots. Artists like Ke$ha, T-Pain, Lil' Wayne, and others like them... awful. Something that I really like about country is that autotune hasn't really penetrated as much as pop, especially pop, and artists still have to know how to sing to succeed in that genre. I still don't really like listening to country music though, only a few select artists that have a country + pop feel.

I'm really into prettymuch every sub-genre of rock and metal. I actually got my first Android product just for music. It's an Archos 5 Internet Tablet 500GB. I got it so I could have all my music with me all the time and run simple last.fm scrobbler in the background. It runs Android 1.6, I think they called that one Donut. It's the perfect mp3 player and great for movies too.
I'm into electronic, rock, hip-hop, indie and alternative, including:

I didn't mean all mainstream artists, I just implied the bad ones like you mentioned
I myself can't listen to hardcore/true country music.

We have pretty much the same taste in rock music with some exceptions to the bands listed above.
You gotta keep in mind that some of those bands I haven't listened to in forever, Last.fm has been tracking everything I listen to since '05 and those are just my most played bands, Latley I've been into Deadmau5, QotsA, Jay-Z, White Panda (and other mashups), Some old Eminem, and Gorillaz

Oh I didn't even know about your little comment on mainstream artists until this. lol I was like "What is he talking about?" hehe.
+1 for not being able to listen to hardcore music. I'm assuming you mean like heavy metal, death metal, and such, right? I can't stand people screaming at me in person, so I definitely will not pay to listen to people scream at me with a little tune. lol

Yeah death metal is one and screamo is another lol. I think there's only one semi-screamo song I like but then again I've never really made a conscious effort to listen to the genre. I just don't want someone screaming the entire song.
The Airborne Toxic Event

Mostly metal/hard rock. Killswitch Engage and Tool are quite possibly the best bands around right now. But I listen to all different kinds except for hip hop/rap, some of the older stuff was good but the new crap is just horrible. I could care less how many houses, cars and gold chains these douches have and that seems to be all they sing about.
Anyways, some examples: NIN, old Manson, Metallica(Black albumn and back), Tori Amos, Amon Amarth, As I Lay Dying, old country(when it was still country), System, Lady Gaga, Trance/House techno, Five Finger Death Punch, Trivium, Foo Fighters, Black Tide, H.I.M. and many many more.
I like ska, ska-punk, punk, and country shows.
If you Los Angeles mofos knows of a kick ass show coming up lemme know.

Its not hard if you learn to appreciate the differences.
As you can probably guess from the username, I love Muse. I've seen them several times live and they just blow my socks off. My love for Matt Bellamy shows no bounds.
I also really like Biffy Clyro, Elbow, 30 Seconds to Mars, Foo Fighters.... I enjoy rock music probably above all other genres
I quite like Plan B right now too, along with Example. I guess they're more hip-hop?
I haven't bought the album yet, but probably will, Strike! by the Baseballs. I have no idea why it appeals. It just does!
I've loved Gorillaz since Demon Days, so I bought Plastic Beach with much anticipation but I really dislike it. Stylo is a genius track but everything else just doesn't seem to fit. I feel like I shouldn't call myself a fan, but I really really do not like their new stuff and their headline at Glasto felt really uncomfortable to watch

Exactly.. If you take things for what they are its hard not to like most music IMO.. Obviously if your listening to 50 your not looking for much content.. but thats ok if you can just accept that.. I don't get why people hate on pop music either.. Ya its written by like 50 people... over produced, over marketed, and the artist usually have little to do with the actual album.. but put that aside a lot of its catchy and nice if your in the right mood.

I'm mostly into rock of many genres, but can and will listen to anything except jazz. I just don't get jazz. At all.
Fave bands; Thunder (now split up, sadly ) Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Gun, Little Angels... then the other stuff I like, such as Spin Doctors, Hootie & The Blowfish, Mark Germino, Storm Large and 70s/80s soul like Sam & Dave, Otis Redding and such like.

one day i'd like to see belphegor or something pop up in the top charts with a single and see if the masses who just listen to what's popular would pick it up...
Meh. As soon as i post this i'm going to feel like an outcast. But.. I listen to Post-Hardcore. Bands that would be considered "screamo" but heres a short list.
Underoath
Silverstein
DanceGavinDance
The Devil Wears Prada
Asking Alexandria
Alesana
I Set My Friends On Fire
A Day To Remember
My tastes change almost daily... but for the most part it's metal, blues, jazz, funk and some R&B. No country or rap, ever.
A sampling of what's on my iPod right now:
Motorhead
Led Zeppelin
old-school Metallica
Stevie Wonder
Muddy Waters
Howlin' Wolf
ZZ Top
George Clinton/Bootsy Collins/Parliament Funkadelic
Godsmack
Allman Brothers
S.O.D.
Kim Wilson/Fabulous Thunderbirds
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Kenny Wayne Shephard
old-school Anthrax
Jonny Lang
Suicidal Tendencies
Manowar
Megadeth
Wilson Pickett
James Brown
Suffocation
Buddy Guy
John Lee Hooker
B.B. King
Iron Maiden
Slayer
Black Sabbath
Red Hot Chili Peppers
My main 3 favorite types of music are
kpop
dance
hiphop/r&b
I love pop groups...lol. korea has THE best pop groups EVER. At least right now, nobody can touch them. I mean, they have at least 3 or 4 WEEKLY tv shows dedicated to music performances. America has NONE.
Hip hop and r&b I kind of only really got into when I started DJing for my high school about 7 or 8 years ago. But now I like it a lot. I think of r&b and those rare r&b/rap groups as Pop groups because lets face it, in america this type of music IS pop.
As for dance music, I've always been a fiend as far as I can remember. Maybe it started with the group Aqua, but later I started like house and trance and all that good stuff. I'm more of a fan of the radio side of dance, like radio edits and vocal dance.
I like all kinds of music though. I used to be really into rock back in like 2000-2002 when rock was ACE. Lately I have not really heard anything good.
Some of my favorte rock bands are like The Stills, Funeral For A Friend, Silverchair, A Day To Remember..
I used to really follow urban/reggae japanese music as well as jpop. The sites and blogs I used to go to that would update often and frequently about this type of music are now gone though, so for maybe about 3 years or so I have not been able to find any new music related to this genre
It is easy for me to follow kpop because there are many blogs especially allkpop.com that update LIKE CRAZY. Not to mention again the very frequent tv performances they do.
With dance music, for the past year or so I have been mainly hearing about stuff from online radio. I listen to Energy 98 like every day. Hip hop/R&B I listen to HOT108.
ugh not to ramble on and on but I guess here is a short list of some of my favorite artists:
KPOP:
Wonder Girls
2PM
F.cuz
2NE1
f(x)
BoA (also i have listened to her since Amazing Kiss her debut japanese single. she is international)
Hiphop:
The Pack
Keyshia Cole
i cant really think of anyone else right now lmfao
Dance:
Inna
Milk Inc.
Sylver
Novaspace (original singer only ! )
Japanese:
MINMI
NANJAMAN
Yui
RYO the SKYWALKER
Suzuki Ami
Amuro Namie
Hikaru Utada
BoA (she fits in everywhere lol)
Kimura Kaela
Moomin
god there is so much. I think I just need to stop lmao
