Help with trackball and hard reset.

Hey everyone so i just bought a MT3G 1.2 version with 2.2.1 installed on it, when i tried to do hard reset..my trackball wont let me click to be able to reset it..i can move it and it works fine to click when phone is actually powered up..but not on the recovery screen..i can't even click on "update from zip" and i wanna root and but diffrent rom on it..i searched google and havent found an answer really, so any help would be appreciated, thanks!
