Super Easy Root in 3 minutes...
Okay after reading for a few hours on the xda forum i have found a temporary root for the MyTouch 4G. This will help you remove some of the start up programs and applications you dont want including icons.
* does not completely remove them but if you cant see it whats the difference right?
First of all you want to install from the market on your phone ONLY:
1. VISIONary (updated with new download v14) 2. Titanium Backup: Free version works fine.
3. Shootme (for rooted devices) You will see later why...
Once installed you want to reboot the phone.
Now to the goodies:
1. Open the phones settings and go into applications. Select development and check USB debugging.
2. Exit
DO NOT TOUCH DURING THIS PROCESS
3. Once installed, open Visionary and checkON Temp Root After Reboot, and check ON System R/W After Root. Then click TempRoot Now and wait for it to finish.
Should not take long. You will see a BIG triangle. Then it will go to a black screen. Once that is done it goes back to options screen.
Okay you can touch again
4. Once complete it may or may not bring you to the app drawer with a super user icon. I had to hit the home button to see. It was there... You can see in the photos i took.

update.... I rebooted today while at work and all the apps came back (working) and the root was gone. I just redid what i posted.
Does not ruin your phone or brick if you dont remove any app that is tied to the phone functionality. Maybe soon ill make a video of my own from start to show you all.
yeah this is a easy root.. i havent deleted any apps yet but i did restart the phone just to see if id lose root and the superuser icon remains on the phone but you do lose superuser access when opening a app that requires root.. just hit the visionary app again and it will root it.. took me about 10 secs at most and back in buisness. installed setcpu and cranked it up to 1024mhz.. nice!

Yes the exact same issue. The biggest difference is i actually feel confident about this type of rooting. On my MT3G i was scared like a little boy that just watched a scary movie for the first time. I have lots of posts in the MT3G section about that. THIS is EASY!
one thing to note on this if you force remove a app by long pressin ea app it will pop up a box allowing you to force remove at the bottom, this will actually fully delete the app from the phone but you will not be able to recieve any OTA updates once you do this.. supposedly if you just freeze the app you will still recieve any of the OTA updates from tmob.. IMO if you just run launcher pro as your default launcher you shouldnt really need to delete or freeze any apps.. mine still has all the stock apps and it runs pretty fast with launcher pro without any issues..

I did not know about force removing. I just hit it and did uninstall.
It does not completely remove the app. Once you reboot the aps are back. Let me check for sure. BRB
Shuting off phone and turning back on... UP and running. CRAP that was fast. Okay i was still root... Rebooting again this time with reboot option...This time looked different. ...
Okay up and going... Yea much different start up. YEP root gone including all my apps to sd card. CRAP i need to marketplace that app i had to move everything over.
Started up the Demo for asphalt.. Working perfectly.
Nope no need to hunt things down in the market they were in different spots. LOL.. I removed so many icons it looks all different now.
SO i can still receive updates from Tmobile and I dont loose any hard apps since they are locked into the actual boot sequence of the phone.
I love this type of root. So simple yet so easy to unroot yourself when you feel froggy.
Sorry super did not want to burst your bubble especially since you got a super phone and all. LOL
....off to root... 1 minute and DONE! now to "uninstall/hide" the start up crap apps. OOO the cool part is all the apps i constantly remove are all at the top and saves me time hunting them down. YEA love this root.

Reason: update
im not 100% on this but i believe to freeze and force remove you need the paid version of titanium.. sorry didnt say that in the previous post.. uninstall doesnt remove them i believe..force remove is what removes them but again i believe you need the paid version to make that actually stick??

Word on the street is correct. Honestly ill be sticking with this type of root probably for a long time. I personally love the fact that its one button root and your not messing up the phone itself. I had lots of issues with my MT3G v1.0 and dont need to be doing all that over again with the MT4G.
Edit: Just read up on the perma root process and it is NOT designed for the MT4G. Also looks like a pain in the rear if you dont know what your doing and even if you do. One mistype and your screwed.
Once again ill be sticking with this type of temp root knowing im not screwing up my phone. :P

Yeah temp root is really easy and ive been running it 4-5
days now without a issue so ill stick with this until they make a fairly easy one click type root that can be downloaded from the market .. the one just released still requires a little bit of knowledge of the phone and can be a little tricky if your not sure what your doing.

Well of course with time there will be better root processes but this is perfectly fine for me.
I'm able to change the CPU clock so I know I'm rooted. However I can't uninstall some apps. I go into settings and apps but the uninstall button is not highlighted.

You will need to use the titanium backup for this. Once installed and ready just tap the one you want to remove and click uninstall. I used the free version so the hard copy is still in the boot loader and does not ruin the phone.
I'm not sure if I follow. I have titanium back up installed and I ran it. It said all was fine. So not sure why the unistall button is not highlighted. Just to make sure I should be going into settings-app-and then select the app I Want to uninstall? Right? The only apps that are hightlighted for uninstall are the ones I installed.

Sorry. Open up Titanium backup. There should be an overview section filled with mumbo jumbo.
Then hit the backup/restore tab. This is where you uninstall.
So lets select the rockband app . You want to tap that app section and then do the uninstall option. There should be a line that crosses it out. Go through and remove the ones you dont want. I did the obvious ones. It should reload your home launcher and BAM look for the app. Its gone.
Its still there just no longer running and no more icons.

I don't see anything here to uninstall. If I missed something well, thats my lack of tech skills.
Your in the correct spot. Now tap one. A window should pop up and ask you to either, backup, freeze, uninstall, run app, wipe data. Choose uninstall. The list is long so be careful.
One I press one of those in the list. I get backup, freeze, un-install,, restore and delete. I don't see run app, wipe data. Freeze and uninstall are not highlighted. I can only choose from the other 3.
I think there is a permanent root instruction over at XDA but I am not an expert so did not do it.
dasudevil: What theme or how you did so all programs listed so nice as pictures shown?
So what are the *official* list of apps that can be safely removed without screwing up the phone? My phone is permarooted and I have a ClockworkMod backup in case something goes wrong, just want to make sure. Thanks.

Sorry for the delay. Are you using the paid version or the free? Im restarting my phone to see if it has anything to do with the root its self. WOW up and running already... Its soo pretty. Okay you have to be rooted to even get into the titanium backup. So we are good there...
When you are in the app on the home page what do you see? Welcome to titanium backup free version yadda yadda yadda.
Under the backup/restore tab in the grey bar right under the little tabs you have an option to sort them. You should see a massive lists. Something like this...
Does yours look similar to mine (granted we may have some apps that are not the same) Do you have lots of apps that you can mess with tap or highlight without long press?
Do you see this when you press one?
If not use the shoot me app, open up where im at then shake phone. Then select an app and shake phone again. Then post pictures.

Question: Do you have to re-do the temp root when you have fastboot on? Or do you only have to do it when you truly restart your phone?
Haven't received my phone yet, this is the method of rooting i will be doing until an easier perm-root is achieved, I've been reading a lot over at xda and it sounds like the perm-root isn't a for sure thing for everyone, btw thanks for this

Yes however it really only takes a few minutes. If you dont want to remove anything its like what 1 minute tops. After a few removals titanium lays it out for you with the most removed up top. Makes things real easy. Perma root... Not my cup of tea. Ill stick with the temp root.
I downloaded Visionary from the site you linked to but when I click on it to open .... I don't know how to get it to my phone!
I've tried to follow the directions for screenshots without root also and my driver won't load. And nothing looks the same way as the instructions. So frustrating.

OMG... Use the marketplace on your phone and get the apps. Much easier...
This is much longer..
If you dont want to do that plug in your usb cord to the computer and phone. A Window should pop up asking what you want to do next. Select open folder to view files. Now go to your place where you downloaded the application. Drag that into the phone. Now go download from your phone ONLY astro file manager. Open that. Then look for the file you dragged over. Visionary. Then open that. Your phone needs to be able to accept unknown sources. Install. Then open it let it run.
Excellent set of instructions and thanks for following up on everyone's questions. Good to see this.
I downloaded the apps and got them installed no problem. Uninstalled the apps you mentioned above.
I also found that upon first opening Titaninum only 5 items were displayed. Tried rebooting several times with no luck. Titanium had prompted me to click on the "Problems?" button when starting up. So finally I did so and got prompted to download a "known good version of BusyBox" if there were any issues. Accepted this. Got the new BusyBox file. Rebooted and Viola!! All apps now appear.
Has anyone compiled a list of apps that are known as okay to uninstall? Sure would like to get all of the crapware off this thing.
Thanks again.

Start on step 1.
Unfortunately Visionary isn't in the Marketplace anymore. I'll try the other again - when I plug in my phone it just wants to download pictures.

OMG.. i did not know sorry...
another way you can install the app...
Install from the market APKatcher...
From computer...
Email yourself the file.
Back to the phone.
Open up the email with the attachment. Click install button then it should look like another app being installed. Finish with the install. Should work i just tested it as i was typing so i did not miss a step.
I downloaded the file from Visionary's web site, got it properly unzipped, onto the phone and used Linda file manager to run the apk file, but I do not have Visionary installed. It did install the Superuser icon, but not the Visionary icon with the yellow triangle. Any thoughts folks?? I double checked that everything is installed on the micro SD card by pulling it out of the phone and sticking it into a card reader. The files are there. I've restarted the phone a couple of times, even pulled the battery. Obviously, I have the MT4G through TMo and I have the latest OTA update prior to attempting this temproot.
Under applications do you see Visionary installed? If so uninstall it and try re-installing it. If its not there try reinstalling it again.
This is really bizarre. I've re-installed numerous times, tried rebooting, even pulled the battery a couple of times. The superuser icon is there, but not Visionary. When I go into "Manage Applications" and click on "All" at the top, Visionary is NOT present. To be certain that the zip file was not corrupt, I downloaded the zip file again. I know I do not have root access because I cannot run any apps that call for root access.
It's too bad that I missed getting this through the "Market" by one day, as I just came over to Android from Blackberry.
the funny part is you have the superuser icon and have not rooted. Should not have it unless you rooted. Thats one im trying to figure out still.
Success!!! The .apk file you sent me did the trick. I have to assume that the .zip file from the author's web site is corrupt or my jzip program was screwing things up. It will be interesting to see if anyone else has problems with the direct download of Visionary. If not, it is something with my JZip program.
I have successfully run ShootMe and Titanium Backup, so my temproot is successful and I sincerely want to thank you for your kind assistance. I knew I was on the right course and it was simply a matter of files being screwed up or something. Your copy of the file worked like a champ the first time.
thanks dasudevil, evrything worked well.
quick question, downloaded setcpu and maxed it out like you have it in your screen shot, any other settings i should use or have it on to help/improve

actually the screen shot in the setcpu is Super Galaxy's. Im sure he will pop in here and check it out. Then again once you root its almost impossible to forget.
i have a question, you guys said if you delete the rockband app it will come back after you reboot, but when i press it to remove it a popup (in titanium) comes up and says it removes it andit is irreversable?? im a little confused.. also i am a newbie to the android platform, i am curious, when you start your phone in the boot screen, there is an option there to reformat phone to original state, will this always be there, so even if you screw up your rooted phone, and uninstall things, can you always go to this option and get the original state back, unrooted??? thanks..
hi. i am having the same problem as everyone, trying to remove pre installed demos. you 3 minute root directions look great but the visionary link is no longer active & i cant find it in the marketplace. can you please help. thanks
