Default Auto add widgets?

In the Play app settings there is an option to auto add widgets of downloaded apps to your home screen. I turned it on and it only adds icons / shortcuts and not widgets.

To me a widget is a item that updates you with info and not an icon. Is this a typo in the description of the setting or do I have something else going on?

It's a computer programming term. The defining characteristic of a widget is to provide a single interaction point for the direct manipulation of a given kind of data, so technically an app icon is a widget.
