I was lucky to snatch up a bumper when it became available the second time. Figure I'll use that when I'm working or out at the bars. But keep it naked at home and in a padded room.

IMO LG should have ditched the cheesy chrome, which is going to get scratched up whether its in a TPU case or not, and opted for something a little tougher and less scratch resistant. Maybe brushed aluminum, or even something soft touch.

My preference would have been brushed aluminum or something similar... Stands the test of time, just look at any iPhone 4 or 4S.

I'm really digging the all black look of the HTC one X+...looks like it can definitely be rocked without a case with little to worry about as far as scratches and nicks go.

I feel like it's a lose-lose for these companies.

Droid's feature Kevlar, considered ugly by some
iPhone 4/4S debut's with a glass back and is "fragile"
S3 debut's with plastic and is slammed for being cheap
iPhone 5 debut's with alumnium and is scratched too easily
Nexus debut's with glass.. (see iPhone 4/4S)

There are so many variables... cheap and efficient vs. premium and fragile all while trying to differentiate from the plethora of cell phones. Then there's the case vs. no case crowd.

What's really crazy is how people who swear by always using a case also partake in this conversation of what the back is made of, knowing that their cellphone's nudity will never see the light of day.

I'm a fan of Samsung...some will disagree on the materials they use. But you can definitely put the Blue GS3 in your pocket and not worry about scratches, same for the Galaxy Nexus, for the exception of the glass which didn't have Gorilla Glass and scratched if you breathed on it, so a screen protector was needed. If careful an iPhone 4 and 4S was a great in pocket device that could stand the test of time without a case as well.

But I feel that Motorola and HTC have really dialed in on the materials a phone should be made of.

I'm fine with the double glass on the nexus 4, and the soft touch is a pleasure to hold. My only gripe is the chrome, to me its played out, and just wont stand the test of time as far as scratches go.

Agreed on Samsung. The plastic is great for drops, cheap to replace and doesn't look "bad" at all.

the problem with the bigger phones is that when you add a case to protect it, it becomes less manageable one-handed. The 4S was fine to have in a case because of the small form-factor.

I've always been a fan of perforated leather in a car, I wonder how a small strip of that would look on the sides of the phone vs chrome.

I ended up getting a leather pouch, I prefer the phone naked while I am using it, and the pouch will keep it safe when I am storing it. Best of both worlds in my opinion! Also: I decided to put an XO skin on the backside after getting many microscratches on it.

Default Naked-R-Us..

Well coming off a GS2 with a Casemate on it..last few months took the Casemate off and phone felt really nice (I work at the Airport and phone works great with no scratches/drops)..

SOooo I have my N4 and I am going naked with it. I think a case takes away from the phone (of course if your prone to dropping things then yes a case is a must..but not me).

Slides in my pocket really nice (that glass back is sweet) and I can get it out of my pocket fairly quick instead of wrestling with it (like I did with my GS2 with case) since I do need to look at time and other info on my phone at work fairly quick.

Just cant do cases. I try so hard to take care of every device I have...iPods, laptops, phones etc because I dont want to wrap anything in cases. I just feel like it takes away from the product design. Theres probably few cases that I would consider if something was to persuade me. My ipad is the only thing I put a case on to prevent some scratching and to go with the cover. Took me a decade to find the right one!

Ok. Well this lasted about a week! The the bumper is left on the side gathering dust ever since....

The phone is just much better without a bumper.

The bumper is a great edition to this phone but it hates headphones so if i wanna use it for music in my car I have to take it off and i practically have to force myself to put it back on it just feels so goood especially with no screen protectors but its seems to be made of some frictionless materials and likes to made mad dashes for the floor(would be great as a leveler) and aint nobody got time for dat. I have dropped it with no protection out of my car and it slid like 5 feet into the gutter on the front but had no scratches on the screen

I have no protectiong of anything on my last 3 phones. I just grip it firm. I put inside my cloth pouch and its where I lay it down on table also.

Just dont grab two things when you have your phone in hand.

I wish I could but it's not worth the risk. Does anyone know if there are clear cases that offer protection? I'd love to be able to show it off but I can't afford to replace it if something happened.

I'm not a big fan of cases, i don't like the framing around the screen. I used to run my Nexus naked, but that's mostly because it took forever for my DBrand skin to come in the mail. So that's what I'm running right now, just a vinyl skin on the back, no case or bumper.

The last "case" I had for a cell phone was a leather belt holster for an old Nokia. Been naked ever since. My Nexus One saw two years of pretty heavy use and was in pristine condition when I sold it. I have two Captivates and an SGS2 that I have hanging around that have seen heavy service. One of the captivates was my son's phone through college. And while there is a scuff or two on the case, there are no dent's or scratches ... and this was from 3 years in a frat house with two drops in the toilet. Still works like a champ.

I was one of the lucky ones to actually get an order placed on launch day and have my Nexus 4 ship in a reasonable amount of time. So I've been naked for 4 months without incident (KNOCK ON FRIGGIN' WOOD) and have no intention of ever using a case.

Currently using a GENx hybrid bumper and waiting for the dbrand titanium back cover. I was gonna go naked (and I'm probably very alone in this opinion and will get flamed to hell for saying this), but I really don't like the shiny, sparkly back cover so the sooner it's covered, the better.....

I don't have a problem with the looks of the back, but there are two things I'm not particularly fond of. One, it's very slippery. It has twice slid off my desk (carpeted office, luckily). And two, if you lay it face up on a smooth surface the speaker is effectively muted. Not sure if that's a design flaw or a feature, but I've missed a few calls and messages because I didn't hear the tones.

While a case would resolve those issues, I still don't want one. Call me a curmudgeon.

Putting it in a case usually can get scarfing.

Nobody like my idea of putting it inside a cloth pouch and using it has a back to lay the phone down on it?

The original Nexus 1 came with a pouch. I never used it. Pulling in and out of a sleeve seemed incredibly inconvenient.

My first two iPhones were completely naked the Original and 3G. Original iPhone went with me around world for 6 month.. It did survived freezing temperatures - 49 F, rains that didn't stop for days and heat that will make you feel like you're in hell . And i was able to sell in on Craigslist for a decent amount of money and put them towards 3G which sadly wasn't that tough.. But apple was pretty good to me so they replaced it after almost 14 month of usage. Its still works and sitting with all other phones that ive used.. Too bad i didn't saved the original iPhone.

Going naked means you're definitely going to put marks on it anyway and it's not gonna look fresh after some time.
