Default Shattered Rear Nexus 4 Glass

Hi there

Ive had my Nexus 4 for 9 days and today it accidentally fell from a height of about 1 foot onto a hard surface... the rear was shattered in about 3 places and the bits of glass are only held in place by the original plastic cover that was on the phone from the start that i left on. (the front of the phone is fine and still works OK, including the camera)

Unfortunately I did not have a case/cover etc on it yet as waiting for one from eBay which may have saved it.

What I want to know is (cant find this specific info on internet anywhere) is there anyway i can get this replaced under warranty from Google if I come up with some better story of how it broke?

I read about someone just setting it down onto a cold stone surface in his home and it just shattered from the temperature difference or something like that.

I'm not sure if its covered under my house contents insurance yet but looking into it now - in the meantime i will get a black gel cover to cover up the shattered back glass.

Thanks for reading
David

I am not really sure if there's a story good enough for them to cover warranty on a broken glass, but it is worth the try. You should also pray there's no one from google registered in this forum

I've read a few stories like this about the iPhone 4. They have taken the phone to an Apple Store and some have gotten a replacement for free, others for $29.

What to Do When You Crack Your iPhone 4's Back | Apartment Therapy

Maybe you should call google and tell them the truth to know if you can get any help, but don't give your personal information. Say you are someone else who also bought a Nexus (maybe a friend you know who got it). This is in case they won't help you, you can call later and tell "a good story" using your real name.

What you are asking is how to commit fraud.

My advice, be honest... maybe they'll work with you. There was risk involved with buying the device and using it (and using it without a case). Regardless, when people DO have a legit issue we all hope that Google/LG does the right thing. Don't ruin it by lying about it now.

rang lg via google and sending it back to them for a repair quote, told them it was dropped by accident so google couldnt do anything themselves for me.

its a 26 pounds or so fee to get it inspected then up to me if i want to pay the cost to get it fixed or not.

this is a nice phone but glass on the back is idiotic imo.

The phone looks beautiful and such, but i would have to agree, I know so many complained about the iPhone 4 full glass phone.

Sorry about your luck, hopefully it doesn't cost too much

Default Smashed!

Has anyone had an official quote for a repair from LG? I dont fancy paying 29 for a quote if the repair is going to be more than 80

Default Picture of smashed back

I've had my nexus 4 for 3 days, when it fell out of my pocket as I got out of a car and hit the tarmac, where this was the result.

53 doesn't sound too bad.

Here is what LG said to me when I contacted them:

I cannot advise of a cost due to the engineers who will need to diagnose the problem and decide what needs to be fixed when it is sent in. After the inspection you will receive a quote, you can then either choose to accept and pay the quote and have the phone repaired and returned to you, or you can choose to reject the quote and have the phone returned to you unrepaired for the inspection fee of 」23.50. There is also a third option to reject the quote and have the phone recycled free of charge.

This is my biggest fear. Will simply a bumper absorb enough shock from a drop to prevent this? Or do I want an all-around TPU?

I'm using a bumper right now, I'm truly scared that this will happen to me. I baby all of my tech even the cheap stuff. But I do know the risks of owning a fragile phone like this. I just hope this does not happen to me. Especially not knowing how much a replacement would cost me.

If you just pick the glass off the back, what is the material under the glass like. Is it possible to just use the phone with no glass back at all, if it looks half decent that might be an option.

Not sure that using any phone without a back is ever a good idea. Quite apart from all the crud (and moisture) that's going to get in, bits of the internals are likely to get caught on things and ripped out.

I'd bite the bullet and stump up the 53.

I'm using the official bumper and have dropped my phone twice (on the same day), from 2 foot onto laminate and 5 foot onto lino covered concrete.
Both times the phone hit corner first then back, however the bumper took the hit and both phone and bumper remain unmarked.

I also have a more "rugged" case for use if I'm out drinking / living it up, but I'm very happy with the compromise between protection and looks the bumper offers.

Just bought a cover and it looks good a 'hybrid flex shield gel skin case' from eBay. I got the grey one. 3.50 about $5.25. It fits well you can see the nexus word through the case.

Hi, I have PM'd you as I stay in Scotland and have broken the glass on the back due to the stupid frictionless attributes it offers.

I had my phone a total of 3 hours before I left it where it was safe only to watch it slide of and land on my laminate flooring when I was no where near it

Any help would be great. I would rather take it to somewhere than play the lottery of sending it to LG waiting on a price for a fix.

Cheers

Trust me, it's not pretty. There isn't a full plastic back behind the glass, and the design is just on a thin film that will come off with the glass, leaving the inductive charging coil exposed.

This is exactly what HTC in Texas would tell you when you called about repairing the Nexus One. What it meant for HTC, and I suspect it means here, is that if they find your bootloader unlocked they will insist you need a new mother board and you will have to agree to do that in order to have any other repair done (I was asking about repairing my power button after the warranty expired --paying out of my own pocket-- and they still insisted on this). I assume it also means if they find water damage or anything else, they will insist on repairing it, at your expense, whether the phone is working or not.

Again, this is HTC not LG, but the above wording from LG is almost word for word the script they had at HTC.

I would doubt it worth making such a low value claim on house insurance consider you excess payment and loss of no claims. Buy a case and hide the damage chances are you will buy the next latest phone before the years out chuck the N4 in drawer and forget the crappy glass back

You can always get a new battery cover from here for $60.

New LG Google Nexus 4 E960 T Mobile Battery Door Cover | eBay

This is not directed towards anyone!!!

I know this will sound like I'm an ass and I understand that ish happens but phones are not meant to be dropped. Complaining about the design has nothing to do with how a customer mistreats their phone. The design is amazing and of course it looks fantastic. Luckily there are ways to try and prevent such damages should an ACCIDENT occur. Cases and screen protectors offer a lot of protection. Using a phone without either one is purely on the customer/user if anything should happen so if you make that choice then it's no ones fault but the users. Even if something should break and you took every precaution and you accidentally dropped it, at least you took the effort to try and protect your phone. Still doesn't give anyone the right to complain about the company and the design of the phone. Yes, remember this is a PHONE. Not shatter resistant or bullet proof glass. Until a phone becomes indestructible and unbreakable, no one has the right to complain about the design. We all knew the damn back was glass before we bought it? What more could we expect? Glass breaks if you drop it. Don't drop it.

Once again not directed towards anyone. I'm just tired of seeing that "LG was dumb" "What were they thinking"? If that's the case then what does that say for the customer that BOUGHT this dumb device by this dumb company? :/

For that price may as well just send the phone in for repair.

I'm knocking on a huge piece of wood right now but I've never dropped or broken a phone. I'd like to think that I haven't because I am insanely aware at all times what I'm doing with my phone while it's in my hands, in my case, on the desk, charger, etc... When I'm walking I'm making sure I know that no one is going to bump into me. I watch when I walk past doors to make sure no one opens it up one me and hits my hand. I'm ALWAYS aware because of this and I'd like to think it's aided me throughout my years as a cell phone user.

I also take no chances in that I always wrap my phones in screen protectors and use TPU cases or bumpers. Not those hard ass Otter Box cases. Having a rock hard case is like not having one at all IMO.

Good luck to you and stay aware!!!!

Not sure how much the repair is as I've never priced it.

Figured I would share for those that might need help or another option. :/

i'm extremely careful with my gadgets, but I always seem to drop a phone at least once. I have a case on my phone 100% of the time so I never get any breakage, but hearing all the stories about this phone really scares me. I really love this phone tho....
