Default Camera focus hunts

I find that when I try to take close up (about a metre so not macro) photographs the focus hunts. As I watch the screen I can see the image going in and out of focus about every 2 seconds. When I take a photo it's a toss up whether it's in focus or not. This doesn't seem to be a problem taking long shots where the focus is at infinity, and it's not a problem when using flash.

I'm using 4.2.1, and after some Googling I found this Android issue report, which seems like the problem I have. Has anyone else noticed the problem and found a way round it.
