Advice For Keeping Nexus 4 Below 200MB Per Month

So I'm using the Nexus 4 as my actual phone for calls and texts and BSing on wifi but I want to move it to the 200MB plan and use the money I save for my Note 2 on the $30 a month T-Mobile prepaid plan. I would keep mobile data off but I'd like to get Google Voice texts without having to have them forwarded to my regular number. What advice can you guys give so that my phone can have mobile data on without it using data on odds and ends while I'm out and about?

I was on a 150MB plan for 2 years. Use the data monitoring or an app like 3g watchdog to set a warning and then disable data before you go over. The phone still works for email sync, gps nav, random internet searches, etc. It's about 6MB/day, so don't do any data intensive stuff without wifi

I'm on wifi most of the time, so it's not a big deal. I just don't want it using data while I'm driving down the road or something.

The secret to using less data is the same as the secret to losing weight: eat less

Turn off auto sync, particularly on things like e-mail, twitter, FB, news and weather widgets etc.

Then you want to keep an eye on what is using data as sometimes it can be things you don't expect. You used to need apps for this, but now you can get all the information you need from the settings.

My last phone (original Desire) used masses of data which turned out to be a very dodgy e-mail app. I wound up drastically reducing the frequency it sync'd. Made a big difference.

The other one was maps (probably a bug on 2.2): sometimes after using the GPS it kept pulling down data all day. Back then I used a task killer to solve this.

Well I went to change my data plan for the Nexus and it's now 300MB for $20 or 3GB for $30. So ef that, I'm sticking with 3GB. Sorry for wasting you nice folks' time!

I pay $30 also but I choose the 5GB plan. I always use VOIP app.
