Default [APK] Motorola's "Awesome" Camera

Came across this the other day and I've been using this camera in place of the stock 4.2.2 camera on my Nexus and I must say that this camera should have been the STOCK camera.

Mainly in part due to the ease of use and there's no "auto focus" bug.

Check it out. Info taken from source. Install Motorola’s Awesome Camera App On Your Android Device [How-To] | Cult of Android

"With Android 4.2, Google completely revamped the camera experience with a brand new interface and features like Photosphere. While the new UI may seem like a welcome change, it is poorly laid out which can make selecting the intended option cumbersome. The lack of some downright basic options like scenes and timer mode does not help the matter, either. Worse, on the Nexus devices, the camera app has an auto-focus bug that can often lead to blurry photos. While Motorola phones are not particularly known for their camera performance, the camera application on their handsets is perfect for most, with just the right amount of settings. Here is how you can get the Motorola camera app on your Android 4.0+ handset.
Read more at Install Motorola’s Awesome Camera App On Your Android Device [How-To] | Cult of Android

The installation process is pretty simple, and just requires you to download and install this APK file on your handset. Keep in mind that you need to make sure that you have enabled the option to install apps from Unknown Sources from Settings -> Security.

Unlike the stock camera app on the Nexus 4 and other Nexus devices, the Motorola camera app features a timer mode, the ability to assign a custom action to a volume key, some basic filters, and the option to select a pre-defined scene. There are quite a few camera apps available from third party developers on the Play Store, but they all have either tons of advanced features that confuse the user, or have wannabe Instagram-like filters that not everyone wants.

"The APK has been tested on a Nexus 4 running Android 4.2.2 and a Galaxy S3 running Android 4.1.2, and has worked flawlessly on both the devices. If you find after installing that your flash does not trigger while clicking pictures, just restart your device and this should fix it."

Figured I would share with you guys and let you check it out. Some of you may have already seen this and already been using it. For the others though, enjoy.

Looks good, downloaded and seems to give slightly better results than stock.

Cheers

I rarely use Photosphere, so it's not a huge issue if the moto camera doesn't have it. It's easy enough to use the stock camera app if needed anyway.

How does video quality compare or is it much the same?

Gonna try out the video quality today at some point. Been meaning to make a little guitar video so I'll do a side by side and record it with each.

Okay here is a video comparison between the 4.2 camera and the Motorola camera. Video starts off with the Stock 4.2.2 camera and transitions back and forth from the Motorola camera. Clip ends with the stock 4.2.2 camera.

Was very surprised at the difference. I personally think the 4.2.2 camera is MUCH better.

Thanks! I'm giving this a try and with the 2 minutes that I've had it I already love the fact that I can use the volume button as a dedicated shutter button! Although getting used to only being able to shoot with the phone rotated to the left is annoying, if you rotate the phone to the right, pictures come out upside-down. Just a heads up.

Edit: also, be careful when using some of the live filters, they have caused crashes on both the camera app and my launcher as well. Also, I was mistaken about pics being upside-down, they appear that way in the little window in the top left, but they are right side up in the Gallery.

Sadly this does not fix the autofocus bug, or at least it doesn't on my N4.

I think the continual focussing is because the camera is very sensitive to small movements. I don't have very steady hands and I find that if I rest the phone on something solid it will focus just fine, but if I try to hold it without some form of rest I get the continual focussing. Perhaps I need to cut out the excessive drinking :-)

From what I understand, the auto focus bug with the stock camera is that during some shots the camera wouldn't focus at all. IDK, I've never noticed this problem.

After doing the video comparison I have since stopped using the motorola camera.

I don't currently have the time being that I'm at work, but does someone wanna do an actual camera comparison and see if the pictures are any better or worse.

Say a set of pics with naturual light, flash in medium light, medium light natural light, low light with flash, low light with naturual light. That's only 8 pics. If anyone has time that would be great. Don't know why I didn't do it when I made the video :/

I did a quick comparison (with the phone resting on a hard surface to avoid the shake/autofocus problem) and there seemed to me to be little difference. I thought the colours seemed a bit more saturated in the stock app, though I have to say even in the stock app the colours seem a bit undersaturated compared to my Olympus camera.

For some reason the aspect ratio was different with the Motorola camera. Portrait pictures were narrower i.e. the Motorola camera seems to trim some pixels off the sides (or off the top and bottom in landscape), though there may be a setting I've missed to change the image size.

I've been using the app more for Videos than pics, and the videos seem to come out a little better than the stock camera app, seems to be ok on autofocus as well when taking videos, not great but works when it wants. Check out my videos on my youtube channel currently working on the Kyocera Hyrdo review, and I use my Nexus 4 to take all my videos

After actually seeing a comparison of the 2 cameras I realized that the Moto video portion is VERY different from that of the stock camera. I prefer the stock but I guess I could see where someone would like the darker look of the moto camera.
