Default IR Blaster / TV Remote?

I know Google markets the Nexus 7 (or at least the old one) as for use with Google TV/Google Fiber. Is this still the case with the new Nexus 7 that is out?

In addition, is it only for use with Google TV/Fiber or can I use it as a universal remote? This is a huge selling point for me. I've been looking at the Xperia S Tablet and the one thing I like about it is the IR Blaster.

Well, I'm working on this project:

The AardRemote Project

Shouldn't take more than 50 years to get it finished at the rate I'm going on the android side of things (but at least the arduino side is working great).
