Default Media Server..?

Just wondering what media server people would recommend, preferably free.. but I'm willing to pay if it's any good.
I've already got the VLC direct but can't figure out how to play my movies/mp3's on my N7 (but I can control playback on my PC via my N7..?)

Thanks.

I'm sure there's a Media server option in ES File Explorer, but I've never used it (the media bit that is).

The app is free though so no harm in giving it a go.

I've got this app and has a lot of nice features. Everything plays on my Panasonic plasma or N7. Streams from app or from home media.

Plex works well for remotely viewing videos/music from your pc to your phone/tablet when you are otg.
I like it because it supports linux! but the app for andriod isn't free.
Here is the play store link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android&feature=nav_result# ?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5wbGV4YXBwLmFuZHJvaWQiXQ. .

UPnPlay is good free DLNA Android client in conjunction with MXPlayer (for Video). They should work with any DLNA compliant server (e.g. Playon, Synology, Plex etc.).

ES File Explorer does have a LAN option and will play your shared media files (or you can use other media players on your device). You have to share the files from your PC but no media server software is needed on the pc (other than Windows 7 for me).

Pixil-DMS creates a media server on your nexus7, works with streaming to a ps3.
