I wasn't implying there are different ones that you should post, just that I wish there were some more sleek options. I've already expressed my desire for something that doesn't protect the back at all - I want a bracket that snaps around the edge of the tablet, with a "smart cover-esque" flap that goes over the front. That's all. Thin, sleek, protects the glass and makes it easier to carry.
Barring that, I'd accept a very thin, hard back cover. Not looking for drop protection here, just scuff resistance.
Gotcha!
I recently ordered a case for my Toshiba Excite 10 that QUADRUPLES the thickness and probably the weight too.
It didn't really hit me until I started carrying the thing around!
It's a bummer too, because it's otherwise a great case, so I'm understanding you better now.
Luckily, there are threads like this one to help me stay in touch.
Looks like a little book, but there a ton of colors. Pricing isn't too bad for something you get to pick your colors with, along with other choices as well.
I bought a Moko case for my new Nexus 7 this weekend from BSCstore on Amazon. I was looking for an inexpensive case that rotates and takes advantage of the late-revealed sleep/ wake function. I didn't see many cases that fit the bill for under $10, so I bought this Moko case on Amazon for $7 shipped (w/ Prime) as a temporary case. Link. I like that it has a strap but it's otherwise not the most attractive case and I certainly don't need all those pockets. But I figured I would use it until more inexpensive cases that support the sleep/ wake function become available.
However, I got an email from the seller today that they will be sending me a second case free. The second case will support the sleep/ wake function of the N7. Maybe I won't buy a second case after all! The first case arrives tomorrow. I'll see how I like it.
There are a number of Moko cases for the N7, but only a couple sold by BSCstore. I don't know if other sellers are offering to ship replacement Moko cases, but you might inquire directly.
Here's the email:
Dear buyer:
Thank you for your recent purchase of "MoKo case for Nexus 7 tablet"
from BSCstore via Amazon. And we are writing to let you know that we
will be providing a free replacement case that fully supports the
"automatic wake/sleep" function on your new Nexus 7 tablet. This is an
unannounced feature that we were not able to include in our first
batch of cases that were already shipped to you. But we will stand
behind our products and provide a fully compatible replacement within
5-7 days. You don't have to ship the current unit back and can use it
as the lay-over unit before you receive the updated version. We will
be sending you another email with details on how to obtain the
replacement units when they are ready.
Again,we want o thank you for your business. We understand you have
many choices and appreciate your choosing MoKo case to protect you new
Nexus 7.Please feel free to let us know if there is anything else we
need to do to make this purchase a right one for you.
Best Regards,
Jim Pollak
BSCstore on Amazon
The case I bought is now $9 shipped (w/ Prime). Presumably the price increased to compensate for all the replacement cases they plan to send out (and maybe a little bit due to the cost increase for adding magnets to the case).
I really like the looks of this case for the Kindle Fire, but due to the snapping mechanism, I am doubtful that my future Nexus 7 will fit perfectly with it.
I have a Moko for my Nook Color and liked it a lot. I was thinking about getting this Moko but I don't know what I would do with 3 cases now.
Maybe I can work out a deal with them for some credit.
Someone else had the same question I did about getting credit and got this email from them.

Actually we do plan to let you choose any style you prefer from our
whole selection of Nexus 7 cases with no additional charge. We will
email you with details on how to obtain the slim-fit case when it is
ready. We will be also be providing other choices as well.
Wow, that really is a great little trick. Amazing customer service, yes, but also genius marketing. I'm now looking at their cases, and I didn't even want a full case!
About the waterproof sleeve that I bought, I'm actually wondering if I'll ever use it. What if it goes wrong?
Looks like a little book, but there a ton of colors. Pricing isn't too bad for something you get to pick your colors with, along with other choices as well.
I keep coming back to this company's website. Just a beautiful case - we'll see if I can resist ordering one once my Nexus is here today
Thanks for all the suggestions guys, keep em coming!
Love that Treegloo one, a little pricey but oh so sexy.
This is one device I'm definitely getting a case for as the wife aka "butterfingers" will be using it too. After dropping and trashing the screen on my 10.1 and not having insurance on this puppy, I'll be finding one for sure.

The thing that bothers me about the treegloo.com cases is that I don't see any joinery on the joints. It looks like each joint is just flat wood faces glued at an angle. That's begging to fall apart over time.
I'm tempted to use a couple of the quilt patches I made years ago to make my own quilted sleeve to carry it around in to avoid scratches.

Actually, their website (and a couple of the reviews) states specifically that they use carpentry joining on the joints.

Those treegloo one's look really really nice.
If I hadn't already ordered my case, I definitely would have put some thought into buying one.
If my case turns out to be crap though... I'll return to looking at these again
With the same porous plastic material, we are concerned that the black
back on the retail version could also be susceptible to dye to some
extend. It may be embarrassing but we have to admit that we did not
have this issue in mind when our fist batch of Nexus cases was made.
Although the case has NOT left any mark on neither of the white or
black Nexus 7 we have after a short period of normal use, we would
rather be overcautious and have more intensive tests done before we
can comfortably let you use the case, even as a temporary solution. We
definitely could not afford to have you as beta-testers on this issue
with your brand new tablets and would suggest you hold off using the
case until you get further confirmation from us or a replacement case,
hopefully within 5-7 days. You can be assured all our future shipments
will be fully compatible with Auto wake/sleep feature and free of any
staining problems guaranteed. You will get to choose any style you
prefer from our whole selection of Nexus cases as the free
replacement.
I understand most of you will get your Nexus 7 today and I am really
sorry to disappoint you with this message but please do excise caution
if you have to use something else on your Nexus. Again, I apologize
for the inconvenience and would appreciate your understanding and
patience in this process of getting the right protection for your
Neuxs. This is what we do and we will do it right for you.
Please also let us know if you have any comments or suggestions. Thanks, Jim

So the problem with using such advanced joinery has been exposed - people like me look at, don't see any evidence of if, and don't bother to look any farther :-).
I just ordered this one....never having a tablet let alone a cover can anyone point out any red flags on this case for me.... or was it a decent choice. Thinness and smart cover were critical.
I just ordered this one as well, seemed like a steal for 7.95 shipped. Will be my first tablet experience as well as case of this kind. I have a feeling it may be a little top heavy, but hey, you get what you pay for right? If this doesn't work I may just go with a plastic shell case.
I've had my Nexus 7 for a few hours now, and I'm pretty sure if I get a case it needs to be one that has a pocket or loop or something to slide my hand in to hold it. It is just a little bit tiring to hold it with outstretched fingers and thumb.
I've been playing with mine for a couple hours and it is more comfortable naked than with the case that I bought from amazon. It makes it too thick. I think I'll return it and maybe get some sort of silicone type cover.
I am seriously considering contacting a local machine shop and finding out what it would cost to have them machine a custom bezel, then hacking up a Smart Cover to fit the Nexus.
The problem is I don't think I can reasonably justify spending $100 to put together a cover for a $200 tablet

Congrats on getting your new toy shep. I've merged this into the cases thread as many options have been discussed here.
Yes, it's for the Kindle Fire, but I basically wanted a very thin, lightweight, no-BS sleeve to throw the Nexus into when it was going to go into my bag, otherwise I wanted to use the Nexus bare. It's thin, simple, and does the job nicely. Edit: The inside is a nylon fabric that isn't abrasive, but it's not microfiber or something soft on the inside.

My rooCASE just arrived (ahead of the tablet by a day or two)
I'm very happy to report that not only is it NOT super thick, but features the same removable inner sleeve design I love about my rooCASE for the Toshiba Excite 10!
I love the smell of new leather...classy.

Those of you who HATE having to use the power button to wake your devices (and that's all that works with the stock JB rom), should be buying cases with the embedded magnet that wakes your device when your cover is opened and puts it to sleep when it's closed.
FWIW, I was able to tape a thin magnet in my case to duplicate this behavior, but it's best to buy one with it already included.
(That tape won't last long, it's just for testing. )
I bought this case, the CaseCrown for Kindle Fire. Like NeoteriX, I was mostly looking for a sleeve that would protect my Nexus 7 while in transit, and am likely to take it out of the case to use it.
A few notes about the case, the Nexus 7 is just a bit taller than the Kindle Fire, so it goes slightly off of the edge of the inner piece that the elastic holds it to. This doesn't cause any real problems, the fit is just a little tight. Unfortunately, though, the elastic winds up hitting the device exactly where the Power and Volume buttons are located, so it's difficult to press them when the device is in the case. Also, the elastic slightly covers the corners of the screen. This isn't a big deal for me (especially since I intend to use the device outside of the case most of the time), but can see how it would annoy others.
The exterior material is hard and seems durable. The interior is lined with a felt-like material. The interior partition that the device is held to has velcro to hold it in place while allowing you to prop the device up as well. There is a flap with velcro that I think is supposed to be used when propping the device up, but the velcro seems to be on the wrong side, lol.
Overall, it's a good, cheap case that fits my needs. Available in a few other colors as well, though the blue version seems to have a slightly different interior.
Now, to figure out how I might add a magnet and turn it into a smart case, hehe.
I have a Google official case that's coming in soon, but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to use that as my default case. It's pretty disappointing that there's no stand.
I've been driving myself crazy researching cases for the N7 and have narrowed my options down to four. One of my rules with purchasing cases/folios are that they CAN'T cover the bezel.
Unfortunately these aren't available right now, but they all look like REALLY good cases. I haven't ordered any of these yet, but I would like to have all of them ( that's not an option ) .
If any of you are going to order one of these, please post below because I'd like some input. Or if you find other cases/ folios that are worthy of a purchase, let me know and I'll update this post.
I'm looking for one where the front cover folds back onto itself so that I can just hold it, like a tablet but bulkier. I've looked at the links and pictures here and none of them are showing that configuration.
They all seem to fold back into a stand, which I understand, but I would like something that folds back flat. Or maybe they do do that but don't have a picture of it that way.

Does anyone know where I might be able to get some magnetic tape in the UK? I've had a look on eBay and the like, but it's either expensive or there is metres of the stuff.

Specifically no. I'm in the US, but I would check out a craft store. Over here they usually sell it in relatively small quantities and its rather inexpensive $2-3.

I got the "official" case for it when I got the tablet. Frankly it sucks. It fits perfectly, the buttons work and the tablet is well protected. The screen cover is just floppy and doesn't stay in place. I wouldn't feel comfortable putting my N7 in my backpack with that case. Sure a rubber band or similar would hold it closed but that's tacky. $20 down the tubes.
I got a case like Colchiro got off of Amazon for $5 shipped and it's far better. Tough to get to the buttons but not impossible. I'm waiting for a version which has the auto-sleep/wake feature (several on Amazon and mentioned here) which I think it would be almost perfect (one that rotates to portrait as well would be the bees knees).
Has anyone tried Gelaskins before? They now do them for the Nexus, but don't know how good they are. While My case is good, I like just holding the actual thing in my hand when using it. Either that or maybe a silicone case (BLACK S LINE GRIP GEL SILICONE CASE COVER & FILM FOR GOOGLE NEXUS 7 ASUS TABLET | eBay) like I have installed on my phone.
Decided to test out the magnet screen lock thing with an old magnet from home. Bit of sticky tape and it works very well. Will do for now until I get some magnetic tape.
My rooCASE just arrived (ahead of the tablet by a day or two)

It has the auto sleep, folds back for a stand at 2 angles, and comes with a stylus.
I was thinking about the other i-BLASON one but I am rooted and my homescreen can already switch to landscape so I rarely use it as portrait anymore except to type. Which now that I think about it, could be a slight issue...
And if anyone has already bought or plans to buy a case without a magnetic strip in the right place (approx 1" in and 1.5" up from the bottom LH corner) to wake up/put your N7 to sleep I can personally recommend this eBay seller as I have bought stuff from them before. I like how he uses a 5# magnet, can't open the case stand and the dogs are barking in the background....

I used a very thin, round magnet off a fridge magnet. It's smaller than a dime.
Have to be careful of anything thicker since it could mar the screen.
Before I added the magnet, I stretched out the case by closing the cover and setting a book on it for a couple days, when it wasn't being used. It closes much better now.

I used Gelaskins for my old iPod a while back. Went on very easily and came off cleanly too (no adhesive left behind). It even came with a clear sheet for the screen.

I like that case a lot but wanted the magnet feature without my ten thumbs screwing up the case or tablet so I pre-ordered one of these:
