Well, I've been using MX Player to play movies from the OTG mounted sdcard, and it seems to work fine while I'm playing, but the problem I run into is that something must be started in the background that has something open on the sdcard, because I can't ever seem to unmount it so I can safely unplug it. I don't suppose there is an app out there anywhere than can kill things that have certain filesystems open is there?
Using my USB OTG to connect thumb drives to transfer files to and from the tablet. Import pictures from my DSLR And my wife's point and shoot. Used Chainfire's DSLR controller app (amazing BTW). Also verified mouse works through USB OTG. Very nice feature! Galaxy Nexus has it as well, so I can do all of that on it too.
Just ordered a USB OTG, main reason is to have more films with me.
I have to transfer them to the N7 in order to watch them though right? But I can do this without root?
Unless they are movies that you have downloaded via means other than the Play Store, it won't help. Play Store rentals and purchases, as far as movies go, are stored on your device within the Movies app, not as a separate file.

Does a USB OTG cable actually do anything? Other than convert from micro USB to USB? I've seen an HP micro USB memory stick which looks interesting...
I'm not absolutely positive, but I think all the circuitry is in the device, I think the cable is just an adapter to get the connectors to fit in the right spots.

OTG cable arrived today. All of my flash drives work perfectly, shame it won't play .avi files though (is there an external app that will?)
Also mounted my 500GB portable HD with stickmount. Mounted perfectly first time, it's formatted to NTFS so obviously the stock kernel does support NTFS.
I spotted a device on Amazon which claimed to have a USB port for a keyboard & a selection of slots for various sizes of memory cards. When it arrived this turned out not to be true. I'm finding it impossible to find another one, has anybody seen anything like it?

Sorry I should have been more clear. It didn't have a full size USB as advertised. That's exactly what I want (well if I was being picky it would have a short wire) many thanks.
I bought an OTG-USB adapter from Amazon for $.65, yes, that's 65 cents, with free shipping from Hong Kong. Got it yesterday, shipping took 3 weeks. I've used it with a thumb drive, sd camera card, and microsd adapter and can read/write, copy files, play content, etc. All my external memory if fat32. It would not mount my 750Gb WD Passport external drive.
I play mp4's using a flash drive, plugged into an OTG cable, and "Nexus Media Importer" app.
When the app loads, just select a file, and click "Stream" (top of the window). They'll play.
Depending on which media players are installed on the N7, you'll be offered a choice of player.
I had no problems playing a 10gb 1080p film from a 750gb HDD yesterday. Stock rom, only busy box, su and stick mount. Format was ntfs, drive was a 7200rpm 2.5 inch with no external power. It seemed to pull enough power off the otg to spin at full speed, skipping through the film went as smooth as for local files.
It did seem to drain quite a bit of power tho, but that could've just as well been the screen.

So in order to write to external storage you have to be rooted correct?
More precisely: you have to root and flash a kernel with full ntfs support. The stock kernel can't write to ntfs partitions under any circumstances.
You have to be rooted to mount your drives with apps like StickMount, but there are apps that let you read external storage without mounting and so, without need for rooting.
Edit: seems like I misread a bit, you can edit non-ntfs partitions fine with the stock kernel tho. I don't think the apps that don't require root allow edits, but don't pin me down on that.

All of this works great. Stickmount is very nice for mounting and unmounting the drives, my 8gb test movie played easily, and I even tried plugging in my 500gb USB drive to see if the tablet would deliver enough power - it's perfect.
I cannot get Stickmount to mount FAT32, eFAT, or NTFS. Only FAT/64KBsector. How did you mount that 500GB drive?
It'll just depend mostly on your external device, I've had a 750GB hdd recognized fine, same for a 2TB fat32. But a no go for a 250GB ntfs.
It's not a StickMount compatibility issue AFAIK, just the device.
Stock kernel btw.

Just came up with a new use today: Something in my new Nikon S800c android camera is keeping files downloaded via the browser open, so I can't delete them (or can only sometimes delete them somewhat at random). If I plug the camera into the OTG connector, I can delete the files from the Nexus 7 when I get tired of them cluttering up the camera :-).

NTFS worked fine for me on a 32GB micro sdcard. I've been able to play movies that are sizes like 8gb stashed on the sdcard. Here's the exact bits I'm using: Nexus 7

I want to be able to put photos onto my Nexus 7 with the micro USB adapter. I purchased one of eBay that says it works on a Nexus 7 and I also installed Slick USB 2 Serial Terminal. I cannot get it to work. What do I need to do?

I'm missing OTG, lost root with the update and can't get it back no matter what I try. Does anybody know how to mount flash drives without root? I think I've seen someone talking about it.

Look back farther in this thread - someone links to an app to do that without root. But I'm surprised you lost root with the update. Mine is rooted stock and it took the update without blinking and never lost root. Were you on a custom ROM?

Nexus media importer will allow you to see your files and copy them, it's not the same as mounting.
I was completely stock rooted and lost it too btw. But if you've got wugs toolkit, that's basically the easy button for rerooting, takes a minute or 2.

I've tried, it says I'm rooted successfully but I'm really not, it never does anything different. I can't get busybox installed, I think that may be the problem, although 3 different installers have failed.
Just a thought, do you have the newest wugs toolkit, which actually lists the new firmware? I rooted fine without it, but it might just help. If not you could look up how to push busy box manually through adb.
