I decided to run without a protector and it cost me. I've got a line of small scratches parallel to each other along the line you where you would use your finger to scroll down the screen.

I don't know if I had some sand on my finger one day or what. They aren't deep enough to feel, and if you clean the glass with microfiber they disappear from view. But once the screen gets the slightest bit of fingerprints and oil on it, they show up again.

I'm debating whether to try to polish it out before I put a protector on. Does anyone know if our screen has any kind of anti-fingerprint coating I might mess up if I do?

Have you tried dampening the microfiber with a tiny bit of warm water and cleaning that area? Maybe it's a residue of some kind?

Yeah, gorilla glass is not scratch proof unfortunately. I allow my kids to use mine, so screen protector is a must for me. Sorry to hear about that.

The screen protector will most likely mask any scratches you have. Here is a picture of mine after dropping it. The shattered area at the lower right corner is obvious. What you don't see is all the spider cracks running up the entire length of the screen. They're only faintly visible when the unit is off and the screen is completely black. The screen protector is a matte finish anti-glare. I put one on my new N7 before I even turned it on for the first time.

My cell phone has gorilla glass and that thing is practically scratch proof. Absolutely no need for a protector. If it is in fact gorilla glass it is not going to get scratch by everyday items like keys and such. It sure as hell not going to get scratched by sand in your fingers. Unfortunately the Nexus 7 is not gorilla glass. I bought the Sopcast cover from Amazon that closes and protects the screen when it is not in use. I like it so far, no need for a screen protector.

Gorilla glass doesn't mean it won't scratch... and not being gorilla glass doesn't mean that's why it did.

Quartz sand is much harder than Gorilla Glass.

Sand, one of the active ingredients in sandpaper, will easily scratch Gorilla Glass, it's been shown repeatedly.

Yeah I caught the charging cable one night and of course flipped my N7 face down on the wood floor... normally not a problem but around here hey spread sand around like it was cheap water on a dry lawn and it gets up stairs on my office floor all the time, so now I have a little scratch right around the Enter key. Not as bad it sliding out of the case and landing on both bottom corners on a concrete floor a couple of weeks go!

A very small dab of a good glass top stove cleaner may help to polish the scratch out.

You do NOT want to use anything abrasive on the screen ... its a special coating that repells oil.

I had a Samsung Galaxy with gorilla glass and it was scratched a lot.

I pulled the gorilla glass off my old phone, I'll make a video if you guys want, but it will NOT scratch. Screwdrivers, knives, I tried it all and it wouldn't scratch.

Even bent the tip on one of my knifes.

Thanks guys. Didn't mean to start a Gorilla Glass debate. Since the scratches aren't visible when clean, I will get a protector and see if they stay hidden underneath it. Off to the protector threads.

People that live with and near hard sand know that GG scratches.

If you have friends in that situation, recommend a good screen protector.

Corning is the maker of Gorilla Glass, haven't heard of them making an almost GG, but not sure.

Others make the same or similar formulation.

Everybody, repeat after me.

Gorrilla Glass will scratch.

I just want to smack people upside the head when I hear them telling people not to use screen protectors because GG won't scratch. IT WILL. My OG Droid had it and definitely scratched. GG has improved scratch resistance from other materials as well as shatter resistance, but it is not a super material and not impervious to damage.

My old Ally never got a scratch (at least on the screen) , maybe this is the new improved version? Actually the Kindle Fire doesn't seem as susceptible to scratching as the Nexus 7 either.

My wife's e4gt has gorilla glass and it's all scratched up. She's not particularly hard on her devices either. Treated glass is more scratch and impact resistant than non treated. It's not scratch proof!

GG will scratch, but not under normal every day use as intended. I have numerous devices with GG and no screen protectors, I actually cant stand em lol. And for the most part none of my devices have scratches on em. My DX, no case, to screen protector, carried in my pocket(s), cat walked all over, dropped, tossed across the room, and not one scratch on it, the screen anyhow, I did manager to scratch the battery cover in a carpet mill. lol

I see someone recommended a little glass stove top cleaner to help improve scratches - anyone try this? My 10 month old, learning to pull herself up, managed to knock my N7 around and get a nice scratch on the front and I'd like to correct it as best as possible.

Ok here is the deal anything that has an abrasive should not be used on your screen. So NO.

Scratch is a scratch if you use the oven cleaner it will put scratches all over it. There is pretty much nothing you can do than leave scratch alone.

Sand is everywhere in this world and it is very hard and will scratch stuff so just take it easy and be glad your gadget still works.

I dont know where you heard such a thing but it is not true. GG is thinner and harder than typical glass; but it is Not scratch proof (or shatter proof).

I know dropping the N7 on its corner from 4' will shatter the piss out of it tho.

the breakthrough in the glass is not the hardness of it but the special bonding of the coating on the surface that resist the oil from fingerprints making it work well for a touch screen. As far is taking out a scratch on the surface you might try a wax or polish with an oil in it that will fill in the scratch optically making it clear.

I would rather look at a small scratch than an ugly screen protector. What's the point of saving the glass from scratches? In 2 years these devices will be obsolete and will be buying updates ones.

Agree with this - but also I bought a 5 dollar case for my nexus 7 and I have virtually no scratches. So I think as long as you make some decent attempt to protect it you will only end up with the smaller scratches instead of the ones that basically warrant buying a replacement.

I am still pretty upset about the lifting glass issues and think I want a samsung galaxy note 10.1...

GG the chemical properties of the first few microns of glass are changed during is manufacture, while the glass is still wet/hot.

Please note the words 'more resistant' 'high scratch resistance' not scratch proof or smash proof.
And there is no mention that the Nexus 7 has Corning GG.

last i checked, the Nexus 7 is made with "scratch resistant Corning Glass," but not Corning's actual Gorilla Glass...there is a difference. the glass on the N7 is cheaper (hence the low price tag of the tablet). also, i have no scratches on mine.

Yep mine has a few on them. I had a protector on mine and noticed it dulled the screen. I took that off and within a week I had a scratch. I want to know what in my empty pocket could do this. Must be the lint!

i never said it was a scratch immune piece of glass. i don't think anyone did. i did however say that it was scratch resistant, per both Asus and Corning, and that it wasn't the famed Gorilla Glass (which presumably provides even more scratch resistance).

Realized I never reported back. After cleaning and adding protector, scratches are invisible and have stayed so.

I'm wondering now if maybe what I scratched was actually the anti-reflective coating and not the glass.

Its been my understanding that the coating provides the protection from scratches for the most part...
