I own my new nexus 7 since a few days. It is a really nice device and everything seemed OK on mine until i tried to use the electronic compass. I tried a few compass apps, sky map, google map with compass... Compass doesn't work. It shows a wrong north or stays stuck.
I tried Android sensor tools app and the magnometer keeps showing a very high level of magnetic field. Calibration doesn't work.
Does anyone has a working compass on its nexus?
I'm not sure if i should try to change my nexus as i feel lucky that it is the only issue.

My Nexus 7 compass is also unresponsive. I just went outside to check my devices. For the compass, my android 4 ThinkPad Tablet works fine. My android 2.3 Casio G'zOne does as well. My android 4 Galaxy Note (SC-04D) spins in REVERSE! And my android 4.1 Nexus 7 doesn't respond at all. These tests were all done from the same place at the same time, and there were no sources of major interference I could see.
Previously I had checked my GNote with Google Sky, and two of three orientations were reversed. This anomaly showed up in google maps too. I called docomo's service center, and one of their tech support figured while on the phone with me that her compass was reversed as well. It is the weirdest thing.
So, arnolf, try using some other compass apps to see if the problem is more basic for you too. Maps may be fine and your tablet/OS is snafu.
Similar problem here, whilst the compass is generally stable, it's always out by about four or five degrees to the left. This is very apparent in maps, I know exactly where north is but the needle points slightly to the left of it. It's also quite noticeable in Sky, if I'm looking at, say, the moon dead ahead when I bring up the tablet the moon will be slightly to the left of the "real" one. Not sure this is just a nexus issue though, the same happens on my HTC One S. It's only more obvious on the nexus because of the larger screen I guess.
Well I am almost embarrassed to say this, but: Was out the other night with Google sky map trying to identify a planet. Could not get things to work because compass was off. Friend of mine said "Here, let me see that." So I handed it to him and he started chanting and waving the device around in a big figure 8 a few times. Then handed it back. Strangest thing--it worked! Compass was recalibrated. I guess he is a witch doctor or something.
I suspect the chanting did nothing, but waving around in a figure 8 seems somehow to reset the compass. Must be the orientation inertial sensors and GPS somehow working in the background. Now if I can get him to try that with my car...
