I finally got BBC iplayer working on my Nexus 7. Lost the machine on a train and bought a new one last week. Out of the box it updated itself and hey presto, incompatible with BBC I PLAYER and MEDIA PLAYER again!! Can anyone tell me what's happened?
BBCiplayer works on my N7 straight from the Play store.
Perhaps you haven't updated to 4.2. The BBC iPlayer is not currently listed as compatible with 4.2 (it says "2.2-4.1"); you can't install it from the app store using 4.2.

You can side load the current BBC iPlayer/BBC Media Player apps and they work fine on 4.2, though I haven't tested them with additional users.
My N7 is fully updated although I did install iPlayer before 4.2.
That was my point; you can get it from the play store before the update to 4.2 but not after - in other words for 4.2 users who don't already have it the only option is to side-load it from somewhere else.
It's good to know that the update doesn't disable it if it's already installed.
Many vendors sell apps outside of the market/play store simply because not all Android devices have access to the Google play store.
But in this case the apps are free but the BBC don't make them available for download. There are ways around this if you already have the app installed on another device by making a backup with something like ESFileExplorer and using the resulting .apk file to install on the other. This is what I did - I had iPlayer on my Motorola Milestone.
You don't actually need a PC to do it, I just used Google Drive to get the necessary files from the Milestone to the Nexus 7.

Interestingly I was notified of the availability of this update by the usual mechanism even though I had never installed it from the Play store (I side loaded it), so there's some smart stuff going on by the app updater in the Nexus 7.

does it work on your Nexus 7, because it doesn't on mine, I just get a pink spinner whilst the video preview sits there. It never loads the video, even though i'm on 10MB wifi.

Of course it works on my Nexus 7, I wouldn't have posted otherwise. Actually the old one worked fine as well but you had to go through hoops to install it.
Perhaps you need to update the BBC Media Player as well if you haven't already done so, it's the bit that actually does the work without a separate need for Flash. The iPlayer app is just a front-end to it.

well, I got it working, but it will only play back medium quality, if i set it to high it just spins.
ps. I realise that its the media player doing the playing. thanks.
I asked if it worked on your nexus 7 as there are people on here with more than one device, and often they seem to post without trying things on all their devices first.

Something odd then. My connection only gives me about 3Mb/s download speed on a good day and I have the Nexus 7 iPlayer set to high quality. The buffering delay can run to 10 seconds or so if I am doing other things on the internet but it always works. I just tried it while I was streaming high quality audio and downloading a film on my desktop PC and I initially thought I had stalled the iPlayer on the Nexus 7, but it finally started playing after about 15 seconds of "pink spin" and played the content smoothly enough. On its own it starts playing after maybe 5 seconds of spin.
