Having seen the brutality with which my various N7 owning young relatives treat the USB socket I think buying the dock will be essential. Otherwise the USB socket is likely to have a short lifespan, and I doubt replacing it is easy or cheap!

I can charge it with my powerpoint and my speaker system connects right up so I can blast my music louder than no dock anyway (Not that I have music on my tablet, my phone is the iPod of choice).
I think this dock will be staying on the shelf in my situation.
My case provides more or less the same functionality at less than half the price ($16.99).
I can prop my N7 up to watch movies, type with my bluetooth keyboard, charge my N7 and hookup my headphones. All for a much cheaper price.
Now, if it had a way of providing an HDMI output, that would have been different. But, that's not possible since it has no way to push the video signal out to the dock.
Plus, this would require me to take my N7 out of it's case just to get the same functionality that my case provides me.
No thanks!.

Think this one charges with the pogo socket so no need to plug in the USB socket every time it wants charging. So just need to pop it on the stand to charge.

That is correct. Trouble is that I still would have to take it out of the sleeve.
The micro USB is on the back the dock still has to be powered to use the pogo pins for charging, it just means your not plugging the micro USB into the N7 all the time.

Some reviews I've seen from people who have used the new dock are pretty poor.
Questions surrounding the overall fit of the tablet into the dock and the stability once mounted.

What I have heard was that the N7's USB port is not usable when in the dock. I was interested in using the dock and an OTG cable for connecting a flash drive - watch movies from the drive while charging - but apparently that is not possible. I'd like to hear confirmation one way or another from an actual owner.

Thanks for that I'll wait for a confirmation because if I can't I pretty much have no use fit it
