Default "Wipe": How severe?

So I have to unlock my bootloader to do this (I'm completely stock.), but it's saying that it wants to do a factory reset in the process for "security reasons".

What's the extent of this?

Is it going to reformat my SD too?

Will I have to re-download all my apps and reset all my custom system settings and SD card app-moves by hand?

When I re-log-in to my G-account will it pull everything back down, and if not is there a way I can back up the whole enchilada without having root in the first place?

Thanks! This kind of hassle is the reason I haven't bothered to root so far.

...Sean.

This method will root your N1 in a few seconds without unlocking your bootloader or erasing anything.

I used the method in the original post to root last week from a completely stock Nexus One. I unlocked the bootloader following the 'fastboot oem unlock'.
