im guessing this is the only extra process because of windows 7.
No, it isn't.
In short: you're doing something wrong. All you need is the Android SDK and the default USB drivers that are listed as one of the downloadable content.
Rooting isnt tough, but it does take some time, especially if you are new to it. That said, you don't really seem to have your hart into it. You should really be relishing the whole project. If you are already feeling overwhelmed or that it is a pain, I suggest you just stop now. Rooting is not for you in my opinion. Also, I don't know what HTSsync is...I didnt use anything like that. All, I needed was the SDK (for the USB drivers), and then the Recovery image, ROM, and GApps package.

i wonder how long the rest of the process is going to take? lol

You are definitely doing something wrong & you are also posting in the wrong section of this forum. Post your problems & look for solutions in the Rooting section of the Nexus 1 forum.
It isn't an easy process for those new to it (I cannot remember how to type the commands to flash a new radio LOL) but follow the guide in the above section & it should be not too difficult (if I can do it, anybody can )

glad you got it done. i didn't get to finish last night as i had to leave, but now is the time.
The only tough part for me was getting the freaking drivers. I had alot of trouble getting everything in that department to work with the sdk. I got it though. IT took me, eh 15 minutes 20 minutes maybe? But yet again, for a high schooler, I'm pretty nerdy :P

Yeah I rooted last night. Well actually started trying the night before and finally got it last night. The usb files were the hardest part. It took me finding a walk through vid on youtube installing SDK to get it going. Once I got the drivers in, it was a breeze. Now I am loving it!
