Installed CM7 yesterday. Don't like being kept in the dark. I have run linux slackware for over 10 years now, I prefer to have control over the os that I use.

I have been using the CyanogenMod (CM7) since build #10 with no problems.
Am now on CM7 build #26 and it is slick and smooth with no video/playback problems and lots of extra goodies added.
For anyone thinking of changing to CM7, my advice is that you must wipe your SD card and phone memory before loading CM7 and then rebuild (not restore) your phone from scratch otherwise you may/will run into problems.
My trackball is the one component of N1 that I am less than pleased with. I have to roll the ball crazy like to get the cursor to move, it should be one character per "click" but on mine I have to whip the ball to get the cursor to move. Mine might just be faulty as I have seen no one else complain.

It was October last year. Short/long story is I sent it in for dusty screen and they refused to honour warranty because they claimed the water sensors were tripped and were not responsible to fix. After weeks of "escalation" I refused to pay the price of repair($400) so I asked them to return my phone UN-repaired but upon receipt and an unexpected shipping charge to my MasterCard my phone's mike was broken! So it was another three weeks of "We are not fixing your phone even if we broke it because the little red sticker inside says we don't have too."
When I called HTC corporate and asked for a customer relations manager I got some action and reluctantly agreed to $150.00 to have the screen and microphone repaired. I only agreed to pay because I wanted a working Nexus One and was frustrated as hell.
I see this week that Apple computer has changed their policy regarding these stupid "water indication stickers" and are now honouring warranty as they should.

I just read that ViewSonic plans to ship their ViewPad 4 with, wait for it, Gingerbread v2.4. That is correct, word is leaking out that a 2.4 release is due in April which will still be called Gingerbread. This might explain why we STILL do not have Gingerbread 2.3 without rooting and getting a custom ROM from someone other than Google.

I hope that's the case. People with the N1 should be one of the 1st to get 2.4 considering this is a google phone and they need to keep it up to date with the new ones coming out. It's not as if the hardware on the N1 cannot handle it.
2.4 will still be called gingerbread and will supposedly be compatible with honeycomb apps (2.3 is/was not).. Heard this on a rambling tech podcast at twit.tv. For what it's worth.
If true we'll probably be going straight to 2.4 whenever that is..
I've always defended the fragmentation bs out there to my non android friends. Now I'm starting to get confused..

Yeah, Google is so going to confuse the people that might look into Android phones if us regs are starting to get confused. Google should have stuck with a seperate naming convention for the Android tablet since it's different from Android phone
To be honest, after using 2.3 gingerbread (Cyanogen) for the past month on my n1, it really adds nothing useful other than better copy and paste. 2.3 is dead on arrival.

it's actually an improvement in UI... and a little in system speed ,can't say what's what until we get the full 2.3 from gugle ....and cyanogen hasn't got to full stable release yet

I'm still wondering why Google is taking its sweet time to release Gingerbread for the Nexus Ones. It's what...7 weeks since they released the Nexus S? I think that's enough time to get the early adopters to jump from the Nexus One to the Nexus S. If Any a non Google phone gets Gingerbread (on release or update) before the Nexus One...gosh I think my faith in Google will diminished.

If another phone is released with Gingerbread or a Gingerbread OTA goes to another phone before the N1 gets it then I can say that I probably will not get another Nexus phone. After all, isn't getting the newest updates first (other than Vanilla Android) the main reason for having a Nexus?

Yes my point exactly! That is the main selling point of the Nexus phones. I mean yeah, I understand that we're not first anymore but I expect us to be second. There were a few phones demoed in CES that were running Gingerbread. It'd be sad if those OEMs released their phones running Gingerbread before we get our OTA. If that happens, I guess we know the life expectancy of a Nexus phone
I don't accept that there is any technical reason for the delay: Google have simply decided to give Samsung a good long clear run with the Nexus S the only 'pure' gingerbread phone.
As for those of us who shelled out good money for a Nexus One less than a year ago in the expectation of getting the latest soon after it was available? As far as Google is concerned we can just bend over and feel privileged to get shafted by the awesome 'not evil' Google.
Google is demonstrating the kind of honesty with it's customers we expect from Apple, and the kind of ethics we expect from Microsoft.

Any bona fide evidence of this or just a general feeling of paranoia and persecution?
From what I've read about the Nexus S and the 2.3 updates on Rogers in Canada, I'd rather wait until the update was stable to reap the marginal benefits that 2.3 has over 2.2.

You don't really need a source... my friend has a nexus s and its pretty buggy so I don't mind that Samsung gets it first and we have to wait because when it comes out I want something that isn't gonna piss me off
What I want to know is why we haven't had all the beta / not final releases yet? With Froyo we had loads of pre release versions leaking out before the final release. For Gingerbread we've had nothing. Grrrrrrr. I have to just sit back and wait, I might try rooting, but I'm not sure if I'd lose access to some market stuff by running a non standard ROM.

We're not the 'Guinea pigs' for the OS anymore...the Nexus S is. They are getting all of the issues with Gingerbread.
OTA is on it's way. Certain Dev slotted devices have been sent the OTA. Not sure if it is final yet or if there will be one more last minute push.
I'll flash back and see if I can extract the URL for the update. I wasn't sure the first time was Gingerbread or just an "test update"...
Have faith all.

I have wiped and restored my phone over and over again and it will not update again. I have the phone hooked to my machine, so once I get the update again, the log capture will get the URL and I'll post it here.
Phone is not rooted, reason I got the OTA the first time, this is a pure dev phone. I am working on a project with some others for a group Android game and the Nexus One and several Android phone need to work together on it. I have 12 phones lined up on my desk for this project and luckily, I have several others in the house that can help me test the latest code. we're being funded by a private group of investors and we hope we can get this thing going.
Anyhow, still no update, called Google, gave them sone yappity yap on why I had to reflash, they are putting my IMEI back into the pool to get the update again. Will let you all know when it gets here.
I am also in the Dev Pool to get the Official Gingerbread Sense for the MyTouch 4G as well, but no ETA on that. I know there are some leaks, but I swore to my wife that since I am using this one as my daily phone, no rooting and flashing on this one.
I dealt with HTC repair before on another issue and it was awful, not everyone has my problems with them but once bitten twice shy.
But have you dealt with Nexus One support? It's incredible.
I bought a bootloader unlocked N1 on eBay (barely under warranty) and it rebooted constantly. Called up HTC support and they were understanding. Overnighted me a refurb replacement (I trust refurbs more cause they are tested to death).
Worked great but the screen had terrible burn-in. I could permanently see the Pandora buttons at the bottom of the screen.
Rang HTC again, they overnight another (perfect) replacement.
All this and I was not the original owner. Pretty good support if you ask me.

That does sound really nice support. I only used HTC once to get a replacement battery cover. I would love to get HTC again but that's not likely going to happen anytime soon.
I dealth with the N1's customers support when it was ran by Google itself and had an excellent experience with them. I haven't dealth with HTC customer service since Google closed up shop on the N1 so I don't know how they are.
I am wondering out loud if Gingerbread will be the last update we get. The next big version of android will be Ice cream which looks like it will bring the big UI improvements that we all thought would be in Gingerbread. But the way they are rolling out GB to us it seems like we may be a second, third, or forth thought come that time.

I thought that Google would take care of the OS support and HTC the hardware support. I guess HTC is doing both now?

Yeah, it makes me hesitant about the Nexus line now. It seems that Google is showing its true colour about supporting an older model. I hope that's not the case but this is how it looks like so far. 3 months...3 bloody frigging cold months!!! haha, yeah kinda piss that GB isn't out for the N1 yet and I don't have one XD Just imagine how upset/vocal I'd be if I had my Nexus One.
Long before the Nexus One launched, the media was filled with speculation, buzz, rumors, and excitement regarding the possibility of a "Google Phone". The rumors were put to rest when Google announced the Nexus One, the first ever Google ... Read More
