Default Emoji Handcent

Hey guys, im trying to use Emojis in my messages but everytime i send it to someone it comes out like a little box or a question mark.. Sometimes it only comes out as a code, but i can recieve Emojis.. What can be wrong..???Ive been trying to send it to my girlfriend who has the verizon iphone 4

My understanding is that very few handsets can send or receive Emojis natively (iPhone should be one of them... get her to check her settings) unless they have an an app, like Handcent, that allows them to.
