I charged my N1 last night, been listening to some internet radio (less than 30 mins) and surfing the web (less than 30 mins total, I'd say). No phone calls. And maybe less than 20 mins of email. And now my battery is dead. It's 2.30 PM.
I'm hoping the battery is either defective or hasn't reached peak performance. I'm not happy.
I sure hope (for the sake of everyone else) that yours is defective. Ive been using gtalk (2 convos, pretty long) and a few short phone calls, few sms and some browsing and about 10 emails and its at 79%. It was unplugged at 6AM

Unplugged mine at Noon, and it was dead at around 3:30AM. Used it a lot more than I normally would as I was using new features etc. Browed the web, put music on the phone, few phone calls, texting. Settings say screen used 56% of the battery

That sounds muuuuch better than mine. Maybe the internet radio really drained it? I was using the "A Online Radio" (odd name) app from the Market.

How did you get email to work? I can't setup yahoo, or mac mail. It tells me the username/pass is wrong when I know its right

It's probably because of the internet radio. My Nokia E66's battery will die in about an hour or so if I listen to internet radio. With only 3G connection (e-mail) and internet browsing it'll go all day.
So would it be okay if we didn't charge it all the way fully before we started using it? I'm actually waiting to go out and just got the phone about an hour ago, still charging (still orange light) - I haven't turned it on yet.

I wouldn't be too worried if you don't have time to charge it fully.
"Lithium-ion is a very clean system and does not need priming as nickel-based batteries do. The 1st charge is no different to the 5th or the 50th charge. Stickers instructing to charge the battery for 8 hours or more for the first time may be a leftover from the nickel battery days. "

In 2 hours of use since a full charge, I'm at 80% full. 57% to the screen and 10% to calls (roughly 11 minutes worth). I've been playing with it a lot, so I'd be happy with 7 - 10 hours of use.
Pandora is really kind to battery life. I run it about 2 hours a day (drive in to the city, drive home) and it barely affects my battery. Seems like web browsing is the biggest battery hog. If I don't go on a website my phone is good for the day, if I do however I can drain it in an hour easily. Leaving Bluetooth on has very minimal effect (average 2% consumption in stats) but leaving WiFi on seems to be very bad for battery life! I find I actually get longer life using the network as opposed to wifi. Hi Aim idle reported about 14% of battery...I deleted it after I saw that.
The biggest thing is screen brightness! Set it to auto and forget about it...if you are in a dark room (which is most of my day) it will dim it to the lowest setting. If you are outside it will crank it to the highest setting. My screen averages 33% consumption.

Unplugged from wall around 730 this morning... Sent about 100 texts at work, did the occasional browsing and email, and a coworker of mine connected it to wifi and surfed for about 35 minutes as he explored the phone...then I listened to pandora on my 45 minute drive home... Oh and made a couple of calls throughout the day.
Came home at 6pm and plugged into wall with 49% remaining.
This is my normal usage as when I had the iPhone... But with the iPhone i'd be down to about 20-25 percent come 5pm.
My battery life has been very good so far. Unlugged it last night at about 10pm, went to sleep, used it a bit at work and it's currently 4:17pm with 34% left.
A tip to those who are new to Android if you don't already know. You can long press on one of your home pages and choose "Shorcut" -> "Settings" -> "Battery Settings" to create a shortcut to quickly see what's using up your battery. Or you can easily make shortucts to other oft used settings.
Been on mine since 2AM. Took a 4 hour nap but for the most part it's been just playing around with things, installing apps, and lots of talk time. Battery indicator just now turned red but not low enough for the low battery warning. Sadly I didn't look at the percentage before I plugged it in....but that's pretty good for the amount of use it's had since 2AM.
Keep in mind i've previously owned a Sidekick so anything after that is uphill.
8am - Start Time:
Checking emails throughout the day with touch down
20 mins of calls
couple of pictures
a video at 5:00
an 40 min conversation
6:45 pm - battery at 11%
Is there a good battery monitoring app that monitors % of battery life left over the course of a day and spits it onto a graph? That'd be nice to see.

1) Pick up BatteryLife from the Market. It's a nice widget and tells you your battery status.
2) Apparently the N1's battery gets depleted quickly on phone calls.
3) Check your apps. Many apps have background processes. Some of these processes run all the time and can drain your battery. Check usage.
4) Turning down the display brightness can help too.
5) SYNC'ing can drain battery, particularly if your signal ain't great.

Not familiar with Touch Down, but does it sync with Exchange non-stop/continuously? If so, I'd guess that's what draining your batt. Can you change your sync schedule on touch down?
Ok, so now I'm a little concerned.
4hr 37 min since unplugged
37% battery remaining
63% display (46m34s... thats like a percentage point/minute with only browsing and market place)
standby 8%
idle 8%
browser 7%
system 6%
voice calls 4% (55s!? thats 2.5 percentage points/minute talking, or 40 minutes of total talk time per charge!)
wifi 2%
OS 2%
something is seriously wrong with my battery, correct?
GPS is off, bluetooth is off... any suggestions welcomed!

That or there's an app that's constantly running that is sucking down your battery.
You people dont understand that "Mobile Network" is killing your battery. Turn it off when you dont need it. No you dont need it on to make calls or TXT

I downloaded advanced task killer and I had these running:
gmail
messaging
voice
settings
clock
google voice
goggles
gallery
browser
I killed them all and we'll see what happens, but I have a hard time seeing any of those being this resource intensive.
Related, I didn't realize that the apps just keep running in the background, is the only way to manage them to kill them? I suppose that "killing" the gmail, messaging, etc. that it will still notify me of new messages? And then I just need to kill the app every time? That seems a bit redundant.
There are other threads about task killing on Android software and that its not really necessary. As far as rogue apps, thats a different story, but if your battery is 60% down after unlplugging only 4 hrs ago, you may have a bad app or 2...or you are using it more than you think..it it hard to take your eyes off this sexy screen

Agreed about not really needing taskill software. I was actually referring to a rogue app causing it but didn't work my response properly.
Applications I have downloaded:
Advanced Task Killer Free
Androrb
Battery Widget
Goggles
Google Sky Map
I just deleted Androrb to see if maybe it was the culprit (didn't work well anyways). I can literally watch my screen for less than 2 minutes and a percentage point from battery widget ticks off.
Also you might want to check your charge state. I didn't realize it until just a bit ago but the light on the top turning green doesn't indicate a FULL charge. I think it may turn on at 90%. Make sure you charge it until it says "charged" on the lock screen.
I downloaded Task killing software and have it kill all running apps about once an hour. I dont know why, but I'll kill all running apps... Put my phone down... Come back 10 minutes later, and there are 10 apps or so running that I didnt even open. I'm not talking about OS required apps, but more things like Youtube, Voice Talk, etc etc.
But my battery seems to be running fine...
Unplugged at 8 AM...
Sent and received about 30 texts...
Connected to WIFI once I got to work...
Did some browsing...
Added a tweeting app to follow all major sports news
A couple coworkers did some browsing of the phone
and I have been playing with the phone pretty much all the time (I can't put it down!)

It's 1:11PM now and battery is at 79%
Would you mind looking at your battery use in settings and telling me what your display percentage is and click on display to see how much time on that includes? TIA

Unplugged at 10AM. It's now 1.40PM. Battery is at 60%.
I listened to Pandora for a bit (maybe 30 mins), but stopped when my batt got down to 90%. Had one 30 second call, and a few mins of playing with the web, etc. Also sent a couple of text messages.
I had installed Fring, too, which was running this whole time. Maybe that was the problem? I've killed it now with Advanced Task Killer.
Like others here, the Display is at 56%, time on being 30m 42s.
One other thing: even though it's been unplugged for almost four hours, the battery use says 1h 41m 18s since unplugged. It's clearly counting since noon, not since I unplugged it. Anyone else got the same behavior?

Yesterday I had mine unplugged for about 8 hours... When i checked battery use it says that it has been only running about 3 hours at that point... I was like wtf? Then i remembered i did a battery pull about halfway through.

If you are suspecting/troubleshooting a potential rogue app sucking down battery or causing problems then you don't need to simply kill it with a task killer. You need to uninstall it long enough for testing. Because you kill an app doesn't mean it won't relaunch at some point due to your phone activity.

You are running about the same percentage that I was in relation to the screen. I deleted androrb, and got roughly 3 minutes in between percentage point losses with the screen on with 10 minute timeout. Then I deleted google goggles and sky map. Now I am at about 5m40s in between percentage point losses (which appears closer to normal according to rookie1082's experience of about 6m50s), so you may want to try deleting some apps.
Interesting that it wasn't just one app causing power drain. I'll reload goggles and sky map separately and see if both of them effect the power or just one.

i read that a battery with half a charge gets worse reception. It takes alot of juice to ping out constantly. Get an app like anycut and turn everything off till you need it then just hit the on button.
The official numbers for battery life are very good for 3g. 7hours which is about 2 hours more than iphone and 250 minutes on standbye which is about 50 minutes less than iphone. If you're seeing really bad numbers then its just usage.
Quick question. For those of you that think you have poor battery life, are you coming from another android phone or iphone? I upgraded from a G1 and with the same usage as I had before my battery life is significantly better than it was on my G1. Also keep in mind that you just got your phone so you're more likely to be playing with it more, dowloading new apps, showing it to friends, etc. which of course all contribute to a greater battery use.
I'm in now way comparing this, however. There was definitely something draining my power, but I think I figured it out. I'll just be a little more deliberate in installing apps and testing the impact they make from now.
And I haven't used the live backgrounds at all so I have no idea how they affect power consumption.
I'm coming from a 2G iPhone, which would last a couple of days under normal use. I agree with rynowhi - I think it may have been a few apps (Fring is looking like a possibility, although I haven't had it uninstalled long enough yet) that were draining the battery. We'll see. Battery life doesn't seem to be a general problem with the Nexus One.

My experience with he droid and laptops is that you need to FULLY charge and kill a lithium battery a few times when you get it to get the full charge cycle out of the battery. My droid rarely runs out now.
Long before the Nexus One launched, the media was filled with speculation, buzz, rumors, and excitement regarding the possibility of a "Google Phone". The rumors were put to rest when Google announced the Nexus One, the first ever Google ... Read More
