Question 3 Mobile UK - Sim Only

Im looking at getting a sim only contract with 3, 15 with 300 mins, unlimitied txts and internet on a 1 month rolling. Has anyone had any issues with 3 and the N1? Seems like a good deal but have heard bad storys about 3 and unlocked phones.

Cant wait for my N1 to turn up

Cheers!

Rob.

I have heard the bad stories about 3 and unlocked phones as well.

I also remember seeing a thread about a guy who had bought about 3 Heros' for family members & couldn't get any decent network coverage. Think he was trying to cancel in the end. Try to find the threads by doing a search.....

I have 3uk sim only on my nexus. But, I didn't want to bother with a contract (even tho' it's only 30 days notice to cancel) until I'd experienced the coverage so I have a "free" (cost me 1.99 from the shop cos the free cards I'd ordered from the 'net still haven't arrived) PAYG sim card. (You can add 5per month unlimited internet bolt-on if the 150mb isn't enough.)

I haven't had much chance to test the coverage - mostly been at home; no 3g atm but it's been there over the last few days. I'll try and keep an eye on it and let you know. My Tmob 2g phone also loses signal from time to time here at home.

The guy in the 3 shop said he'd had a memo to say that, whilst they weren't going to be selling the phone new, 3 will be supporting it (he implied they would be selling any trade-ins they received )

I'm using Orange with my N1 but used a 3 sim in an unlocked iPhone for over a year... no troubles at all.

If you search the market for Skype there's a 'Skype for 3' app IIRC. I doubt it'll work well, VOIP over 3G is painful in my experience (i've tried it on many handsets and networks).

Oh, my-oh-my... this phone is so clever ..... what it's been doing is switching away from 3g when it detects a wi-fi signal. As soon as I toggle off the wi-fi (widgit on home screen) the 3G signal comes back..... duh,

Do you have no signal on the phone at all when it detects wi-fi? it's great if the phone automatically uses the wi-fi but if there's no signal to receive a phone call, I'm not so sure!
Sorry I've not ordered mine yet.. Just curious!

Yep, seems to be the case. I've just returned from walking the dog during which, every time I checked, I had 3G. Am now at home with wifi and, like before, as the wifi symbol appears at the top of the screen the 3G symbol disappears and the nexus defaults to ?2g? - I'm not sure what exactly - it's still showing 3 as the network and I can make telephone calls, receive messages etc.

Hmmmm.... I may have it all wrong about the 3G/wifi issue. Now I'm wondering whether it could just be that the status bar only has space for one or other of the symbols? Page 48 of the Nexusone-userguide suggests that there will be a max of 3 status icons showing.

UK's 3 and T-Mobile Confirm Nexus One Plans - The European Nexus One might have multi-touch - Softpedia

A comment on this site suggests the 15 sim only deals will support the nexus.

"It’s a great Internet phone and we expect plenty of people to import it to the UK. Our 15 SIMs are ready and waiting,” David Kerrigan, head of Internet services at 3

Yeah... the guy in the shop wanted to sell me a sim-only rolling monthly deal but I headed him off.
I can confirm that my PAYG sim works with no problems. I bought 10 credit instore but if you do it online you get double text allowance I think.
Had a look at the Orange and O2 deals but with those the internet allowance is credited the month following your top-up and I wanted it available straight away so I could play with my new toy.

Default 3 mobile and Nexus

I've been pleased to find this discussion but note that it stopped early February 2010.

Is everyone who bought a Nexus and using 3 mobile 15 contract still happy with things? How is 3 mobile coverage? In my experience it's not as good as they say it is.

I'm debating between Nexus and (ooops, should I say it?) iPhone.

Has Skype come to the Nexus yet? I can use Skype on my iPod Touch in wifi mode.

Would be very pleased to hear responses.

Thanks.

Still happy with mine, only occasional coverage issues (walking in the langdales there wasn't any on the tops but then I wouldn't expect that).
I'm not on contract - have sim only and I top up 5 if I want data and 10 if I need texts - I'm not a heavy phone user, just a gadget freak!!

Check on the 3uk page - don't think 15 month's notice is still available

Just checked - it's not on the site, they want you to call
>> To get a SIM contract with 300 minutes, unlimited texts, unlimited 3-to-3 calls and unlimited internet for just 15 a month call 0800 358 4425<<

Thank you very much for that. It's very helpful.

Was actually on the phone to 3 as you wrote and the sales advisor said I could take out the 15 a month option and get a month free too!

The main problem will be coverage. As you say, not in the more rural parts of UK.

Next, I shall have to buy the phone!

15 Sim only deal with "Unlimited Internet" but it wasn't

I got 3 because (having tried all the networks with PAYG 1st..) where I spend [wife's house in Ascot] most time, a notorious mobile bad-spot, 3 was the best for 3G speed & signal strength... Other fine network providers in other locations will give different results...

As to speed I get about 1Mb at home (Ascot), have seen 3.9Gb (Waitrose car park, Wokingham..) but coverage is patchy..

IMHO all network providers lie & mislead about speed, coverage & the quality & ability of their support staff... I could of course be mistaken: Feel free to quote me..

Cheers!

I've decided not to buy either the Nexus1 nor (tch) iPhone at present.

I looked at the specs and potential apps and thought, you know, I can do that on my iPod Touch with my mifi - IF I get a signal - plus I weigh myself down with decent cameras.

I'm not really into cameraphones. And if I do need a satnav, which is hardly at all, I still have my TomTom.

I have a perfectly acceptable Nokia for making calls/texts, and, if I need it, net access. Age means it's sometimes difficult to make out what's on a tiny screen, and arthritic fingers find it difficult to negotiate phone keyboards.

I'm probably longer in the tooth than The Artfullodger and co.

I'm not convinced that I REALLY need the gadget.

As for network coverage, it is an issue. Some places near Loughborough, Middle England, have blind spots for all networks, and I have a friend who couldn't even get VF coverage in her home in Nottingham.

Now, if WIMAX became a reality and someone manufactured an interactive tablet which enabled multimedia input...

Thanks to all who replied.

Technology will ALWAYS get better/faster/cheaper... and whatever you buy today, in 6 months time they'll always be a better/faster/cheaper one...

Hey! Good luck whatever you do...

Cheers!

No, the coverage is good enough - it is that phone auto switches to wifi when it can so there is no need to use 3G and hence no icon.

Tried downloading the Skype software to my N1 with no luck. Then tried on my Nexus S, and again no luck. So I went in and asked a sales rep for 3 and they said the unlimited Skype app was only download-able on mobiles sold through 3. Other than the Skype, I had no problems. Hope this answers your question.
