Thats great news...someone over on XDA Forums got theirs yesterday. He posted pics and everything. I ordered mine from bestbuy online. But I'm gonna go to my local sprint store this evening and see if I can buy one. If they let me, then I'm gonna come home and cancel my Bestbuy order.

Hi,

Quentyn from Phandroid.com here. Wondering how you were able to get into a Sprint store when it doesn't open until 10am. Do you have any proof that the Nexus S is being sold early? (Like a picture of the device in your possession?) I don't mean to sound overly skeptical, I just want to make sure I can believe the story before I publish.

My local Sprint store opens at 9am, maybe his does as well?

On the other hand, I just talked to someone at my Sprint store, and they said that they can't sell it until the 8th

I already called his and checked online. They don't open until 10. May I get the number for your sprint store? [Or just the city.] I want to follow up on this story ASAP.

My store in Kansas City is selling them today! Just called the store. Going to pick one up now. Of course they have a wait list they attend to first. They are slipping me one.

Checked with Sprint Corporate and they said that his phone was NOT purchased legally, since the street date is May 8 and they are NOT allowed to sell the phones until then. The same applies to Best Buy and other vendors who carry the phone. I was told they would welcome any information to help their legal investigation to determine how this person got this phone early.

FYI - per Sprint Corporate, in memo sent to their stores LAST WEEK, any one selling the Nexus S 4G early will be terminated.

So, how exactly did you get this phone early?

Default Nexus S 4G is for sale today

I just had a Sprint Rep call me that I spoke to a couple of days ago. She said they just got out of a meeting and were told that they can go ahead and start selling the Nexus S. This store is a Sprint store in Fort Worth.

Guess the word isn't getting out to all stores. Called mine in the ATL area, and even after being told about the supposed "corporate email" and checking, said that they couldn't sell it until Sunday.

Sprint has done this with several phones. I remember when the HTC Hero was sold a couple days early and some HTC Evo owners had theirs early when ordered. These things happen all the time. It's not hard to believe.

I also would like to see videos and pictures. Not for proof because I believe you guys but because I like pictures and videos of phones. Seems better when they're in action.

The Sprint store in my area is a corporate store and they have disavowed any such "corporate email" ...meaning I'm stuck waiting until Sunday >.<

welp, no go. local sprint corporate stores had the phone in stock, would not sell til the 8th. local best buy stores had the phone in stock, would not sell til the 8th.

got halfway through actually buying the phone at best buy, then got stuck when the sales person called to activate the phone and was told it wasn't able to be activated or sold until the 8th.

anyway, here's a pic of a stack of the nexus s from today:

I picked it up yesterday, once I get off work I will put a video together and post the link. I will answer questions about the phone if people have any.

Slowwww down Richard, atleast in my area, the sprints stores were sent a memo that they are able to sell them early (according to the employees). I didnt get hooked up, I just upgraded, it wasent a new activation or anything, I was just in the store and asked. They told me they are not promoting it but they can sell it. I dont think anyone has to goto jail over it!

What do we think the chances are Sprint will start charging people who use the built in hotspot feature?

I wonder. Good question. I'm thinking they might just look the other way.

Time will tell. Can a custom rom hide what your doing?

I know Sprint has a hotspot app of their own, which is what they charge for. I've used Wireless Tether (the root program) and the built in hotspot through Cyanogen on my EVO and never saw an extra charge, but new phones mean new surprises. I'd be incredibly happy if the built in hotspot worked without extra charges. That means I wouldn't have to root my phone, period.

when the evo was release the hotspot feature was free for a while, when the epic came out i think i had about 2 months of it for free. they dont start really going after it for a bit, my only guess is to try and snag some users into buying it

Wait, the 4G is on all the time on this phone? That's ridiculous. That's going to eat through the battery in no time.

I see, there's just no toggle. You have to go in through the settings.

And "of course it can be turned off" isn't a foregone conclusion. The Thunderbolt didn't allow you turn switch off the LTE when it first came out (I know, different manufacturers, but still).

You can download an app to toggle to 4G and there have been videos showing it can be turned off and on.

Yes, I found a few videos that showed the 4G being turned on and off.

I can't say for Sprint, but I have a Nexus One on T-Mobile. The mobile hotspot and tethering option has always been there and is able to be used at any time without paying extra to T-Mobile. I'm assuming this is because it's a Google Phone... NS might be similar.

Either because it was a Google phone or because T-Mobile was in fourth place and desperate for customers.

If a carrier tampers with the Nexus line it will fail to be a true android Google experience.

Tethering is inherent to Android now. If Sprint messes with it, then you don't really have a Nexus S. What you've got is just another fragmented phone that won't get updates in a timely fashion.
