Unfortunately, for now, this method is only for stock users of the "T-Mobile" version of the N1. If you are rooted and have an unlocked bootloader, I have special instructions below.
There're are a few ways to end up at FRF83. If you're on 2.1, go to FRF50, then straight to FRF83.
If you've already flashed 50, then 72, take the file from 72 to 83.
If you don't know your build number, go to settings, about phone
2. Rename the file to update.zip
3. Note that if you're using Windows and don't have "show file extensions" turned on in the file explorer you won't see a .zip. Just rename it to "update" (no quotes, of course) because it's already a zipped file.
4. Copy the update.zip file onto the root of your microSD card (that means not in any folders)
5. With your Nexus One off, hold down the trackball and press the power button.
6. You'll be booted into a white screen with three Android robots on skateboards. Select "Bootloader."
7. On the next screen, select "Recovery."
8. Your phone will reboot, giving you a picture of the Android robot and an exclamation point inside a triangle.
9. Now press the power button and volume up button at the same time. It could take a couple of tries.
10. Now (using the trackball this time) choose "Apply sdcard:update.zip" and let things run their course.

Special Instructions for AT&T N1 owners
This file is an update from ERE27 to Froyo, which means that if you want to use it, you will manually have to install ERE27 first, then run this file to get your frozen dessert. This requires you to unlock your bootloader!
Special Instructions for Rooted Users - *This may now be outdated.
You can get this update, which has been prerooted for you by Paul @ MoDaCo. You know the drill on how to install these ROMs:
How to update (I HAVEN'TE DONE THIS YET AND THIS COULD POSSIBLY RESULT IN A BRICKED DEVICE EVEN THOUGH THE DOWNLOAD IS FROM GOOGLE.. BE CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!):
1. Download file from link up there.
2. Rename the file to update.zip (or "update" depending on your window version)
3. Note that if you're using Windows and don't have "show file extentsions" turned on in the file explorer you won't see a .zip. Just rename it to "update" (no quotes, of course) because it's already a zipped file.

I have a total of 275 M of free memory according to Taskiller O_O!!!!
I'm install adobe flash 10.1 beta from market place now.
Doesnt look like any applications can be move to SD card atm....
My understanding about the Apps2SD support is that devs have to enable it. There is increased piracy risk, so Google didn't want to force it on them. But I feel it's going to become expected for devs to enable this fairly quickly.
doesnt work for me i get error E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
I thought that at first too. Turns out you need to press the trackball on that step and not the power button and it worked for me despite seeing that message.
I am now succesfully running 2.2. But I ordered the N1 direct from google with no carrier (I am in UK)
doesnt work for me i get error E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
*edit apparently this update doesnt work for the ATT/Rogers model
i got that E: Can't open/cache/recovery/command error..
Didn't matter. I was still able to update it! After it installed it.. didn't have to hit reboot or anything. It did it all by it self.
Got Froyo 2.2 running now!

Yes! Just updated my UK phone, worked a treat, although my calendar apps no longer work. Pure calendar widget, pure grid calendar and calendar pad. Main calendar app works fine. Phone much snappier now and little tweaks keep showing up. Excellent.
I've added this to the original post, but 2.2 has been rooted! Thanks to Cyanogen (no surprise here)
Instructions to root 2.2 are in the first post now, as well. Enjoy!
In case you don't know, root access will allow you to do things such as take screenshots w/ drocap2, remove system apps you don't use, flash a custom recovery, etc...

That's the AT&T build and unless you install the ERE27 version first, this update zip file will not work. Not sure where you get ERE27, but I'm sure somebody at xda knows.
Hopefully there will be an AT&T version out soon. Since this started with the press versions first, and now this is up for the TM, I kind of expected that the ATT version would be last. I think I can wait........
This is driving me nuts!! Can someone clearly explain how to manually update the At&t N1 to froyo. The procedures published so far only work for the T-Mobile version.
I take it that that if you manually update that you are not necessarily required to also root the phone? I'm assuming that the root step is purely optional?

No root is required to manually update your stock Nexus One.
The rooted version is only for people with that's rooted already.
The upgrade has worked fine for me. I have one issue that I think devs will have to fix. Let me know if you guys aren't seeing this. Google seems to have changed the way widgets can access the stock calendar. I had a widget that displayed my unread mail count, and it crashes on startup. Also the Pure Calendar widget loads, but cannot pull calendar data. Selecting calendars in settings of Pure shows no options.
you cant do it yet for the ATT version unless you unlock your bootloader, which basically means voiding your warranty. unlocking the bootloader is one of the steps in rooting your phone if i understand correctly, so if you have waited this long, then there's not much sense in unlocking the bootloader now.
having said that, i might go ahead and unlock mine to install the update on my ATT nexus anyway. i dunno...this stinks.
If you understand fastboot this should be fairly simple. If not it might take you a day or so.
If you're trying to do it without unlocking the bootloader I got nothing or you.
Can't update to 2.2 on my Nexus One (AT&T version)
I am another Nexus One user (AT&T version) who can’t upgrade to the 2.2 version. I get that error others seem to be getting, my Nexus One is not nor has ever been rooted.
I really hope that this isn’t related to AT&T wanting tethering removed so that you can purchase “their” tethering add-on for like another $60. I know that AT&T butchered the backflip’s Android OS. I am worried that AT&T will stop Google from releasing a full 2.2 stock OS to Nexus One, or even block the IMIEs altogether.

No, the reason you can't update your AT&T N1 is because it is not running ERE27.
The file leaked right now is only for ERE27 to Froyo. When the file for the AT&T version is leaked, I will also post it up.
For now, the only way to get this onto the AT&T version is to unlock the bootloader, load ERE27, then do the update.
If you're running ERE27, have the stock recovery, then the file should work for you.
If you are rooted, have an unlocked bootloader, running a custom recovery, then it will block the file.
Thanks for quick reply.
Are you able to tell me if there is anything wrong with the below steps I took to install 2.2 as its not working.
Idownloaded the zip folder to my desktop.
Changed file name to update.zip
When I copy to SDCard it asks me for a password and then to reconfirm the password
Once entered the file copies over but shows as update.exe
I changed the .exe to .zip and the folder turned into a zip folder.
Power off, reboot, upload of the update.zip folder and the following message comes up.
E;Can't open /cache/recovery/command
--Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Openeing update package...
Verifying update package...
E:Signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
It shouldn't be asking for any passwords when you copy to your sdcard, and it definitely should not be changing it to an .exe file.
How are you copying the file over? Are you just mounting your sd card and drag and dropping it?
Im right clicking it on the desktop, copy and then pasting onto the SD Card which I assume shows as D:
Would you know how to stop my card asking for a password?
Also, the download for froyo has the following folders, is this what you have?
META-INF
patch
recovery
system
error.565
install.565
radio.img
The last 3 files do not have a folder symbol at the side of them, and the file that says error.565 makes me think there was a problem with zip download. I downloaded it a few times and get the same folder contents.
