CM7 IS rooted by default. What makes you think it isn't? You DO get a superuser request that you have to ok before a rooted app will work tho.

To overclock, go to settings... cyanogenmod settings... performance... CPU Settings.

Set max to 1200, check the "set on boot" checkbox, enjoy.

Thanks for the guide colchiro. It worked like a charm. I did #3 to get CM7.1 onto my NC (shipped @ v1.3), just got it today in the mail. I do have a question though. I had bought Rom Manager and installed. It installed v4.8,1.4. When I go to flash clockwork recovery, it tells me I have an "unsupported device". Is it safe to do this (flash the recovery I mean)?

When you flash RM, it should list a bunch of devices of which the Nook Color is the one you want. Did you flash the wrong device?

I uninstalled RM and then reinstalled it. Ran the flash recovery, this time there was a list of devices including the Nook. All seems to be well now. Thanks for responding

Default Dumb question

Thanks so much for the guide! I am in the process of rooting my daughter's nook color and want to make sure I don't make any stupid mistakes. I have downloaded everything as asked but want to make sure of one thing.
Do I unzip the ROM and gapps prior to dragging them to the microSD card? Secondly, do I need to put them in a folder or just in the general directory?
Lastly, my daughter's nook books will be synced from the B&N server as I understand it; what about the apps? No problem on the apps, I was just wondering.
Thanks,
Pat

Don't unzip or put in a folder. Files flashed from recovery need to be a zip file.

B&N market is not the same as Google Market. Paid apps will need to be repurchased if you still need them. The work-around would be to root your rom, back them up with Titanium Backup, install CM7, install Titanium Backup again and restore your apps (just apps + apps data, not green or red items). The roms are not compatible so if you install system items, you'll create problems.

No problem, drag over and that's it; check!

That's no big deal, she has a few games that might even be free on the android market; they like to charge for things that are free elsewhere (which is another reason I rooted). She sees her friends with Fire's getting all these free games and wants a piece of that. I explained to her that the fire is inferior and her's can be rooted
As I understand it, if I download the nook app through the market her books will come back upon signing in; right?
Thanks again,
Pat

Books purchased thru B&N should be available on any device with the B&N app installed. There will be some minor features missing, but they will still be available.

I know the "talking book" thing is unavailable but she's too old for that anyway. I have nook on my ipad and if it looks like that, we're good.

Thanks a lot for your help!

I think the B&N Nook interactive magazine & newspaper subscriptions feature is also missing from the Nook app.

Alright, I was unable to get the 16GB CWM file to flash onto my 16GB card. I tried 1, 2, 8, 16 GB and none would get past the errors. Based on your instructions, I tried TWRP 2 and was able to flash. I have successfully booted into TWRP 2 on the NC but do not know what options to choose (based on the CWM instructions; menu choices are not the same). I cannot seem to find directions for TWRP and don't want to make any mistakes. I know I need to format the nook, but not sure how to do all that.
I used the Download SD card image from their site and did exactly what it said; boots perfectly. I just need to know what to do next.

UPDATE: I got it to work by using the "wipe" function" to get rid of both cache's and the system. It installed and booted to resemble an android tablet (as well as all my daughter's B&N apps for some reason).
Now I am having trouble with an error:
The process android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
Then I am forced to force close. It continues to pop up over and over again. I also can't connect to the market. When I open it, I keep getting the same error. Then it will go to "loading" for awhile and hangs.
Thanks again in advance!
Pat

OK, I got it! I followed the instructions here android.process.media "has stopped unexpectedly - CyanogenMod Forum
My problem was clearing the cache before and not restoring after installing the CM7 and Gapps. I reflashed and then reformatted as the link suggests and it appears I am set.
FWIW in case it helps people, the touch based min-SD card thing is very easy once you know which menus to pick.
Thanks so much,
Pat

You skipped the "format data" part. Makes no difference if you do it before or after flashing.

I don't understand what you mean by this tho: "not restoring after installing the CM7 and Gapps".

Every CM rom is rooted.

Yup, just open settings... cyanogenmod settings... performance... and change the 800 to 1200. Don't change the governor to performance since that just sets your min speed to the fastest and you'll burn thru a battery in hours. Check the "boot" checkbox when you're done.

Yes. I Used the term restore instead of format. I thought it was sufficient to clear the cache and system via the menus and as you said, I forgot to hit the format button after installing gapps and CM7.
It's working perfectly now; just need to get used to the UI of android given that we are used to iOS. This root makes me want to get one of these too.
Thanks,
Pat

Nice. Can I use that ROM app from inside the NC to upgrade to that or do I need to reflash? Is it stable yet?

More info here: [ROM] Unofficial CM9 (ICS) nightly builds

My wife hosed her sdcard so I have her NC to play with for a few weeks while I try to move her old data to the new card. So I might play with it.

Can't tell you how stable or what does/does not work, but you can ask there or read the thread.

If you create a backup in recovery you should be able to save your current config, play with it and decide which you like best. Make sure you format data when installing CM9 or any other different rom. I don't believe Rom Manager has these unofficial nightly builds yet so you'll have to download and flash.

So, as I said I got the first unit up and running great with TWRP. Sadly, when I boot into TWRP on the second unit the touch screen is unresponsive. I rebooted into stock and the touchscreen works. Not sure what is happening or doing wrong; I did the exact same thing I did with the first unit. Any ideas other than trying the button based root?
EDIT: I ended up doing it with the CMW 8GB image; for some reason the 16GB one would fit on my 16GB card.
I may get one of those new $199 tablets for myself just to root!
Thanks,
Pat

I followed the instructions step by step and everything went great. First time using CM7 and love it. I have a doubt with my partitions. I can see my SD Card, Internal Storage (5GB), /mnt/emmc (1GB) and /mnt/usbdisk (Unavailable Size). What is the purpose of those last two partitions? Did I do something wrong when installing? Is there any one of those partitions that can be used or merged with the internal storage? Thanks everyone...

Also, when I connect my NC via USB to my Mac, it only mounts the SD and the emmc, not the Internal Storage which is the largest one. How can I fix this?

Sounds like you haven't mounted your NC via your usb connection. When you do, your computer will see your sdcard. Sorry, the internal storage isn't normally available via usb mode.

You have to pull down the status bar in CM7 to see the option to enable usb mode.

There's a windows program that lets you mount other partitions, but I'm not aware of one for the Mac. You could repartition your Nook to decrease the internal storage to make more room for apps, but that isn't going to help with what you're asking.

Short answer, it sounds like it's working as intended.

Thanks, good to know it is in order. So can I use that partition for files or is that internal storage (5GB) wasted?

If you can copy stuff there, you can use it. I'd use it for stuff that doesn't change much, like media (music/video).

Much (much!) easier to just buy a 16 or 32 gb Sandisk sdcard and use that.

Used option2, but free ROM Manager (not Premium). It worked fine. I did notice that the selecting 7.1 for install, automatically prompted me for Google Apps. This saved having to go through the extra step. No problems with Reboot into Recovery, reformatted as directed, installed without problems. Rebooted without problems. I was presented a configuration screen for Android apps, and there was no way to configure the Wi-Fi. I just filled out the form, and let it time out. I was then prompted to configure Wi-Fi. From there on everything worked fine. The longest task was reinstalling all my apps from the Titanium backup. After two days of heavy use, everything is still working fine. A lot better than stock NC, faster, and love root access without having to noot. Glad I switched to CM7.

I forgot I had the RM method on here. I thought [Guide] Quick'n dirty upgrade your CM7 using Rom Manager was the only one.

CM9 is better at getting you connected to wi-fi before activating. Many people install CM7, connect to wi-fi, then reboot and install gApps for that reason. I'll probably update guide #3 with this, but it doesn't help with the one you did.

I do have a 32 gb sdcard coming so I can play with a bootable instance. I need a little experience with that since it comes up waaaay too much.

I hope he isn't moving apps to the sdcard since that just seems to cause problems. I have noticed that large apps (usually games) want to install to the sdcard. I suspect it's easier to support an app that always installs to the same location.
Thanks for your reply and sorry for my delayed response. I got caught up with other things and forgot about this thread for an extended period of time.

So, when you make your Nandroid backup, which microSD card are you saving it on? Are you saving it on the bootable microSD card with ClockworkMod Recovery flashed to it that is used for emergencies? I guess I am wondering because I did not think your main microSD card would also have ClockworkMod Recovery flashed to it as well. My friend has not needed to move apps to his microSD card yet due to the large internal storage of the B&N Nook Color.

Since the sdcard slot is fragile (and I'm trusting), I just boot into recovery via Rom Manager and create a backup there. I watch to make sure there's no errors, reboot into CM7 and open RM again and rename the rom under "manage backups". My backup would be something like "cm7.1_02-29-2012" (rom_version_date) or "cm7_n170_02-29-2012" for a nightly build. You have to make sure to leave spaces out since that can make your backup unusable. Likewise TIBU also backs up to the sdcard.

You could boot off your recovery sdcard and backup to it, but you'd have to test that it works as expected and that the backup actually is on the card. Each of my backups takes about 1 gb of space so a 2 gb bootable card will probably only hold just one.

I think I see now. So you also have ClockworkMod Recovery flashed to the eMMC and not just on your bootable microSD card.

That is why I was confused as to how you were making Nandroid backups without your ClockworkMod Recovery flashed bootable microSD card. So, that bootable microSD card truly is just for bailing yourself out of a SNAFU, which makes sense, and all other times you are just backing up to your main microSD card using the eMMC flashed ClockworkMod Recovery.

First of all, I don't own a NC any more. I have my wife's to play with for a few weeks and briefly tried the sdcard install, but o/w have no need for it. (Her sdcard died, but she also has a HP Touchpad she can use.)

If you run your rom from a sdcard, rom manager will not work as intended when booting from the card.

I've had times where I've boot-looped with various roms so like to keep the last 5 or so backups, along with some from other roms.

I was going to suggest re-DL'ing it.

Before copying to a sdcard, I always open it in WinRar and click on "test".

I restored back to Nook 1.2 original ROM and then followed the steps to install CM7 update-cm-7.2.0-RC1-encore-signed and gapps. Had no problems at all with the process, it went smooth.

How long should I wait for the sync apps from google to download? I have waited for about 30 minutes and none of them are showing up yet.

THanks

Did you have it set to backup and restore prior to wiping? Did you have cm7 installed before?

If you changed roms or devices, it doesn't always start on it's own.

Otherwise you should still see your last installed/purchased apps if you go into "my apps" (via menu button) and swipe to the left (change from "installed" to "all").

Are these instructions still available for the newest software version 1.4.3?

Hi Colchiro, can I root my nook color? It does not have the microphone on top. I've read the threads but it looks confusing.
Thanks Jeanette

For starts, why not stick with just one topic (you have two now) and read my replies?

Default little lost

Colchiro i found your postings through some google-ing and found you recommended this guide to put CM7 on a NC with 1.4.3
i did option 3 install CM7 via a bootable CWR sdcard using the files in your Quote:

Quote:
Downloading the required files:

As of the time of this post, the latest stable build is 7.2.0, and the latest gApps is 20110828.

but my market does not work and i know its not market anymore its play store so is there newer CM7 or Gapps that i should be using and where would i find them? or an always updated list maybe? and would i just reflash the newer files on just like i did with these?

That's still the latest gApps for CM7. Latest Version/Google Apps - CyanogenMod Wiki

Sounds like you have other issues. Is your date/time correct? Did it ever work? You might need to go into applications, find market/google play store and clear data/uninstall updates and try it again.

What EXACTLY does Market/Playstore say?

CM9 was a dog on the underpowered NC hardware. You might try CM10. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32905547&postcount=1

Default Thanks

Clearing the cache worked

the date was off by a day but i was able to manually set it back

i just recently did this to an unrooted nook color running 1.4.3 so the date and time worked but it wasn't running the software in question

the market place would open, but not load the ads, just the images for the apps and books and such, i could search for apps find them press download then it would say it was downloading the screen would flicker a loading screen then go back to saying it was downloading like normal but the progress bar would not progress no matter how long or what app

but again Clearing the Cache worked in my situation Thanks and ill check out CM10 when i get a chance

I am following http://androidforums.com/nookcolor-all-things-root/327798-how-make-bootable-cwm-recovery-sd-card.html#post2632221 to make my bootable CWR, and section 3 from [Guide] How to install CM7 on your Nook Color

However, after I follow the instructions to create the CMR, the instructions in section 3 of the CM7 guide tell me to copy the files (Rom, gApps) onto the CMR, but the computer doesn't recognize the SD card anymore, so I cannot open it to copy files onto it...

Any advice?

I'd really appreciate some help with option 3.

I keep getting stuck at inserting the SD card into the NC. Everything downloads properly, everything is written properly. My microSD renamed itself BOOT. I don't unzip the gApp or CM7 files, and I updated to the most recent form. However, every time I turn off my NC and insert the sd card, I continue to get the normal Nook boot screen. The reader recognizes the sd, and will show me all the things I downloaded in the files, but it won't go into recovery mode. I've gone through this step by step with youtube tutorials, rooting forums, and other step by step lists that essentially all say the same thing as this thread, but my NC will not recognize CM7.

I feel like I have to be missing something huge and obvious, since everyone comments on how easy the process is. I've been going at this for about a week now, with the same results.

Did you rule out the possibility that you own a Nook Tablet instead of a Nook Color?

The Nook Tablet has a pinhole microphone near the headphone jack, which the Nook Color doesn't:

If you have that hole, you're in the wrong forum, using the wrong guide and wrong files.

Default Trying to install CM 7 on nook color via method #2

and I cannot get past the step of rebooting into recovery. I flashed CWM using the RM manager and downloaded CM7. When I reboot into recovery I get messages that the stock BN OS is detected and the SD card is already formatted, and it shuts down. What am I missing?

Thanks,
Helene
