Hi, I'm having the same problem. I got a nook color (1.4.3) with a 32 gb micro sdhc card.
I tried to follow a lot of steps provided on the net and even the links provided in here.
But somehow, nothing happens. It just loads back to the original nook interface all the time. (I'm a noob to rooting and stuffs, and I would really appreciate english. lol )
btw, will the steps provided on the links above work on 1.4.3?
It says 1.4.1 or 1.4.2
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I assume you mean rooting the stock rom. I believe it's still the same, but you'd have to ask the person who created the guide, or follow the link to XDA. I'm not a B&N software fan and don't read books so have little experience with that.
And yeah I got a nook color. I also have read the post about you confirming if it got a small microphone hole even before I joined this site and posted here. lol
Like him, I tried to make a bootable SD card following these steps:
First this but some downloads links are missing.
Then this but the nook totally ignores the card and loads that way it did before.
Ok bud i really need ur help if u still follow this thread. I took on the project of rooting my friends nook color. Its running 1.4.3. Im trying to root and and get market access, but keep the B&N stuff. Ive seen videos of it being done and u urself said it to be possible. However i have tried so many ways including urs with no luck. Any help would really be appreciated. I cant seem to get this thing to read my bootable sdcard. Tried numerous files for CWM including urs still with no luck. Using Win32 to image file.
EDIT: Got a sdcard to boot to clockwork...finally. Now what file to flash to get android stuff?

If you're keeping the stock rom, but adding root and market, then this is what you want, but I think you'd have to reflash your card: How I rooted B&N 1.4.1 and got the Android Market to work Sorry, I won't be much help with that tho. That thread links to another one where they should also address how to update 1.4.3.
Thank u for ur response. But yes it is very important to her that she keep the B&N stuff as it was. I think it very cool that both that and android can run on this kinda weak tab IMO. Ill try the thread u linked. THANX!
thats just it. she has plenty of books on here already. Havent seen a away to save or back them up. Plus, if i could back them up somehow, would other readers be able to read them? Just really like the B&N home button and android button.

Books you purchased from B&N are available from any device with the B&N app installed. So if you wiped this device and installed CM7 and the B&N app, the books would download again.
If you wanted to install Amazon's app or Google's app, their books would be available. I'm not a reader so wrong person to ask but these apps probably just open their own books. There are other readers that can open generic book files tho.

One nice thing about rooting (instead of flashing cm7) is that you can create a recovery backup, flash cm7 and restore the backup if you don't like cm7.
BTW, Mirage, a custom version of cm7, is very nice and is themed to look more like ICS roms.
Captain we have android boot screen!! lol booting now! SUCCESS!!!!
THANKS BUDDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So Im guessing I can reformat SDcard now so she can use it. It will stay like this until I change it via sdcard boot right? these settings will stick through reboots?
Had this problem when I rooted a pandigital nova for another friend. market only shows like 4 apps. Has to be a way to get full list right? Checking some threads now.

Weird that it took flashing nooter twice to get full market. I just cleared cache and dalvik and re-flashed nooter. AWESOME!!. lol As for the SDcard. she didnt even have one in before so Im assuming it would be ok to reformat this 16G card, after I back it up of course, and just let her use it. It was mine..lol I bought a 2G card for her but no matter what i did i couldnt get it to fit on it.( The boot image i mean) :-)

replace your stock rom with CM7 (convert from a reader to a tablet) or
create a bootable sdcard with a rom on it (slower, more fragile, but can boot either cm7 or stock B&N) or
root the stock rom (reader still retaining B&N software that can also install other apps)?
You have to know which direction to take b/c they are all different.
Is your card new or old? What size and brand?
Were you able to see files on it after flashing? Were you able to copy files to it?
please help me i have a NC 1.4.3 version and ive been trying to jailbreak it for a long time. i like option 1 so if yo can help me please show me how to do this.
Sdcards fail and it's easy to screw up a rom on the sdcard since there's features it doesn't support.
Rooting is harder and a future B&N update will screw that up so don't recommend rooting the stock rom. Besides you said you wanted a tablet.
So, #1 is best for you.
Probably a stupic question, but from what you said, it looks like option #3 would be the method that I would choose, however, am I understanding correctly that future B&N updates would wipe that out?
I have an n2a card, but have grown tired of switching back and forth. I really like the stock nook interface for reading, but also like the kindle app (have lots of free kindle books), and n2a is slow and freezing up more and more often. Looking for a way to keep the nook interface and gain more apps, etc.

If you have to have the stock B&N reader (Android version isn't good enough), then I'd root it. How I rooted B&N 1.4.1 and got the Android Market to work, but I won't be able to help you much with that. I don't even have a NC here.
O/W the "option 3" replaces stock B&N with CM7, like your N2a card, where future B&N updates can't happen.

here's a somewhat blurry photo that proves i did get it to work. 1) which of these files allow me access to "settings" - and it's not the "settings" button. that just takes me to the b&n settings.
i did something wrong, and when i hit the home button, i just go to the b&n screen. at that point, i can't go anywhere. i have to power off/on. i'd like my home button to access the android shit.
2) i'm getting a lot of "device not compatible" messages from the play store. any suggestions?

You're not giving much to work with...
Stock rom? What version of software? When did you root it (now)?
Have you changed the dpi on it or is it stock? (160 dpi is the best to use, otherwise 120 and 200 also work). If you haven't changed it and this is a stock rom, then it might be a limitation of the stock rom.
The Following User Says Thank You to colchiro For This Useful Post:
dude, you just said about 14 things that i don't understand.
i put clockwork 3.2.0.1 and manual nooter 5.08.20 on an sd card yesterday, and rebooted the device.
i'm not a dummy, i'm just a rookie at this kind of stuff. it was something that's been in a box at the top of my wife's closet for over a year. i happened across an article about rooting the Nook, and just did it.
it's kind of slow, but i was just looking at getting some pretty basic stuff added on. got hbo go, netflix, and crackle on there - so that's something.

Ok, if you used manual nooter, then you have the stock B&N rom. Then it just depends on what version of B&N you have.
If you didn't change the dpi, then it's stock. If you don't need a reader, and are looking more for a 7" tablet, I think your best bet would be to wipe it and install CM7 on it. Do you read books using the B&N app?
i'm clearly in over my head here. will wiping it and installing cm7 make it a little faster? i've seen that pre-formatted sd card for sale, but that really wouldn't be an advantage over what i've already done, would it?

Replacing the stock rom with CM7 would be fastest, but it's still older hardware. If you want fast, get the Nexus 7 tablet for $199-249. I have one and love it.
Buying a pre-formatted card would be a bit slower than replacing the stock rom, but would eventually fail and cause problems. (All roms installed on sdcards fail after 1-2 years.)
If you don't use any of the B&N features listed at the top of the "How I rooted..." page, don't bother with the B&N firmware. Once your device is out of warranty, keeping B&N's firmware gains you nothing if you don't use those features, and it has some annoying things you have to work around. Definitely put CM on internal eMMC and get on with it.
If you like playing with these things, there's no need to be timid with a NC. The things are nearly impossible to kill in software. Just keep a recovery uSD card around and you'll be fine.
I have read through this thread and its links quite ferociously, and decided to try the route the other fellow went with his Nook Color (1.4.3). There is of course the possibility I made some sort of error, however it seems that the model BNTV250A might not allow boots off microSD cards, as it did not work for me and I have seen similar issues with this particular model on various forums. I tried formatting the 32gb class 4 Sandisk after to start from scratch, and now it can't be detected by any device. You can probably tell that I am new to this. At this point, I am rather desperate for a solution and I would really appreciate your input on this. Have you heard/read anything about this particular model (BNTV250A) that would give me an issue?
omfg i didn't even look at the box when my cousin just gave it to me!!! he told me it was the color... i feel so incredibly amazingly stupid. thanks for taking my head out of my ass for me! i hope you didn't soil your hands while doing so
