If it's stock, you could ask B&N to check it out. If it's going to cost you money, then you might need to flash back to stock, which requires creating bootable sdcard and formatting data, which means you lose your books/apps and settings (but books/apps can be redownloaded).
Plan "B" would be to create the bootable sdcard and format cache, clear Dalvik cache, fix permissions and see if it fixes it.
Meanwhile, holding down the power and "n" buttons should power it off.
