Houston, we have S-off!!!!

I just logged on to post this Scotty, and you beat me to the punch.

It's been confirmed working on the Sprint variant as well.

I knew it! S-off loaded and ready the instant my M8 is delivered.

I saw you've been busy over at XDA.

Post when you're ready, no rush my friend.

Bootloader "Tampered" status removal "Unlocked" and "Locked" flag toggling. Plus, removal of the Red developer text on the splash screen will be available really soon with S-off found.

/System write protection will no doubt be properly removed now too. Man am I excited to get this phone!!

I almost pulled the trigger today from VZW on the easy pay plan. Could have had it Wednesday. Don't know why I'm waiting except to do a bit more learning and give it one more day for an official CWMRecovery, lol.

The phone is awesome out of the box so can't imagine what new fun will come from full root. Teddy...worth the move. I came from the Galaxy Nexus and enjoyed it all the through 442. This is light years from that. Even Sense 6 is pretty good. Camera criticisms are overblown. Enjoy....

Rooted/s-off. Be sure do do your prep work. Download SDK & JRE and make sure they're working before you try to root. It's well worth the effort. BTW - the new update is already in the wild for those of us s-off thanks to Captain_Throwback

Update hitting today or tomorrow! 1.54 - Page 7 - xda-developers

Just stopping by to say I'm officially S-Off. Feels good. Those 26 hours of no root and s-off were pretty uncomfortable! I'm looking forward to seeing the awesome development that will continue coming for this phone.

Next step is to donate to the geniuses that make this all possible.

Awesome sauce!!!

I'd welcome you to the side of truth and justice (since EM isn't here yet ) but I'm still S-on and unrooted.

Got mine late yesterday, and had too much to do. Hopefully I can find time to get this done today.

This thing is super fast now, it's gonna be insane once I get some baked good on here!

Curious, I did two backups on stock. One with each custom recovery (TWRP and CWM). In TWRP, i selected compression and the backup is 654Mb, where in CWM uncompressed is 4.7gb. Can compression do that much or do we think there is something hinky with the backup?

While I cannot reply from experience, from what I'm reading the TWRP recovery compression works fine. Restores fine as well. Especially the new one built from source. The thread I linked above has now been depreciated with a link to the latest.

Thanks Teddyearp, that was a good call on your part. The TWRP img download is labeled verizon_src.img so it wasn't exactly clear it was the TWRP img ... just went for it and flashed fine. Also, it fixed the write to ext_sd card so this is going to be my custom recovery for the near term. Good stuff.

Also noticed that 1.54 was out for the Sprint version, don't know what that means for the VZW crowd. Some mixed reviews, but it adds the extreme battery save mode. That could be useful down the line.

Yes, it seems as though they have got the >32 gig sdcard issue fixed. And frankly, it could be named anything, just as long as it really is a recovery that you're flashing.

Rooted and S-off achieved!!

5 days without root, I feel a lot better now.

I'll tell you what, ADB can be a pain in the arse. I kept getting the dreaded "more than one device and emulator" error. Completely forgot about "adb kill-server" which got me rolling again. That and device not found. I just kept pulling the usb cable out and plugging it back in to get the commands entered through ADB. Once it went through, the bottles were chugged. I haz S-off.

Viper is running nicely btw.

firewater went really fast, compared to rumrunner and moonshine. it was over before i even knew it,lol... chugged i think 3 bottles, then just "device is s off!" i looked at it,and thot "really?allready?" boot to bootloader and it was not lieing!

what OS do you use for adb? i still do some very basic stuff on windows, but for most things i use an older laptop on wich i installed ubuntu 12.04. since i got adb and fastboot working, ive had zero issues with it.

ive now done jpbear, moonshine, rumrunner and firewater and these tools seem to work soooo much better on linux.

All low level stuff, including adb and fastboot, works faster and smoother from Linux and Mac OS X (both of which are UNIX variants) than through Windows.

Windows has a whole layer of drivers and management layers for those drivers when hooking up anything to a hardware port. The headaches of getting usb drivers to work with various phone models and different versions of Windows (and sometimes even different Windows hardware) are legendary.

With any flavor of Unix, the user is expected to be smart enough to do the right things with the right hookups (example - you don't get your hand held, the idea is that you won't try to print a web page to your bootloader so no extra management software is required) and attachments from hardware to software are simple.

A lot of Windows users have no trouble and that's fine but it's not an opinion that the signal path from your user interface to the phone firmware is just far simpler with Unix.

For those interested, several of us can provide a primer on how to boot Linux temporarily from a cd you can make to work on s-off if you're having trouble with your Windows for that. (But count me out for the next day or two, sorry. After that, no problem.) You might even enjoy a virtual machine for that.

Congrats on arriving on the side of truth and justice with your new M8, Scotty!

Absolute truth there EM.

I didn't boot into Ubuntu because I need to know how the Windows method will work. Most folks will go that route.

I now have a better understanding of the driver issues and complexities with Windows.

The big thing really was to keep the screen on. Once the screen timed out on the phone the connection was lost. I should have selected to keep the screen on in developer settings.

Also, welcome to the dark side Scotty!

Ahhh very good call mister granite! Right you are, most folks will want to go windows route. I've kind of given up as folks move up to win 8/8.1 since I don't have that,I can't help them anyway you have gained some valuable insight on the process

My machines are still on Windows 7, so it's bearable. I hear Windows 8 is a heck of a lot worse.

Ultimately, EM is right. Load up a Live CD, or Dual Boot and it eliminates a whole pile o' gibberish.

Open a terminal session in Ubuntu, issue commands, profit! No messin around.

Windows 8 - either install Classic Shell for semi-permanent Win7 behavior (works great) or switch to desktop mode.

As always, drivers will be the real issue.

To run a DOS window as admin, all later versions of Windows -

Hmm and just when I thought switching to an Ubuntu box would solve all my problems:

I should never have uninstalled the SDK. It's taking FOREVER to download...

Anyone have a good source for HTC Drivers?

There are links for drivers and a "mini adb" file in the m8 root thread if you still need them. you don't really need the full SDK just to htcdev unlock.

I got caught reading all the procedures till about 4am, then I started tinkering with the all-in-one utility to get unlock, and then went to bed angry and unfulfilled LOL.

Anyhoo, in a nutshell, I need to:

Unlock Bootloader (think I will do this manually)
Get temproot (do I?)
Run Firewater
Pop champagne?

Is this correct?

almost

if you have a variant that you can htcdev unlock then you dont need temp root. so:
-unlock bootloader
-temporarily or permantly install recovery(more info in The HTC One M8 Root Thread)
-use recovery to install superuser
-run firewater
-pop champagne!

Downloaded Firewater, but am stumped at the second command:

adb wait-for-device push firewater /data/local/tmp

I get "cannot 'stat' firewater: no such file or directory."

Does the Firewater dl need to be in a specific file?

Now stuck in the last line... I really need to re-prime myself on adb commands:

chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/firewater
/data/local/tmp/firewater

One line? Two?

ETA: continually get "bad mode."

whelp, this sucks, firewater can not work on your device
no amount of reflashing, retrying, or ruuing will fix...
DO NOT COME TO IRC ASKING FOR UPDATES OR ETAS!!!!!!
if we are able to fix this issue, it will be announced
bye bye.....sorry it didn't work out.

hmm... what variant do you have? what is your build number?

did you meet all the prerequesites? no lock screen, working data connection, etc? have the phone awake so you could grant any superuser requests?

ill have to dig around and see if there have been updates on some devices that have broken the exploit

in the mean time, might want to consider trying it on linux, its pretty easy to make a bootable ubuntu cd. failing that, hopefully granite will be along and have some pointers on making it work on windows.

Seems like some hardware simply doesn't take; I have Sprint Build 1.54.651.

Thanks for the help...

Per data connection, I have not yet activated the phone, but wi-fi is live. I don't think that should have anything to do with it, no?

Wifi will work, mine was on Wifi when I did it.

Did you flash recovery, AND flash a rooted ROM?

A rooted rom is needed for Firewater to work.

Make sure you go under Settings / Developer Options / Select "Stay Awake", and USB Debugging.

Make sure when you issue the first command "adb reboot" Don't wait for the phone to boot to issue the second command, just run it.

"chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/firewater/data/local/tmp/firewater" This command needs to be entered just like this.

Honestly, I would run this again. Maybe try and load up a Live CD of Ubuntu to see if drivers are the culprit. Lastly, I don't think the device needs to be activated, but I'm not 100% on that. I believe the current S-off method involves the Qualcomm radio software/hardware, so there's a chance it needs to be activated to work.

Crap, what is going on!!

When you get ADB working can you type in "adb devices" and see if it will list your device serial #?

Maybe ADB isn't working right.

ADB does work; I do get serial number, and device responds to all sort of commands.
