Make sure you followed every steps, partitioned the SD correctly... Also, try to re-install Apps2SD... BTW, if you aren't concerned about your warranty then consider upgrading to CyanogenMod 7... It's been a long time & I forgot a lot of things about Apps2SD...

Rooting gives you the right to modify the OS... You should see "Superuser" in your App Drawer...

As you are rooted, now you can uninstall bloatwares[with Titanium Backup(Must use with caution & don't remove System apps)], modify the OS(Changing the font/Boot Animation etc), install ROMs & also some apps need root access...

I also installed busybox but its the same with that. all I'm looking to do is access the hardware of the phone such as the cpu/gpu etc

Do you mean Overclocking?!

If you want to overclock your phone, you need to flash a custom ROM which is overclockable; like Quarx Black 2.1, OpenSwift(2.2/CyanogenMod 6.1), SwiftDroid(2.3/CyanogenMod 7) etc...

Now, As you don't wanna get you in trouble with me I recommend you Install SwiftDroid, as OpenSwift has known bugs & won't get further fixes & Quarx Black 2.1 is 2.1 lolz

After Installation, Go to Settings>CyanogenMod Settings>Performance>CPU Settings>Max CPU frequency & Set your desired one(NEVER EVER go over 845MHz & to be safe and not getting you in trouble with me overclock upto 806MHz) |OR| Open SetCPU(if it ain't there, Install from Market) & overclock from there... And, you can't over clock the GPU...

i tryed this one
"
- Turn on the device and click the icon to open the phone dialler
- Enter the code '3845#*540#'
- Select the option 'Module Test', then 'Stability Test' then 'Enable Root Permission'
- You will now be prompted for a password - enter :SWIFT::GT540:
- A toast message will briefly appear saying 'OK' - your root access is now enabled!
- Reboot your device, and now when you connect via ADB, you'll see you have a root prompt (#). " but there was no enable root thing and i tryed following this one several times but always fails when i boot up titanium backup it says failed to get root access help!!1 thanks

Try Universal Androot... The method nightsaber mentioned is only for 1.6(Non-CPW)...

You bought your phone from Carphone Warehouse, right?! Consider updating to 2.1 & then try z4root...

It will take a little time while obtaining root access & then your device should restart automatically

Default successfully rooted, but can't remove apps

Hi guys,

Just finding my way around rooting and all that stuff... hope someone can help. I have succeeded in rooting my GT540 (running 2.1) and I have installed Titanium Backup. Titanium is supposed to be able to remove that annoying Sims demo and the other crapware my provider (Orange) has installed, but it doesn't seem to work. According to the popup on Titanium, the phone should reboot twice and then the app should be gone, but what actually happens is it only reboots once.

Does anyone know what is going wrong? I don't really want to use app2sd and could really use freeing up that space.

thanks in advance

Try other apps, like Uninstaller for Root

To unlock, your husband has to ask Orange... They will give the instructions

Which one is it?! This one:

Or this one:

2nd one is the latest... If it's the first one, Open Market & keep it like that for sometime, it should update itself...

Please forgive the noobishness of this question but can someone explain the process of upgrading from android 1.6 to 2.1 in south africa the update has not been made available so i cant just run the normal update method, i am guessing i need to get hold of the 2.1 "install" file and run it myself to get 2.1

Finally worked. After ages however :-(. Had to download superuser, busybox all apart, however Z4root said it came together. It didn't. Titanium backup needed several times of starting untill after about 10 times it finally acknowlegde the phone was rooted. I don't know WHAT I did differently but suddenly everything worked. However it was a learning process for me...I understand a lot about rooting now after reading and surching the web...Now I am backing up everything. Next thing I'll try is apps2sd and partitioning my sd card. Having a 2 gb sd card I think it soon will be not enough to store everything... this was one hell of a job for me, though my persistance didn't fail me ;-)

Hi everybody !
I downloaded Z4root 1.1 from Megaupload, enabled Debug, Unknown Sources and Fictive Positions (well, probably not the real names of options, I'm French, I translated, I think you'll see what I mean) ; I installed Z4root, but when clicking on Root, the app stayed on the blue 'trying to apply root' screen...
I reboot the phone, try again unsuccessfully, donwload the .apk gived in this forum, try to install through my File Manager. The setup asks me if I want to replace the old Z4root, I click 'OK', install starts... then crashes ("L'application n'a pas été installée", app didn't install).
Could someone tell me how to fix that ?
Using GT540 under 2.1

This forum is for helping each other, never hesitate to ask!

There is a way to install 2.1 but the first question is, Do you need any specific languages!?!

Also, Just to notify you, Android 2.3.4 & 2.2 is also available but they are unofficial & will void the warranty... If you wish to update, we will try to help..

It will unroot after the update, so update to 2.1 first then root your device...

Same here, iI might that batch file a go, but I don't really want to make another account.

Romii, could you upload it to this site so I don't have to make another account? Thanks.

I have an Lg optimus gt540, running on 2.1 i want to root it and i have tried alot of different ways from one click roots to the code thing on the dialer, z4root starts to root then shuts off and i cant select it again, super one click does not go past running pseunet and i dont have an enable root access on my hidden menu, i bought the phone from argos any ideas on how i can do it, i've never rooted before but i dont think i have done anything different to what the forums and 'how to' guides are saying :S, also i cannot start the phone in recovery because apparently these phones do not come with it installed i have to install a custom rom with the fast boot on that.
also universal androot does not work either

How can you tell if the rooting was successful? I did not get an automatic restart.

Nothing seems to be working for me to root my GT540 - I've tried this method ( I unchecked and rechecked unknown, usb debugging, mock locations, reset, re checked . tried this multiple times. Zroot just closes and nothing happens and no apps have access to the root level.

This is my version info:

firmware version: 2.1-update1
Kernel version 2.6.29 lg-electronics@si-rd10-ubld01 #1

I tried the batch file method from post mentioned above. It just locks up my phone for 15 minutes and i'm forced to do a battery pull . Not sure what gives

I also could not get Zroot to work and the batch lock up my phone as well, I then turned the phone back on with the usb cable connected and tried again and it worked so I guess just try again.

Ok my phone is already rooted but now I want to install apps to my sd card, so Im tryin "1click app2sd" but the instructions for that app stop at how to prepare your sd card in windows the batch file included in that has many options and I have no way to know what one I'm suppose to pick and after that I have no way of knowing how to use the dammed thing.

Seeing as you are rooted now, I would download an app called root explorer, which will give you full access to the flash memory. Then download a boot animation from hereBoot Animations to your sd card, then in root explorer navigate to your sd card, long press bootanimation.zip and hit copy.

After that in root explorer go to /system/media on the top right hit the button that says mount R/W then if there is a bootanimation.zip rename it to oldbootanimation.zip paste the new boot animation and reboot.

If it shows the new boot animation your problem will be with the old/stock boot animation if it still shows nothing it could be a slightly corrupt OS.

Question Upgraded to 2.1 but still not able to root...

Hello ladies and gentlemen! (I don't want to leave anyone out)

Just recently purchased this phone with 1.6 and upgraded it to 2.1. I am still not able to root.

Phone stats: 2.1 update 1, 2.6.29 Kernel, GT540 V20C Feb 22 2011 software.

Here is what I have tried.

1. Downloaded z4root and opened with file manager then chose permanent root. It says "running exploit in order to obtain root access" with a blue ocean screen then "creating shell." After this it goes to a white screen, completely white. I let it sit for about 20 minutes but still nothing. The phone is not hooked up to the computer. I take out the battery and try again with the same result. Sometimes changing the USB debugging and mock location options. Suggestions?

2. As Romii suggested earlier, I opened rootgt540.zip, while hooked up to my computer. It seemed to run it's script in a programming box after I clicked "root." After this nothing happened and I re-booted my phone. Suggestions?

TIA

Anyone?

I tried option 1 above a few times more to install z4root and now after the "creating shell" it goes back to the program page. I re-start the phone after a few minutes but it's still not rooted.

I've found that checking the option to allow installation of unknown sources usually works, as well as restarting after any changes.

I've tried that, and it makes no difference, running Z4root fails each time , it sits there acquiring a root shell then drops out.
I think somewhere I saw busybox is needed for Z4root, but busybox installer wont install without root access.
Superuser complains su is out of date , and puts su-2.3.1 on the SDcard as a zip file !.

Would't be nice if you could boot the damn thing up straight into a terminal with root access the same as running linux, init 1.

Ideas ???

TIA

Hello, I am new to this board.

I've been trying to root my gt540 running 2.1 but was unsuccessful. It was VERY VERY VERY frustrating 3 days and nights...
I tried EVERYTHING hundreds of times that was listed in this thread but nothing worked....

HOWEVER, I FINALLY GOT ROOTED!!!!!!!!!! YAH!!!!!!!!!!
Root Check confirmed my success.

Below is for those of you who are interested in how I did it.

1. I used rootgt540.zip method above. I downloaded rootgt540.zip and unzipped it to my hard drive. It created "rootgt540" folder. (IMPORTANT: I had to turn off my McAfee Real-Time virus scan. It kept deleting a file and gave me a warning a trojan has been removed.)

2. YOU MUST INSTALL SUPERUSER.APK from the Market. (It didn't work the first time I tried it because I didn't have this app installed).

3. Run cmd. (for XP, go to Start, click RUN, type cmd) Go to "rootgt540" folder and type "root" (without " ")

4. Wait till GT540 reboots and you are rooted!!!
(You have to reconfigure your WiFi once you are rooted. That's what I had to do...)

I wanted to post a screen shot of cmd but I don't have enough privileges to post the image. Sorry...

But it is very simple process and I am sure you can figure it out. Just remember to install superuser.apk first.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH romii FOR POSTING rootgt540.zip and thank everyone who posted.
Oh, man! I feel like my aching teeth had been pulled off finally!

In linux (android is a form of linux) root permissions give complete access to the os, this allows you to do absolutly anything, from using a wifi teather to deleting all files in flash to install a new ROM, there is 0 chance of bricking your phone when you root it, however the things you do after you root it could brick it.

In android there is a well known exploit that can give you root permissions, once this is run you will have complete access to all files in flash memory, which will allow you to do anything. If you choose to install a custom ROM, you will need to root your phone first.
