This line does not work the same. If you're being told flash_image doesn't exist, something's not right . Make sure you extracted flash_image and placed the file on the SD Card. Some people misunderstand and place the flash_image.zip file there as is.

I was hitting a lot of road blocks along the way of using this method. I messaged Joneidy and helped troubleshoot. I figured I would post the messages to help anyone else who had any of the problems I did.

(me
Hey, I was going to post in the thread but didn't want to clutter it up.

My phone is rooted from gingerbreak [2.2.1]
extracted the custom recovery directly to the SD card.
Using Terminal Emulator I started following the steps, but there is no response from any of the commands except SU.
Any ideas what could be wrong?

(jon
After you type su do you get the # sign?
If you do then make sure that the files are unzipped to the root of the sdcard.
Hope this helps

(me
Yeah I got # and the [Root Access Granted] toast message. I rebooted, tried again and got the "not enough space on phone" error.
(edit: this was actually the "mtd: not writing bad block at 0X0000000000" error message)
I'm installing the SDK now to trying using that method.
Should I be getting a response after each command?
Right now I get one on the last command claiming there isn't space on the phone, or the 'directory does not exist" a few commands before.

(jon
You are supposed to get the same output as what you typed. And about the one that says no space, its because the virtual memory is actually full. So just try it using cmd and adb. That way it should work with no problems.
If any other question dont hesitate on pm me. Lol

(me
lol hey Sorry to bombard your inbox but I made some progress but hit the same "not enough space on device" error.
Image - TinyPic - Free Image Hosting, Photo Sharing & Video Hosting

(jon
This is how it went, rebooting now.
If there actually is a memory problem, is there a way to clean up the memory?
Ok so could you try this. Type all the commands and when you get to the flash_image command replace my recovery file with the one in this link
recovery-RA-optm-2.2.1-GNM.img

Another thanks for all the help.

Make a new folder and name it android images or whatever you want. Put the zip in that folder and you will be able to navigate to it in recovery.

Edit for clarity. Make the new folder on your SD card

Make sure you're typing the first line that changes permissions,
Code:
# mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock5 /system
Otherwise you'll get permission denied.

You mean to install recovery? If that's what you mean, then yes. Absolutely. If you don't have a USB cable right now that'll let you do that, a) how have you lived without one???? lol and b) go here to get them for so cheap you'll wonder how they do it: USB Cables

No you don't need a USB cable to install recovery. You can do so using Terminal Emulator an app from the market. Here is a great How-To guide on how to do that

I stand corrected.

I thought about Terminal Emulator, but it's been so long since I installed recovery that I just figured you had to do it the way I did lol. Whoops.

two issues: 1) when I go into recovery I get E: boot message error 2) I can no longer recover or back up from inside recovery. It tells me to run the commands in ADB.

Any insight is appreciated.

You mean that thing right above that says "E:Bad boot message"? Don't worry about it. Everyone gets that and it's some sorta bull, because it doesn't stop us from using it.

As to being told to run it from ADB, is it something like "Run nandroid-mobile.sh via ADB!"...? I'll ask you what kind of nand backup you're trying to run. I get that problem if I try to run a nand + SD-EXT backup, but if I run just a regular nand backup, it's fine. For some reason I can't get Recovery to ever properly see my sd-ext partition in terms of doing anything with it, although it can create and upgrade the partition just fine. So, well, I don't really like that, but I dunno what to do about it. Joneidy? heh...

I can't recall the exact commands, but they were similar to what you posted.
I flashed Joneidy's Sense Rom, backed it up and then did a trial restore without any problems. I was using cm7 but it was to buggy. Maybe that was my issue.
What are the differences in the backup options?

Regular nand backup takes an image of the phone itself. Nand + sd-ext takes an image of the phone and the a2sd partition. Nand + android.secure is similar, but instead of the a2sd partition, it takes an image of the android.secure folder on your sd card, which is what froyo natively uses for it's apps2sd. A combo of all 3 is self-explanatory.

Okay. I don't have my SD card partitioned so I just backed up nand only and that seemed to have worked. Hopefully.
Thanks for the clarity.

Just to let you know there is a official recovery that does not have the bad boot message and allows the nand back up of the ext partition.

I had lost track of that thread, but I didn't know that it really works for sd-ext--hadn't taken a very close look at it. The bad boot message I don't care about, but sd-ext? really? COOL. Joneidy, your recovery has served me well, but......I gotta try this one and if it works better, I gotta switch. I will miss your sweet background image though. Thx for the re-link new optimus!

as always joneidy, you find a way to amaze me. I love the guide for rooting an lg optimus m, and the rom here is pretty nice. Works smoothly, but when i unlock my phone from the lock screen, some clouds appear? .... just thought i would point it out. i love what you did with the rom, the menu appearances, the home screen button (double click to view all) etc. All i would love in this is a way to change the ringtone for a message, and a way to always see my dock bar (minimzed at the bottom when i open an app or something) so i can just quickly click it, go to something else without having to close it, and open it again. But over all 4/5. Great job!

The clouds appear? Is it raining inside your phone? Jk jk That's supposed to happen cuz its cloudy outside to some degree. It's a feature of the Weather & Toggle widget. When it's sunny outside, you'll see a little shiny yellow sun show up too in the upper right area. If you like how the home button works, cool. You can change it also if you please. Menu> more > adw settings > gestures> home button binding. As for wanting the dock bar to never go away, i haven't seen that in any particular rom out there, much less a home launcher like adw. But my exposure is pretty limited. Lastly, I know you were talking to joneidy, but I had to jump in after the bit about the clouds

well i mean its pretty sweet that its raining IN my phone lol, and like when you open an application, it should let you keep the dock bar, if atleast minimized so you can just click it, and it pops open like a pop up. now THAT would be pretty sweet. And you know the player pro that comes with the rom? well, i downloaded a few songs from 4shared app. when i open the music player, it says 'player can not play this kind of file' or whatever. and then, i got think free office, and i find it there, i click to open it and it does play it. wtf? or am i just going nuts here xD

Well since this has now become a discussion and questions specifically just about the sense rom, it's best to talk about it in the thread for that rom. i would go ahead and repost this over there in the sense rom thread, unless a moderator beats you to it and moves the post for you (hey mods! talkin to YOU! lol). The dock bar doesn't do that that I've ever seen on any android setup. You're talking about making the homescreen application having an even farther reach through the system than it already does. But to get you close, from the homescreen, hold down the home button, and a "recent" screen will come up with last few to several apps you've been in. you can also do a long press on any app in your app drawer, and then it'll go back to the homescreen, where you can move that icon around and put it on any of the homescreens you want it on for quick access. It'll still be in your app drawer, but you've just created a shortcut for it. So I've described two methods from which you can do what you want I'd say just as quickly, just with a different method than what you describe. This way as it's designed, it also serves to preserve screen real estate (room on the screen) to be used by whatever app you're in. and from any app unless they've written it poorly (imho), you can either access the notifications bar, or the menu button to temporarily go elsewhere. As to the player pro issues, I dunno, haven't experienced that. Moderators, please move this post and the last couple between me and Outrider to the Sense ROM thread, where people can help him in proper context, since he's asking questions about it, and not Joneidy's recovery.

Before I go ahead and do this -

will terminal on osx do just as well as cmd on windows?
I can't imagine a difference, but the irony of bricking a phone (potential)
while flashing a recovery is too much to bear.

I've got gingerbreak (thank you to developers, excellent job) and I have terminal shell (w/e its called) on my phone - but to do this, following joneidy's instructions, I should (turn off storage only) and connected via usb (w/ debug activated) then commence entering these commands (once I have the flash recovery files already moved to my sd card via sdmove?) - ?

a point in the right direction, some help would be really appraciated

Do you have ADB installed on your computer?

EDIT: ADB is part of the whole Android SDK. In either case, do you have it?

Default sdk on osx

@teh_dude

I did download it yesterday for osx,
but it is just sitting in an unzipped folder with several
sub-folders (add-ons, platforms, sdk read-me doc, tools).
I'm not sure what programs I'm supposed to use, or where to put this, on my phone? in my applications folder? - so, I believe I have it, but what to do with it, that's where I'm stuck now.

Aw carpnuggets. thanks @new optimus - but I bet there's got to be a way around that. one thing that comes to mind is a way to convert .exe to a format accessible by mac's osx, if I can't get that to run. but I'm not sure that is the problem in the first place. frankly, I've put this off until I feel I have more patience. I have papers to write that take precedence, as much as I like learning about this, I need to take care of what I need to take care of. I'll be checking here at least once a day to see if there are any developments that might snap into place my understanding. Its not good to give up too easily, right?

You just need to install the Android SDK for Mac then you can use adb:
Android SDK | Android Developers

Edit: just read your previous post and realized you already have it, open a terminal and navigate to the tools folder then you can run adb commands.

Alright, I have done everything on the list, but when I go to recovery through anreboot, or through the cmd command, it goes to the black screen with a loading bar, then reboots, all it does is erase the info I have on it.

I was able to flash this with the terminal emulator just fine.

One issue though. I backed up the stock rooted rom before flashing CM 7.1 custom rom for LG optimus M

Flashed perfectly, but contacts did not sync back with google.

I tried to nand restore and get the following error

"instal nandroid-restore.sh recovery though ADB"

Tried via terminal but dont know the correct command.

Any advice would be appreciated

Just use flash image GUI. Alot easier. Go to sdx developers website register. Go to apps and games look for flash image GUI. Put flash_image in root as well as the recovery.img ur wanting to use. Then open flash image GUI. Browse for the recovery.img ur wanting to put on ur phone. And Congrats u have ur new custom recovery.

they had a very slight hardware change from the first 2.2 phones to the phones that came stock with 2.2.1

Any one, myself included, that tried to downgrade to 2.2 had only a black screen when we booted up. And that included trying to use a 2.2 recovery.
We could put the 2.2 recovery on but it would never boot into recovery.

recovery doesnt depend on os platform tho, if that were the case we wouldnt be able to flash from 2.1 to 2.3.5 with the same recovery.

Now a hardware change I could see, but then again then said phones wouldnt be able to flash to CM7 etc. See my point

the change was most likely more in the os update than to the hardware. I think the only things LG changed was the screens they were using, and if this old recovery had a kernel not compiled with the driver/module for said screens then you would have no display.
