Just for future reference, people can use ThinkFree Office which comes with the phone to browse contents of the SD card and also run APKs. Whether you email the file to yourself or just transfer it via USB, you have all the necessary tools out of the box .

Thank you so much for this. I have been waiting for an easy 1-click root app for android 2.2.1 running on LG Optimus M because i was afraid to root my phone the "hard way". This made it so much easier for me plus the videos and instructions. Note: before i rooted my phone i took out my sd card and used an old one that i formatted and when i rooted my phone none of my apps deleted, kinda got upset because i switched my sd card for nothing lol but oh well gotta be on the safe side i guess. I also downloaded root explorer to delete some of the bloatware. Kept having trouble with Boingo-wifi so i rebooted my phone and the problem ended.
Again, thank you for this app
I hate to be a party pooper, but this isn't working for me. I installed it, then ran it, and after a few minutes it told me it didn't know what happened, but something went wrong and I should reboot to see if it rooted properly. I rebooted, it didn't work. I backed up my SD card and reformatted it, then put it in and tried it again. Same error message. Rebooted, same problem. Help please?
I'm on an Optimus M on 2.2.1, GingerBreak 1.2 was installed on my phone's internal drive, and USB debugging is on.
1. Preloaded 2.2.1
2. Left the 1.2 ver on the SD card since moving I couldn't find a prog that would allow me to move it to the phone while on the phone (any suggestion?)
3. never reformatted the SD card (obviously if it's running the apk and not on the phone )
4. It's my GF's and she doesn't care as much as I do, but wants the stupid "boingo thing" to go away
I used app (I forgot) to install it from the SD card and used terminal to verify root was successful and got the # when I checked... only Titanium backup would allow me to remove apps. :/ not terrible but hmm... tried three different kinds of uninstallers (superbox, and uninstaller-cant-remember)
When I tried to uninstall boingo from titanium it said it would reboot twice? to remove.. so I did and when it came back it wiped the phone clean and went back to default settings, boingo was still there. Attempted to remove again and this time it dissapeared. Removed that stupid games free thing but this time no craziness.
It's still rooted and I haven't checked her SD card for anything gone whacky.
Any insight on what happened and if I should be concerned about hearing her complain there's something wrong? lol

Help!!
You need to actually install an application capable of doing so. If you plan on staying with the stock ROM, Titanium Backup Pro will let you do this. One thing to keep in mind is if you uninstall a system app, it's permanently removed. They're not worth the ~15MB.
Titanium gives you the option of disabling system apps by freezing them. This way they're out of sight and not accessible by the phone. If you need to return to stock, you can simply do a Factory Reset instead of having to flash in a stock ROM. Make sure you follow the safe list of things to freeze.

trying to install super user and when i run it it says there's a new version of su binary. then it tells me to reboot into recovery mode and flash it to update your su binary....how do u do this?
i get to the above, and it says flash_image: not found
any ideas?
i used gingerbreak v1.20, it rebooted, then i used android terminal emulator to get a command prompt. i tried both su first then flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-optm-2.2.1-GNM.img i also tried export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH then did su after that. either way i get the # though. after i'm done i try to reboot and hold home and volume down with power, but it makes the phone to out of the box status, and i start all over...

Worked like a charm. Thanks.
Weird thing is the stock cpu min is set to 245. I think it would perform better at 122. Set cpu cleared it up for me. Nice to finally have root.
Rooted my phone with the 1.20 as well and I also get "flash_image: not found" when trying to flash the rom... this seems to mean that the command/script is missing from the OS.
UPDATE... I got flash_image installed under the /system/bin folder by using root explorer

Okay think I got it done right first try. I did a download of drivers so comp would recognize my phone. Got appinstaller installed. put the gingerbread 1.20 apk on the SD card in a folder called root. I made sure USB debug was enabled. installed the gingerbread APK.
Rooted and Superuser seems to be fine. Was easy enough.
Any suggestions for good ROM for the lg optimus m? I read a bit about Gingerbread CM7, but wanna get suggestions before i decide.

There are several good ones out, it really depends on your taste and need.
I like teamchickeneater rom, it is a tweaked 2.2.1 stock rom.
there is the sense rom which has the sense theme
there is a gingerbread look alike, which is just 2.2.1 themed to look like gingerbread without the unstability.
and of course there is the cm7 gingerbread rom which is still being worked on and has several issues the guys are hard at work trying to fix.
I like cm7 but with a few things not working as well as I like I am not using it.

About
The GingerBreak APK is a wrapper around the newly released GingerBreak exploit (credits to The Android Exploid Crew), which is meant to attain root access on GingerBread. This specific exploit may work on various Froyo and Honeycomb versions as well.
What the APK and exploit do is as follows:
- The APK puts the right files in the right place to run the exploit
- The APK runs the exploit
- The exploit attempts to attain root access
- If it succeeds, the exploit remounts /system as read-write and runs the installer script
- The installer script attempts to install the su binary and superuser APK, and reboots
Some important things to know:
- You must have USB debugging enabled on your device
- You need to have an SD card (formatted and) inserted - if it doesn't work, try formatting the SD card in your computer, or switching it with a different (or old, etc) SD card
- The APK must be installed to device, NOT SD card
- The exploit may take a while to run, but not more than 10 minutes, if it does, get me a logcat, and reboot the device. In rare occasions, even if the device does not reboot, you may still have root. So check that out after you manually pull battery after 15 minutes or so of being stuck.
- Always reboot between root attempts!
- While (temporary?) root access may be attained, due to locked bootloaders, efuses, S-ON, and whatnot this may still not work on your device. For temproot purposes, use the raw binary exploit (linked below), not this APK.
- The GingerBreak exploit should not be used to attain temproot and continue using the device. It fscks vold, you do not want to be running like that. You want to reboot! So if the root doesn't stick, you (still) have a problem.
Installation
- Optional: Press the Thanks button below this post
- Make sure USB debugging is enabled
- Make sure you have an SD card (formatted and) inserted
- Get the APK on the phone somehow, and install it
- Open the APK, press the root button
- Wait a few minutes. If there are no problems, the device will reboot (note that the reboot itself can take like 10 minutes due to cache wipe)
- Make sure the Superuser app is install and working
- Optional: Install BusyBox from Market (I personally prefer the stericsson installer)
- Optional: Uninstall GingerBreak, you don't need it on your phone anymore
WARNING: Apparently on some devices the root exploit causes the SD card (internal or external) to be formatted. Also, if it gets stuck but you do see the card mounting/unmounting, try formatting your SD card yourself and try again (or use a different SD card) - often this works (a fix for both issues is being looked at)
Credits
- I made the APK and did some slight modding to the exploit code to install from an APK
- The exploit ("GingerBreak") itself is made by The Android Exploid Crew. Original code can be found here: http://c-skills.blogspot.com/2011/04...ngerbreak.html
Manual rooting
From v1.1 it is no longer possible to manually root the device over an ADB connection using the files from this APK. Please use the original binaries from the c-skills website to do this. There are several guides posted here on XDA about how to do this manually, some are mentioned/linked-to in the first few pages of this thread.
Note GingerBreak is not specific to any device, but there is code in there that may not work on device X or Y. The exploit is generic, but that does not mean one size fits all, nor does it mean that there will be no firmwares out there that fix this exploit. A special version may need to be compiled for your device, ask your favorite hacker from your specific device's forum. This APK is meant to make the process easier, but also adds dependancies so that it may not work on your device.
AGAIN, THIS DOES NOT WORK ON S-ON DEVICES !
Changelog
26.04.2011: v1.2
- Removed some code that may break operation while the code itself isn't needed
- Added UnRoot option
- The APK now logs exploit output semi-live
22.04.2011: v1.1
- Modded exploit code to not need /data/local/tmp - this should fix the problem extracting assets as well as be more compatible with various devices (in theory). In case the APK notices that this cannot work, it will warn you about this.
- Added some warnings and errors to the APK
flash custom recovery Download the recovery image and flash_image extract it and copy it to your sdcard recovery-RA-optm-2.2.1-GNM.img
download Android Terminal Emulator from market
open and type su then accept superuser request you should get this #
Then type the following command hit enter and your done
Now steps to flash a rom First place the rom of your choice on your sd card. when in recovery left button on phone is to select, back button to go back and volume for up and down.

The Following 3 Users Say Thank You to jabbawest For This Useful Post:
I used this computer application called Dropbox. Its basically an internet based file transfer.
On your computer:
Go to Dropbox.com> Download Dropbox> Install> Make an account (it's free up to 2 GB)
On you phone:
Go to Market> Download Dropbox app> Sign in with account info
Then,
Click on above links (I only used gingerbreak apk v1.20), download and instead of "Opening" onto computer click "Save" and save into Dropbox on the computer.
Go to Dropbox app in phone and you should be able to install Gingerbreak into phone.
Easy as that.
just read this. I think this is an important step for noobs like me and needs to be part of the tutorial.

This roots the phone and from there i can flash a custom rom. BUT does this have the recovery 2.2.1 on it, so that if in the future i need it to be stock again i can flash it back to stock without root?
