Arrow Optimus One -- Update or No ??

I very recently bought a used LG P500H, and just took it to the local cell phone repair guy who has a very high reputation in the community so it can be unlocked.

I also asked him to update the Android OS from 2.2.1 to the official 2.3.3 as distributed by LG and Telus. His response was to strongly discourage any firmware updates. His reasoning: 'All too often you start getting freeze-ups, weird errors and a general degradation in performance'.

This is my first smartphone and I intend to use it to replace my landline, so it really must be problem free. Also since I am on a meager pension I cannot afford a new one (got this at Value Village for $ 4.99 ).

Should I take this technician's advice and leave well enough alone? My use will be mainly as a touchscreen telephone, not tons of wonderful apps and games.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

You can update safely to 2.3.3, you will not have freeze-up, error or bad performance.

I believe it's safe to assume that any OTA updates (the ones offered by your carrier) are tested and safe.

Check for available updates for your phone in the phone settings (in "About phone")

Edit:
Not the same phone but please read this: just upgraded from 2.3.6 to 4.0.4 it's so much faster!

Thanks for your reply and feedback. Your thoughts are exactly what had occurred to me before talking to this technician. I mean, it is an official upgrade and not like I am trying to go to ICS.

This is much appreciated, and so I will go ahead with the update in a day or so.

Just a quick follow-up....... I installed the PC Desktop Suite. Upon finishing the installation, it told be that my phone needed to be updated. I answered YES and the software from LG did all the rest. No probs, no lock-ups, nothing at all to complaint about.

Thanks to all that read my post.
