I love this guide and thanks a lot for taking the time to write it but I'm having a problem with the optiauto-sfx program. It always ends up saying that the "zerglings did not leave interesting stuff" which according to it means it failed? I've tried this about 5 times now and it still hasn't taken.
Also I don't have any of the baseband versions you've listed. Mine comes up as LS670MVJ_6150. Any help? I really don't care in the slightest about keeping the phone functionality since this "phone" is just a cheap iPod Touch and will never make a phone call again. In fact the reason I'd like to root it in the first place is to get rid of some of the Sprint and Android phone applications like the Gmail app that's taking up internal space.
...I don't have any of the baseband versions you've listed. Mine comes up as LS670MVJ_6150.
I didn't list all possible basebands. In my original post, I wrote, "It'll be something like, "LS670ZVD..." or "LS670MVD..." or "LS670ZVH...", etc. There's no meaningful difference between a "Z" and an "M" so, for example, as far as this guide is concerned, consider "MVD" to be "ZVD" and "MVH" to be "ZVH", etc..." You have "ZVJ".

Optiauto-sfx.exe doesn't work with ZVJ so you have to follow the instructions for ZVJ.
I have a LG Optimus S phone. It will not come on. I have 3 fully charged batties. I have a car, home, and usb charger that I tried all 3. All 3 work with my other lg phone so I know it is not them. When I plug it into a charger, It flashes the LG light and the 4 buttons at the bottom will flash on and off. I tried the reset where you hold the home, volume, power botton down. That did nothing. Can someone please help.

Does this have anything to do with rooting or flashing the phone? If not, I'd suggest that you post a new thread in the main Optimus S forum. The only thing that I can suggest is pulling the batter for a few minutes, pushing the power button, and reinstalling a known-good, fully-charged battery.
i installed the drivers but but the phone is still not read by windows except if usb debugging is turned off. anything i can do??? Optiauto-sfx.exe just says waiting for device to be connected.... pls help and reply asap...

Windows should see your phone via USB regardless of USB debugging being turned on or off. (I just tested mine both ways.) Without USB connectivity Optiauto-sfx.exe has no chance.
Maybe try using a different USB port on your PC, or try with a different PC.
You may also want to try putting Optiauto-sfx.exe at the top level of your boot drive (probably your "C:" drive).
Great post...I now have the confidence to attempt this.
I started with ZVJ, so I've downloaded the update.zip, and added it to the highest level of the SD card. I've done “apply sdcard:update.zip” twice (actually 4 times now. The phone will not reboot...I only get the word "android' on my screen. I've given it over an hour to boot up. What should I do ?
I'm new to rooting. I followed the steps that you outlined and it seems my optimus s will not root. I tried several times with no luck. I went back to stock ZVD and when I run optiauto-sfx it finds my device but it seems most of the lines state that it is unable to chmod or data is read only or operations are not permitted. I pasted as much of the log I could copy below. Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Usually if opti-auto-sfx ends up saying "It's a GG man!" then it worked. Are you saying it didn't work? When you start in recovery mode, is it the stock Sprint/LG recovery?
But your log does seem to indicated that optiauto-sfx can't write to your file system. If so, I'm not sure why. You could try launching optiauto-sfx from your top-level directory. Maybe that will help.

I tried launching the optiauto-sfx from the top level directory and from the desktop. I also tried running it as an administrator and still no luck. I did notice that when I turn on mass storage and check my sd card that a 000root folder is created and within the folder it has the files busybox, flash_image, su, superuser.apk, etc. I think I will try another USB cable or try launching from other directories and see if it takes. I would think since others had success mine should root as well. I'll just keep trying. Oh, and when I go into recovery mode it is the stock/Sprint recovery (Android system recovery <3e>. Thanks for your help on this. I greatly appreciate it.
Hmmm... You've probably already done this, but maybe go into "Applications" settings and make sure "USB debugging" is turned on?
Yup. I have it on but I got it to work. I believe my anti-virus was blocking the program from executing properly. The first time I tried it the malicious software warning came on and even after trying when turned off it wouldn't work. I uninstalled my anti-virus, rebooted my computer, and it worked! Thanks a lot for your help on this!
The Following User Says Thank You to Goalie30 For This Useful Post:
Thanks for letting us know about the anti-virus issue. I'll add that to my guide. Although I didn't have that problem with my Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) antivirus software, it makes sense because when I do an antivirus scan, MSE red-flags Optiauto.sfx.exe as an Android "exploit". Of course that's exactly why we use Optiauto-sfx.exe-- BECAUSE it's an exploit. But antivirus software is made for normal people, not people like us who hack their phones.
Can someone give me a link to find a Cm7 mod download with the ls670? I couldn't find it on the website for this device! Thank you!
It should be on Razz's guide when he discusses about downloading a custom ROM. That's where I got it. I'm using it now and I think it's a really nice ROM.
Hey everyone,
First off, thanks for this guide. I'm having a problem getting started, and I'm hoping for some help. I need to downgrade VJ before I can do anything, but I can't seem to get the rooting to work. I enabled Debugging, and my computer sees the phone as a "Removable Disk (E: )" drive, but when I click on it, it says "Please insert a disk into Removable Disk (E: )". My phone says "USB connected" and "USB debugging connected", so I tried to run optiauto-sfx.exe, then when it finished I downloaded the Titanium Backup, but when I tried to run the Titanium Backup, it said my phone wasn't rooted. So I thnk the optiauto-sfx.exe failed because my computer isn't fully "seeing" my phone... Any ideas how to fix this?
EDIT: I should probably mention I've downloaded and run the newest drivers for the phone. I first tried the one linked in the first post, but when that didn't work, I Googled it and found someone else posted another Driver elsewhere on the forum, but that didn't work either so I went to the LG website and downloaded one. But it still isn't working right.
EDIT AGAIN: I figured I probably should say I'm running Windows 7. Also, when I turn on USB Storage, I can view the files on the phone (the E drive), but the guide says it turn USB storage off, so I don't know what to do...
EDIT AGAIN, I KNOW, SERIOUSLY?: Ok. I reran the .exe (this time as admin from my computer's root drive) and paid more attention to what it said, and mine said the same as Goalie30's posted above. Goalie30 says his problem was caused by an anti-virus, but I don't have an anti-virus, so I have no idea how to fix it...

As I mentioned in the guide above, if you were (are) on ZVJ, then you first need to downgrade to ZVD (using the instructions in the Appendix) in order to root using opti-auto.exe. Did you successfully downgrade to ZVD using the instructions in the Appendix? You didn't say. To determine which baseband you have, see the guide's section called, "How do I determine which baseband version I have?"

Thanks for your post, RazzMaTazz.
I'm trying to downgrade now. The guide says:
---- How to make your phone a stock ZVD (Android v2.2 "Froyo") phone:
A) Read the introductory part of the main guide (above) and then make sure that you have about 100MB of free space on your SD card.
B) Instead of downloading a custom ROM in step 4 (above), you'll download Sprint's stock ZVD ROM called "update.zip" from this link on Sprint's website, and save it to your PC.
----
I took the red parts to mean to do steps 1, 2 (A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,L), 3 (A,B,C) and then do the update.zip on step 4. So, basically, root the phone, backup, then do the downgrade. Did I totally read that wrong?

Your interpretation (of my Appendix instructions) was perfectly reasonable, but it's not what I meant. Sorry for the lack of clarity. I've edited the relevant steps of the Appendix to clarify. Basically, if you have an unrooted, stock ZVJ phone, you'll need to first downgrade to an unrooted stock ZVD ROM using your stock recovery, and then optionally folllow the main guide to root and optionally install a custom ROM.

Thanks so much for your reply! It helped a lot. I managed to root and install ReBorn ROM with your guide with minimal issues. The only thing I couldn't do is the Titanium Backup zip (C3, I think). I can create backups, but not a zip. The menus don't seem to be where they are suppose to be. I know that they just added an update with a new 'create recovery update.zip' option, but that's for pro-only. Maybe that's why I couldn't do it?

Thanks for posting. I'm glad to hear that you were able to root and install Reborn ROM. Thanks for posting. Based on the current description of Titanium Backup on the Play Store, it seems that the "create zip" function was moved into the premium "Pro" version so I've edited my guide above to reflect that.
There's a cool feature of Reborn ROM that, unfortunately, I didn't realize until much later so FYI... If you (swipe down from the top of the home screen and) turn on WiFi, it will automatically switch between WiFi and 3G (for example when you're in your home or out on the road). So I just always leave WiFi "on". With other ROMs, I used to have to switch it on and off manually.
Thank you for the great guide!
All went smooth to the very end, where I had an "oh Crap moment".
I bought the Titanium to get the xxx.zip capability. The zip is enough like your old version, that it worked flawlessly. It ABORTED leaving 3 files zipped, the "oh Crap moment". I said "oh Crap" and figured I would just boot up reload the files 1 x 1, from the batch way.
To my surprise every thing except whatever those 3 files were loaded. All my apps were there grinning at me.
One quick ?. Is there a way to wake up the phone from the Home key? My power button is under a rubber boot and I'm used to using the home key to wake it up. No biggie It's great the way it is but if its just a switch or setting,,, thought I'd ask.
Three cheers on the guide. Very comprehensive. Some of the others are to involved, or just a real waste of time.
Again many thanks, G

SineWave: HeatherMC nailed it.
1) Download the "ButtonsWake.zip" file found at the link which HeatherMC posted above.
2) Move the file to the top level of your SD card.
3) From recovery, choose the option that's something like "Choose ZIP from SD card, and flash the zip. (I've moved on to the Cannibal Open Touch v2.02 recovery and I don't remember the exact menu options for CWM.)
Like you, the lack of the front-four button wake-up bothered me from the minute that I first flashed Reborn ROM, so I flashed the aforementioned zip from day 1 and never really thought about it again. Works great.
Hello, thank you so much for this post. It was very helpful. I just had a few questions. So I installed the Kraven's CM7 ROM with the "GAPPS" which were both provided by the links. I have now encountered a couple of problems. First of all, the home button is not functioning. When in any app, it will not return to the home screen. Another problem is there is no lock screen. When you lock it into sleep mode it is just fine, but if you press any button it wakes it back up without a lock screen. this isn't a huge problem except when it's in my pocket I can accidentally be calling people, texting, etc. And the final problem I have encountered was while using almost any app, if I am connected to 3G or wifi I continually get the notice " Sorry! The process com.google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." So I was just wondering if you knew why I was having these problems, or what you suggest would be best to fix them.
Thanks.
14JDowns: I've never tried Kraven's CM7 ROM. I'd recommend searching and asking over on the Kraven CM7 forum (at Android Central, I think).
You can probably eliminate the error message that you're getting by clearing the data from Google service framework and all other Google related apps and services.
i had an mvj rooted phone that worked for verizon and when i read this i thought it would be flashed back to sprint but after the flash it says its still with preferred system and that i am roaming. i really need sprint please help

The instructions in my original post are only for the Optimus S, not Verizon. If you have an Optimus S with Xonia custom recovery, you can install the Sprint ZVD update.zip twice (that I describ in the Appendix) and it will return you back to stock Sprint ZVD.
