The reason bigsupersquid, myself, and many others forget to mention the "su" in terminal is because of a trick we use:

Open terminal, press your menu key, then select Preferences. Scroll down to the bottom and select Initial command. It should say:
Code:
export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH;
Add su; to the end so it looks like this:
Code:
export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH;su;
This way, everytime you open terminal, you will immediately have root.

Since we do this, we sometimes forget to mention to people that they need to type su before doing anything else in terminal.

Cool! Added that to terminal, for the two times I'm probably going to use it in the future.

I never even think about it. It's second nature to just type in su at the first prompt. I'm an old Slackware guy, used to having to type startx at the first prompt after login.

that is one of the best things about terminal emulator, adding to the initial commands.
in cm7 and cwm-based recovery, adb shell defaults to root, and i use adb a lot.

i also just type su first in the terminal without thinking about it, but i like sl4a better than terminal emulator since you can make home screen shortcuts from scripts.

it's like running my Linux installs as root, i don't like typing sudo to do simple things like bork my hard drive or change certain files. if things actually get messed up enough, i just reformat the pc.
when i learned to program, there were no logins and the operating systems didn't try to tell you what not to do

I grew up on Windows. I'm used to having an OS that doesn't need internal tweaking.

You might want to try Ubuntu. It runs along side your Windows OS. You can select how much of your hardrive that it shares. Everything is some much easier to do than with Windows.

not unless you want to turn off things like remote registry, and like 10 other default system services that don't need running unless you're networked...
or you want things optimized for an older pc, when you have to change settings in several different esoteric locations...
Jerry is right, though, Ubuntu seems closest to windoze in the Linux realm as far as being plug-and-play but needing severe tweaking to be made efficient and fast without new hardware under it.

I'm an x FreeBSD user (many many years ago when everything was installed manually), but since I've been into heavy gaming Windows is much easier than trying to configure stuff in WineX, Cedega etc. etc. etc. Just too much of a hassle, and I hate dual boot.

Ubuntu is nice for newbs though.

It's also harder to get a virus on it.

Well, somewhere in the neighborhood of 97% of all viri (yes, that IS the correct plural) happen to be for Windows. Coincidence? I think not.

Windows is a security hell hole. If they would make more compatible Linux games there would be no need for wine.

Well, i hit a snag with 12-07. It was running fine. I decided to reboot and when it booted up, i unlocked it and the ADW Launcher kept force closing and everytime i would push ok or w/e it would just pop right back up and say the same thing instantly so there was basically nothing i could do at all. I rebooted, wiped the caches, and it still did the same thing. I ended up doing a full wipe and will just have to reinstall my apps. Dunno why it did this, unless it was the latest ADW update for my ICS theme?

12-07 runs fine for me, even with a handful of ADW themes installed. Although to be fair, I haven't tried the ICS theme.

The theme could very well be your problem. If it's still acts up after a fresh install, then another install without the theme would be in order.

I've had themes do this to me. If you wait until the next build, and install,it might work. You could also try a ROM with a different kernel.

Please clarify, is it an ADW theme, or UOT?

I agree. Ubuntu is definitely a great starting point on your Linux adventure! I used that when I first started then bounced around to different distros. I recommend using a website called Distrowatch to see the most popular Linux distros. My main use of Linux is installed on my USB stick: Puppy Linux! Love this thing! 90-100mbs and I've got ms word, power point, excel spreadsheet, Photoshop etc capabilities!

All in all, Linux is awesome. If you're an Android user, I highly recommend dabbling in the art of Linux

I started on Red Hat 6 on a Pentium 75. That was in 1996. Then I discovered Slackware, and it was all over from there. I recommend playing with Slackware because a good deal of it is configured from the command line. This means you will learn many commands that also apply here, in the Terminal Emulator. Win!

It was an adw theme. After the fresh install I put the theme back on and am not running into any problems. So confused why this happened out of the blue

Glad it's working. If our phones ran like they do on the commercials, there wouldn't be any reason to root!

The two biggest problems I've had are with themes not specifically for the ROM, and Launchers streched too thin.

Is there a way to make the screen orientation switch in the notification pull down lock in the current position rather than reverting to portrait?

Go to menu /settings /CyanogenMod Settings /Interface/Notification Power Widget /Widget buttons, check the Screen Orientation box.
If you have more than five boxes checked, they might not all show up.

I have it in the widget row in the notification bar, but i was just wondering if there was a way to set it so that when i click it in landscape mode it stays in landscape mod instead of just reverting to portrait? Its likely just not possible, thought I'd ask though. It'd be good for web browsing or reading comics, etc.

It's possible:

Settings > ADWLauncher > System Preferences > Home Orientation

Select the 'Auto/sensor' option

I want the orientation to like lock in its current position when i turn off the screen orientation button instead of reverting to portrait. Like, so i can read a manga on my phone and wiggle all around getting comfy with my phone and not have to worry about the orientation changing. Also, i use laubcherpro so i didn't switch to adw to see if it would work cause i haven't had a break to yet, but i don't think its quite what it is. I make sense, right? Days like I'm typing in landscape now and then when i push the button it switches to portrait. I want it to lock in landscape, so that i can hold the phone in any position nd it doesn't change.

Days like I'm typing in landscape now and then when i push the button it switches to portrait. I want it to lock in landscape, so that i can hold the phone in any position nd it doesn't change.
Settings>>CyanogenMod settings>>Display (uncheck all but 90 or 270).

Maybe we should add these instructions to the main post, Jerry. Seems like a handful of people with the OV use Link2SD. It's understandable since we're so limited with only like 150mbs of space haha xD
These directions worked, I upgraded to 12072011 and all my apps are back. I did however also have to clear the Market's data and cache also for it to recognize the apps that were moved by Link2SD.

Thanks!

alright you guys...I don't even want to ask this, because I feel like such a noob right now...here we go:
I decided to try out the different styles of lock screen sliders, because I was doing a new theme and wanted to actually theme the lock screen this time, and I wanted to know what the different styles actually looked like, since I had only ever used the 'ring' style. So I get to the 'lense' style...which looks nice, BTW....and it won't unlock my phone. I know you slide it down, but it just bounces back up w/o unlocking it. What the heck am I missing? I don't have a pattern lock or anything that could possibly be messing with it. I really *really* don't want to have to wipe and reflash, as I have not gone thru the rather lengthy process of preparing to do that, and with my links2sd, I have to either wipe nothing or everything, and yes I've tried every single tip and trick thats been posted about that, I still get apps that are missing, etc. so its all or nothing.

I seriously can't believe I'M LOCKED OUT OF MY PHONE AND MY LOCKSCREEN IS MOCKING ME!!

help???

EDIT: Crisis averted! I had my boyfriend call my phone and just backed out of the call screen...luckily it didn't back out into the lock screen and I could change my lockscreen setting while I was on the call. Whew. Anywho...write this down: DON"T use the lense lockscreen! That is all.

Luckily I never turned gesture unlock off. So when my thumb randomly swiped the gesture my screen unlocked.

Wondering if someone can explain this...

I just flashed to a new verison. It definitely worked, as I went from 2.3.5 to 2.3.7 but somehow I lost nothing. All my apps, backgrounds, etc, are still in place. How did this happen?

That's how it should work if you only wipe cache and dalvik cache before flashing.

Oh, awesome! Thanks.

I guess my only other question then would be...it seems like my startup is a bit longer than before. Not sure if that's normal. And when i rebooted I had to "force close" adw launcher.

Things seem faster and more responsive, overall.

I think having gestures enabled is what caused the lockscreen to misbehave.

The other locks work perfectly fine with the gestures enabled. I've been using it like that for a couple months.

no,no see i DIDN'T have gestures enabled when that happened!! I didn't have anything weird enabled, just straight up lockscreen with the lense style, and boop! I'm locked out! (its ok tho, its only one of about 4 things that have gone wrong for me tonight, and it was the easiest fix )

Has anyone used simple2ext on the Optimus V before? I like link2sd but it doesn't move data or cache but apparently simple2ext does.

I does for me, and I use the free version. Just tap a movable app in the main screen, you'll be in a screen with all kinds of options. You can manipulate your apps, dex files, data, and cache. It displays the total size of the app, broken down by file and location.

If it doesn't do that, then what does it do? That is the whole point of the app and the 2nd partition.

Do you have a theme installed? Because I have one on mine and I usually have launched pro FC when I reboot too. It only happens one time after I reboot and then its good till next time. Also, I dont have my cpu settings locked on boot(right term?[probably not, but my cpu settings go back to normal on reboot])
Im wondering if it has to do with a theme?
