Notsure lg optimus v. new android user looking for root info

I have an lg optimus v. Its my first android phone ever. Ive had it for about 3 months now. Iam happy overall, but internal storage is kind of a problem.
I researched and found out that you can move preloaded apps to the sd card, but only if you have "rooted" your phone. I get what rooting a phone does, but im not understanding the lingo. Roms, flash, recovery? Can someone explain these and other common root terms?
How dangerous is rooting?
Instructions for rooting for newbies? (Lg optimus v )
I am very new to amdroid so,detailed help is appreciated thnx

Alas, im waiting to root my phone until iget more info.

I would suggest starting with the "All things root" subforum at the very top of this forum. Lots of info there.
