You can check if you're on Android 2.2 by Settings->About

What update did you apply? What 2.2 ROM did you flash?

If you flashed a 2.2 ROM like Swedish Spring, for example, you should see Android Version 2.2 under Settings>About phone>Android Version.....

Also there you should also see Model number (ZTE-BLADE).....Baseband version....Kernel version.....Build Number

That does not sound correct for 2.2

Thank you dannymur for your reply, but I was following the upgrade from the Orange web site. I tried again today but it only went as far as tiny.com/clocknow and the site was either not working or had moved. I would prefer if it was posible to download it from the computer. The rom etc is all standard I just wanted to upgrade to improve the phone.

There is a 2.2 update available from Orange UK for the San Francisco??

Can you post the link you are following, as I am not aware that Orange have posted any Froyo update for the San Fran?

It would be great if there was, but I don't think so, and of course, it would still be laden down with Orange Bloatware......

OK simmo, I think I see where you are talking about......this is a third-party site, which has various tutorials, some good, some bad, relating to the San Fran.....

This is a link, see below, like I asked you to provide, but no matter, I have been at this site before, so good idea where you mean.

Orange San Francisco - Now 99.99 - Install Android 2.2, Tutorials, Guides & Tips

It is easy to post a link, so we know where you are talking about. You simply need to copy what is in the address bar of your browser, and paste it into your post, not as you did above. I will show a pic of where I think you are talking about:

It is not an official Orange site, so it gives guidance on how to root, install ClockworkMod, Install (Flash!!!!) a Custom Rom (not official Orange stuff)

Have you read any of the tutorials, like rooting, clockworkmod, etc.....

Is your OSF still using the original Orange Software, called Stock ROM, which was Android 2.1 (Eclair) with a lot of additional Orange branding and bloatware?

Have you rooted your phone, and installed ClockworkMod....these would be necessary first steps for upgrading your phone to Froyo 2.2.......

Those questions need to be answered before you go the route of Flashing a Custom ROM (which means installing unofficial software, OS, and ClockworkMod Recovery on your phone).

Unless you wanna go the TPT (Total Phone Transfer) route, which does most of the work for you, but you learn very little.

Thank you dannymur for going to all this trouble. That is the site I got as far as question 11 completed, but when i went further as in previous thread it would not complete. The phone is origonal software/rom. Mr Pigfish says it is GEN 1. On settings it says 2.1- update 1. I hope this is of some use to you . Many thanks for your time.

Hi dannymur, one final question I have been through the programme and have all the apps on the browser right up to the Recovery Manager. My question is on Settings the Firmware version still shows 2.1-update1. is this right should it not be 2.2?
many thanks.

First thing to do is download the Phandroid App from Market....on your phone launch Market, sign in with Google Account, search for Phandroid and download the App.

Everything is much easier then, all from Phone!!!

Link, if you need: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.blau.android.phandroidnews

You can sign into the Forum here on your Phone, I would mark this Forum as a Favourite, even on the PC, now, if you are not using the App yet, easier to navigate to this thread.

OK, just wanna check/verify if you are rooted....

Can you please download this from market :

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck

Just click above and it will bring you to Android Market....sign in with your Google Account.

It's just a simple app to check for root on your phone, as you should have installed Universal Androot previously, according to the guide you are using.

Just a suggestion before we go any further, I think we will dispense with that guide/tutorial......if that's OK, there are better ways to skin a cat, or to get to what you want. If not OK, we go with the guide!!

There is a better root app, Z4Root, modified for OSF/Blade, which will give you permanent root on your phone.

Download link below, just click and save to SD card.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/32953239/z4root_blade_perm_root_v2.zip

To be continued.....

Downloaded your last link for z4root. Instead of being able to put it on my sim card it says to complete action using either ES Zip Viewer com.estrongs.android.pop or ES Zip Viewer com estrong .android.pop.cupcake. What is best?

Best??

Do you have two versions of ES File Explorer on your phone??

Looks like it, as Cupcake is for earlier Android 1.5/1.6 (Cupcake/Donut).....

BTYW, there is a difference between SIM Card and SD Card........not talking about SIM card here, OK??

Look it up, google is your friend!!!

The zip file is on your SD Storage, probably in /sd/download folder.....you should look there with ES, just to get the feel of using the File Manager.

But as you have ES Manager on your system, it automatically will open a zip viewer on download.

[BTW, If you have two versions of ES, I would un-install the Cupcake version, it will lead to endless trouble for you.]

However, I would tap on the other option:

ES Zip Viewer com.estrongs.android.pop

This will allow you to view the files in the zip file you downloaded, which should have 3 files, 2 will be xxxyyy.java files, the other will be:

z4root_blade_perm_root_v2.apk

So, you should tap the z4root.apk file, and allow it to be installed....OK

Then, run Z4Root when installed, you need to go to the App Drawer and tap on Z4Root.

Tell it to do Permanent Root if asked, and allow to re-boot to finish root job, may take a few minutes!!! let it do its stuff.

You should now have permanently rooted your phone, but, there is an option to un-root, if you need to.

BTW, you should try to familiarise yourself with basic concepts, such as posting links on forums, android basics, file management, stuff like that....

hand-holding will have to stop at some time, but we will get you to 2.2 or 2.3, if that's what you want.....after that, normal support services will be resumed, OK?? Got probs, post the symptoms, help will be given!!!!

To be contd......let me know how you get on!! (Next step will be to flash a ClockworkMod Recovery on your phone, but not as in that guide, OK)

Hi, sorry that you seem to be getting fed up with this, it is more involved than I thought it was going to be after reading other threads on this matter. I have got as far as the Z4root on the browser. As for the ES File Explorer cannot see any difference between them other than one shows the files vertically the other horizontally.Cannot find SD storage and I know the difference between SIM and SD cards. Thank you for your patience.

Simm, please......I am not getting fed up

I want to help you here, if I can, believe me....it ain't so hard...we all started somewhere

I think the purpose here is to try to help those who need help, and sometimes ppl here assume a level of knowledge which we forget that noobs, like your good self, may not have.....

(BTW, noobs is not meant to be offensive, I was a noob last March, and was glad to get help here from ppl who had more experience than me )

my fault, and no probs, we will continue....OK (Don't mind my OK's, I say it all the time, even when I am speaking, just a form of words, OK!!!)

I need to know what you mean by saying things like

Quote:
I have got as far as the Z4root on the browser.
This makes no sense to me.....have you installed the app Z4Root, which was in the dropbox link I posted? Does it show up in your App Drawer?

I will show you my App Drawer, with ES File Manager and another with Z4Root, if this helps, OK.

ES File Explorer in App Drawer...

z4Root in App Drawer...

(App Drawer ----->press Home Key should get you there!!)

Es File Manager....when you launch this App, it should show SD card contents.....in /sdcard/ folders and files will be shown.

I will show 2 pics:

ES File Explorer....Details view showing /sdcard/

ES File Explorer....Folder view showing /sdcard/

Your downloaded z4Root Zip file should be in a /sdcard/download folder....scroll down and you will find it, if you have not installed it already.

If you tap on that zip file, it will bring up the "Complete action using" pop-up window.

You should tap ES Zip Viewer here.

You will then be presented with the Zip contents, as I already mentioned in a previous post.

You should tap the z4root_blade_perm_root_v2.apk to install z4Root on your phone.......

come back for further stuff, and let me know where you are, OK

Hi again simmo, we are on a Bank Holiday week-end here in Ireland, but of course peeing down with rain, so we got some time

You have installed z4Root, which will give you permanent root....

Important have you run the app, and allowed it to permanently root your phone, this will involve a re-boot, which you should allow.

Next, we will proceed to installing ClockworkMod Recovery for your phone, which is Gen 1?

Instead of using the Recovery Manager app, which you were unable to download earlier, we will use Rom Manager, from Market, link below:

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager&hl=en

It will download and install the RM App.

When you launch, it will look like this:

Rom Manager GUI (Top)

Rom Manager GUI (Bottom)

Note, this is my own installation, which is the Premium, but you don't need this (yet )...so yours will show Free or something like that!!!

Just take time out to look at this You Tube Video, which gives a pretty good run-down of RM and it's background and uses:

Detailed Walk-Through of ROM Manager for Android - YouTube

Warning Please do not flash/install the latest recovery shown, as it is Gen 2, we will get to flashing an appropriate Gen 1 Recovery next......

[hint....the last option on the RM GUI, shown above in Rom Manager GUI (Bottom)]

BTW, GUI = Graphical User Interface

More later, gotta go out into the deluge

So you have installed Rom Manager.

Now to flash your Gen 1 Recovery.

Connect to WiFi or Mobile Data.

Launch Rom Manager, scroll down to All ClockworkMod Recoveries, tap this option. You should see this:

3.0.1.4 should be selected, if not, select it by tapping on it, green radio button should show selected.

When you tap on this recovery, it should start to download, there is a progress bar on top.

Before or after this, I am not entirely sure, but you may be asked to confirm Phone Model, to ensure correct recovery is flashed for the Phone Model (ZTE Blade). (Slightly different for me, as I have CMR already installed)

It should look like this:

Obviously, if you are asked for this, tap/select ZTE Blade, and your 3.0.1.4 Recovery will be flashed on your phone........

Having now flashed a recovery, to ensure it works, you should try rebooting into Recovery......the BIG TEST!!!!!

You can do this from Rom Manager, by tapping on Reboot into Recovery or by re-booting your phone and doing the following:

Power down phone by pressing and holding top power button, and select Power Off.

Leave for a few seconds, optionally pull and replace Battery (don't think this is necessary)

Now, Press Vol Down & Power buttons together, until Green Android.

Continue to hold Vol Down until you get the ClockworkMod menu!!!!

It should look something like this:

ClockworkMod Recovery Main Menu

use the Volumn Control to scroll up/down menus, Back Key to back-out of menus, and Home Key to select option........

The CWR menus and text are quite small, so read carefully.....you can do a lot of harm here, but you will usually be asked for confirmation....don't do it!!!!! yet!!!!

Be careful what you do here, just familiarise yourself with ClockworkMod, read more here:

What Is ClockworkMod Recovery And How To Use It On Android [Complete Guide]

Thanks to Haroon Q. Raja of addictivetips

OK, gotta stop, back tomorrow........

BTW, you may be asked to allow Superuser Access , allow this when asked, tap allow......and tick remember

Pic to illustrate Superuser Request

Hi simmo4238......

Please let me know if you have succeeded with flashing/installing ClockworkMod Recovery, and you are able to boot into recovery?

I need to know so we can continue to a conclusion

OK Simmo!!

We are that point now, where we are almost** ready to download and flash a 2.2 Custom Rom.

I recommend Swedish Spring Gen 1/2 for you.......it is by far the most satisfactory of the 2.2 Roms available, it has a really good feel on the Blade.

Official Modaco thread: [ROM] [froyo] Swedish Spring RLS5 [2011-04-19] [OLED+TFT] [Gen1][Gen2] - Android @ MoDaCo

Sticking with Gen 1 for the moment, but I have no doubt that you will upgrade to Gen 2 when you are ready, to give yourself the option of going to one of the many 2.3 Gingerbread Rom's now available, including CanogenMod 7.1 and later Nightlies.......

** However, I did say almost, coz we need to do some housekeeping first, to ensure you will be able to:

  • Revert to your current set-up in the event of any problem...Nandroid in Recovery
  • Make a back-up of those Apps you want to restore...Titanium Backup
  • Back-up your Contacts....Synchronise contacts with Google
  • Back-up your SMS to Gmail...

I will also recommend a number of Apps which should also improve your user experience:

  • You already have ROM Manager
  • Titanium Backup....allows you to backup and restore those Apps you have bought or need after flashing new ROM.
  • App2SD for Froyo.....to utilise your SD storage for Apps
  • Launcher Pro.....to give a more smooth and configurable experience on your Blade.
  • My Phone Explorer....a powerful phone management software for your Desktop PC.
  • SMS Backup+....allows you to easily back-up and restore SMS/MMS to your GMail Account
  • Cache Cleaner NG.....allows you to remove all the cache files from the internal memory and (optionally) from the SD card.
  • Go SMS Pro....best (IMHO) replacement Messaging App

There will probably more which will come to mind later, but those are enough to be going on with.

Quote:
I am putting this in quotes because it goes somewhat beyond the scope of the guide, using an as yet unproven App to achieve what Titanium Backup has been proven to do for quite some time now.

Just an update on Titanium Backup....there is an alternative, but I can't vouch for it. It uses your Nandroid back-up, made in Recovery, to restore Apps, SMS, etc.

AppExtractor....AppExtractor is a tool which will allow you to restore individual applications, data, SMS, and MMS messages from your ROM Manager backups.....just a thought, hope I am not complicating things too much!!!!
Back l8r with full instructions as to next steps...OK

The only reports I've seen of App Extractor are negative so I'd stick with the Tried and Tested Titanium.

Prolly right there El Prez.... maybe yet to be proven App.

It was just a thought.... might still become very useful.... I like the simple interface and the idea of using a Nandroid as source? No?

Aye, it probably needs a little refinement.

Apologies if it came across as if I was rubbishing your suggestion sir

Nae need for any apology, or indeed embarrassment, a chara.......

I have taken your suggestion on board, and put the App Extractor para in quotes, with a warning note.

Please do feel free to add suggestions to this thread, which is really about helping new Android adopters achieve a level of competence in rooting, flashing custom ROM's, installing useful Apps and generally getting to know their way around the strange new world of Android generally, specifically on the ZTE Blade.

I would welcome all contributions here.

Simmo, to add to Dannymurs post a couple above this one, sometimes you'll find that your phone hasn't been syncing to Gmail because the contacts are set as phone contacts, not Google contacts. To check, log in to the gmail account associated with the handset and click contacts, if they're there excellenté. If not, you'll need to import them manually. To do that, you can check this post for instructions: Syncing back and forth HTC Desire to G Mail and Windows Mail

If you don't buy the full version of Titanium, the apps should be linked to the gmail account you've got associated with the handset so they should download themselves again when the handset syncs for the first time so rather than restore them with TB, just let the market do it's thing and you can restore the data (game saves etc.) on an app by app basis. That way, they'll be tied to the market and will update themselves when new versions are available. If you just restore with TB, the apps won't associate with the market and won't update.

With the full version, you can restore apps and data; there's also a tool which will associate the apps back to the market account (Market Doctor), meaning they'll receive auto updates. Which ever version you go for though, ONLY restore User Apps (you can filter them), restoring system apps might give you headaches.

Once you've made sure everything is synced, post and we'll get you through flashing the actual ROM.

Hello dannymur,
a couple of problems, App2SD not compatible with phone.
Launcher Pro on phone but cannot open.
My Phone explorer, cannot open email account.
Which is the best App to use to get rid of unwanted apps eg. games etc.?
I am not sure about Cache Cleaner NG at this time what would I really need it for?

It won't be until you have 2.2 on there (unless you have already?)

Hit the home button, it should give you the option to switch to LPP (and make it the default)

Where is it asking for your email account? It only needs this to sync with the outlook/thunderbird account on your PC iirc. If you don't have that setup, I think it will give that error message.

With titanium you can freeze stuff you don't want/need. I'd be careful though, as removing/freezing a system app could cause the phone to hang on bootup.

Hi El Presidente, I have been checking to see if my contacts are their but I cannot get into my account for some reason , it keeps asking me to put in my password. Orange sent me an email while I was doing this so I phoned and they said a few phones were doing this at the moment and would have to go to the factory reset option.

Don't factory reset (yet anyway). If you're rooted, you can still backup your apps etc to the SD Card with Titanium. You can also export your contacts to the SD Card too, just don't import them to the gmail account. So in the link I gave, just go through steps 1-10.

I know you're just going by what Orange have told you, but I'm not sure how factory resetting will have any bearing on your ability to access to your gmail account via your PC? What exactly is happening when you try to access?

That's what we're here for!

I'm 99.99% sure a factory reset wouldn't solve that. Can you access the gmail app on your phone with no problems?

Yeah, a factory reset wouldn't sort it then.

If you enter the captcha (that's what those weird letters are called), doesn't it let you in? You could see about using the google password recovery option if you can't get in.

We're just here to help.

Simmo, can you backup your contacts using the method I mentioned here and have you installed Titanium? If not, can you do so now please?

Once installed, open TB. the first time it runs it takes a little while to open as it needs to scan the apps you've installed and check for root/busybox access. If you get a super user prompt up, click allow. Once it's done what it needs to do, you'll be presented with a screen like the one below:

From there, hit the Backup & Restore button at the top of the screen. This will take you to a list of all the apps installed on your handset. On that screen, hit the menu button on your phone, then filters.

In the next screen, under the section entitled, Filter By Type, you want to put a tick in the box which says User, then press the Apply button at the top right hand side of the page.

You'll then be taken to back to the list of apps you've installed on your phone.

From there, hit menu, then batch and you'll be taken to a screen which looks like this:

You want to hit RUN next to backup all users apps, the next screen you see will look like this:

Press select all, then run the batch operation. It will then backup alll your apps and the data associated with them. Once you've done that, let me know and we can take it from there.

That's fine, I should've said your initial screen may look a little different as you might not have the paid version or a dropbox account linked (I'm also using a different handset); apologies for that.

As long as you have root, SQLite and Busybox access, that's fine.

Nearly there!

As Danny suggested, download the ROM from here. It'll be the first link on the page you want (Swedish_Spring_RLS5.zip). Once completed, copy that to the root (not in any folder) of your phones SD Card. You'll then want to download an MD5 checksum checker, which you can get from here. Once downloaded, open the zip file, then move MD5.exe to your desktop and double click to open it. Once you've opened it, copy the MD5 (C801FDAD511944C9CEE7139E866E160C) to the clipboard of your PC, then hit browse and navigate to Swedish_Spring_RLS5.zip on the root of your SD Card. The bar at the top of the MD5 program should turn green.

If it does, close the app and disconnect your phone from the PC. If it doesn't, redownload the ROM zip file and try again.

I've just seen your edit, the SQLite above the bit which says Dropbox access. Is it ticked?

Is that all it's doing? If you head to the apps menu, I think there's an app called Launcher chooser or something like that? If you open it, you can select an alternative to the Orange Launcher, that might sort.

Failing that, did you delete the app, or rename it?

The next step was the actual ROM flash if you still want to go ahead with it?

Hi guys....little problem here, it seems.

Firstly, no need to remove Orange Branding and Apps, they will disappear after you have flashed your new ROM, Swedish Spring I think, unless you want to return to Stock 2.1, from the Nandroid Back-up you have made

You have made a back-up in Recovery???

I did not see it above, and if you have not, it may be too late!!

Secondly, did you remove any system app or apps, with that App (System App Remover)??

It looks like the Orange Launcher is missing.....

When you launched that App, there was a warning pop-up, below:

Warning on first Launch of System App Remover

But no worries, your phone is not bricked, I am sure of that.

If you can get into Recovery [Remember.....Vol Down and Power held together while powering up],

and you have downloaded the Swedish Spring zip file to your PC, as mentioned above by El Prez

you can use Recovery to connect to your PC, and mount your phone there, as USB storage, so we can see the SD card contents:

I have a pic from my PC to illustrate this:

Blade mounted as FAT32 [G:] drive from Recovery

more later.......mostly working with ClockworkMod Recovery....exciting, eh!!

So, for tonite, just download that SS 5 ROM zip file, as above........

and, let me know if you can get into Recovery, as above, so we will then proceed to:
  1. wiping data/factory reset......
  2. wiping cache partition......
  3. wiping the Dalvik cache........

The famous 3 wipes [wipe/wipe/wipe] essential before flashing a new ROM, especially going from one generation of Android to the next.

More piccys tomorrow........OK

Ciao

Sorry Guys, the phone is still as I said last night with the Sorry etc. I just cannot get into the phone. Orange say the phone has to be changed, if this is the case I cannot delete anything I have put on the phone, would it be better to buy a new SD card for when the phone goes back?
