Default Launcher (processs.com.android) errors

Hi everyone

Hope someone can help me with this.

My rooted SF has been working fine. I deleted some apps from my phone as it was getting a bit sluggish (YouTube, Your Orange) and cleared the cache on my gmail. Since I've done that I keep getting the error message "the application Launcher (process com.android.launcher2) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again". This repeatedly pops up which is effectively locking me out of the phone and I can't get into any settings to try and fix it.

I've tried doing a reset but it hangs on the FTM screen and doesn't do anything else.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Is there no way you can get in to anything at all? Did you just delete the apk files or rename them?

Thanks for your response.

I deleted them using Astro file manager (I think - cant check the name as I can't get into the phone!)

Do you recall if you had USB debugging enabled?

I've a feeling you're stuck then unfortunately, I take it you can't get into any of the phones menus at all?

What else did you delete or was it just youtube and Your Orange?

Can you get in to the apps menu at all? Things don't look too good if you can't get USB Debugging on at least.

Thinking about this you might be able to install a custom ROM via the TPT method? Would that be acceptable?

When I connect the phone via usb to the pc I can see that debugging is on from the top bar - I just can't do anything!

I'd be willing to try anything - I did see the TPT method in some of the forums but I could do with some help in understanding exactly what I would have to do.

Thanks El Presidente!

No problem! I'll need to find out if USB Debugging is on before we choose how we get another ROM on there to sort you out.

There's a section in this post called Mini SDK: http://androidforums.com/faqs/443072-adb-guide-updated-12-05-2011-a.html

Download the zip file from that, then follow the instructions for the install. Once setup, connect the phone to the PC open a command prompt, navigate to the SDK-tools folder you created and type adb devices. That will help me ascertain if USB Debugging is enabled and what we need to do next. If you see your phones serial number, we should be good to go.

Does that all make sense?

There's a post here with pics on the adb device stuff if it helps too: Forcing Apps to install to the SD Card without root

I need to head out for a bit so if you want to hang fire with trying the above till later, and I can go in to a little more detail if you want? If it all looks ok, then fire on, post the results and I can see what we need to do when I'm back.

Thanks for all the clear instructions! Ok, so far so good. I've installed the software and it found the phone when I ran the command.

Excellent, you have USB Debugging on which means you should be able to get a custom ROM on there which should sort your issue.

Are your contacts etc backed up to gmail? Because you don't have access to your phone, your data will be wiped unfortunately, but at least you'll have your phone. Also, do you remember if you were a Gen 1 or Gen 2? If that means nothing, when did you get your phone?

I don't think they are backed up but thats my own stupid fault for not making sure that they were! Its not a big deal. I think its a gen1 - I bought it from Argos I think. Either that or Tesco about 14 months ago.

Thanks again for all this - I really appreciate it!

No worries, we're here to help.

I'm 99.9% sure it'll be a Gen 1 if it's that old.

Take a look here: Install ClockworkMod Recovery On The Orange San Francisco / ZTE Blade and use method 2 for installing clockwork, choose your ROM and off you go.

Have a read through and let me know if there's anything that seems confusing before you do anything though. Shout if you get stuck.

I think I've updated the drivers ok but when I turn the phone on with the vol up button pressed down for 5 secs the green man doesn;t stay on the screen and the phone boots up as normal.

Rather than for 5 seconds, keep your finger on it till he doesn't go away.

Even when I keep it pressed down he goes off and it boots up.

That's annoying. Try volume down (although I'm pretty sure that won't work either). Also, try connecting the phone and use ADB commands (similar to the post a few up) and type adb reboot bootloader after adb devices.

If it doesn't work, we'll go for TPT.

Nope - vol down takes me to the FTM screen which does nothing. ADB thing is saying the device is offline.

Ok - I realised that I didn't put the adb command in properly - redone it and put clockwork and the new ROM on. Thanks a million!
