Don't know this one

If you have the Phandroid news widget on your screen, it will be refreshing itself. I know that when you get a PM, you will get notified in the notification bar.

There are two running services for Phandroid:
ForumPMService and NewsService

Playing around with it, I see that the 'auto sync' for news and 'PM notification' is auto checked off. If you don't want it to 'run in the background', you can uncheck these.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have the 'Auto sync' feature unchecked which I assume means 'do not auto sync'. Is this correct? I also have the 'PM notification' unchecked as well. I do not have the widget on the screen.

If I go to 'Settings>Applications>Running services' the items that are running in the background are 'ForumPMService' and 'NewsService'. Together it shows them using 25MB. If I look at cache being used by the app it actually states 7.41 MB and not the 7.5MB I stated earlier.

I am curious if others show the same stats on their phones and if this would be considered normal for this app; or if its just me.

Wemm my guess is that all of the text and graphics in the news items have to go somewhere... and it probably wouldn't be terribly efficient if they had to download each time someone clicked a news item.

On my phone both services are running and it's showing 11mb in use. CPU utilization, on the other hand, looks to be minimal for either process.

Really need an option to set the default screen zoom. Moving between thread pages returns to the current default even after zooming. It gets a little annoying after a while.

Maybe an option to keep the screen always-on when the app is open.

Yes, you are correct with that. In setting there's an option of how long the news data is cached on your phone.

Quote:
Period of storing: News for selected period will be stored on your phone

I'm not sure why it's that long tbh. I would much prefer if it's 1 day...

My thoughts exactly. 1 day, 3 days, 1 week and 2 weeks is more than enough.

With the Android news/gossips that come out, I can barely keep track with it. If I miss something that's a week old, it's old news that's like 6-8 pages back on Phandroid...I usually just read what's in the past 3 days.

This morning battery manager said that the Phandroid app had used 3% of the battery. I don't have anything set to auto-update and PM notification is off. I hadn't used it this morning. It's the first time it has happened. I FC'd it and no problems after that. Maybe I just backed out of it wrong or something :/

Thanks, Roze! I had uninstalled the app because the running in the background was completely borking my phone. I'll try re-installing and playing with the settings.

Often get "error" and "Check network connectivity" (or something) even though connection is present.

That may be because of the database errors the forum has been experiencing.

Yeah. In the Dolphin or stock phone browser, there is either the regular "database error" or sometimes a blue and white, "we're working on it" message.

Another benefit of the Phandroid app: no-nonsense, one word error message when the site is momentarily down.

Why does the phandroid app need access to phone identity & serial numbers? :-(

Rob's having a remote control app of some sort developed. The leak said it has something to do with knee-capping errant members.

Don't tell.

Was wondering if there is a way to mark a forum as read using the new APP? Currently the way I do this is to physically go to the website from my computer and select "Mark Forum Read". Is there a way to do this from the App?

Update to the application now available in the market.

It updates the currently installed market version. The beta.. beta.. install available to staff/premium should remain unaffected.

Rob may post a changelog here.

Should I uninstall the one I've got installed (it's from the last one posted here) before upgrading to the one in the market, or will you be posting the update here - because they don't install on top of each other.

Is it pointless to leave the beta... beta installed though. If the features in the beta beta have been implemented in the market version then it seems, for the time being, that there is no need for 2 versions to be installed

Your welcome but i meant to frame my post as a question... (mostly directed at phases)... That IS how i am looking at it, plus the beta beta was FC'ing like crazy so i think for now i will as well be getting rid of that one and sticking with the market one only.
I didn't like having both installed in the first place but wanted to leave market one so i got the update as soon as possible. I think in the future i will just leave one or the other installed and switch back and forth as market updates and newer betas come out

Well if the features have been moved over to the market version then there is no point, correct. Just keep an eye out for a new version of THAT one testing more upcoming features.

I'm saying you can remove the version from the staff/premium original beta thread - but check back often as we may release another .apk to test before pushing to market.

I'm having two problems with the updated version. First, links posted in threads don't open up the browser anymore. I tried re-booting but still links don't pull up the browser.

Second, the app does not remember the Sort order for threads. I like to view threads with newest posts first, but it always defaults back to an alphabetical sort.
Thanks.

Im finding the news and pm services take up a lot of RAM between them. Upto 60MB sometimes.

I manually refresh pm and don't use.news..

Would it be possible in a future update to only run these services if the user uses that functionality

Still doesn't show new posts accurately needs a better notification system for new posts and maybe an auto refresh

Yep, subscriptions are listed on order of latest post, other forums are listed alphabitically.

Thanks.
Some more info on the first issue. It seems standard links to websites do open up the browser. However if you have a link to a file, the older version used to open up the browser and start downloading the file. The new version does absolutely nothing. It would be great if this could be fixed as this is the primary method i download roms/themes/kernels.

Thanks!

If you go to Menu -> Sort Threads and choose "By last post desc", it goes back to normal!

My only gripe with this is that if you back all the way out of the app, you need to change the default sort again.

Kind of annoying to be honest!
