Default New photon 4g owner

I gust upgraded from the Evo 4g to the Photon 4g and have a few question. The answers are probably out there but I've missed them so here I am. I've already rooted the thing (one-click rooting=AWESOME!) but am looking for a step by step for unlocking the bootloader because I hear it's a little complex. Also is it worth it to flash new ROMS? After I rooted and flashed CM7.1 on my Evo, it was glitchy as heck so I'm curious.

Secondly, for the love of God can someone please help me make this battery last longer cause it's not a whole lot better. Other than that I love this phone, that dual core is a difference maker. I had another question but now I'm drawing a blank so this will work for now I suppose. Thanks to all that will help. I need all the help I can get. Thanks.

P.S. - Why in the world is this phone EOL already?! Hopefully they come out with a Photon 2 that has simliar stats to the Atrix 2 (or the 3 that I read some rumors about-wow)!

I'm still stock & un-rooted/locked bootloader, mainly because unlocking the bootloader breaks 4G WIMAX on this phone.

Just wanted to put that out there in case breaking 4G is a deal-breaker for you.

The most up-to-date information on ROOTING/BOOTLOADERS/ROMS can be found at http://www.xda-developers.com

Thanks Kolio. I had read that somewhere but I'd also heard that one of the Rom's out there actually had fixed that but I guess not.

Also can anyone tell me how to get my apps to my actually external sd card. I downloaded App2SD but it only moves them to "media area" - which I'm assuming is the internal storage.

Finally, I had to get a superuser update from the developer and I'm supposed to reboot into recovery mode and install it but I can't seem to get there. Can someone direct me here please? Thanks again.

Out of curiosity, why do you need to move your apps to the sd? I messed with that on the Evo, but on the Photon it seems unnecessary -- I have over 150 apps installed and still have tons of free space on internal.

But in general, you can find answers to most of your questions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20331557

So for recovery, if you don't want to unlock (and thus lose 4g), look at the video for installing "bootstrap recovery" - that's the locked work-around.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250697
Just remember that you can only flash roms and mods that say they are for "locked."

Also, to really improve my performance, since the locked ROMs are limited, I flashed this:

I don't really need to move my apps but I try to keep them organized cause I'm kind of anal about that sometimes.

I finally got around to installing bootstrap recovery and that seems to work nicely. Now, I'm trying to find an up to date list of Roms and was hoping that I could get everyones opinion as to the best locked Rom. I'm just wanting to improve performance and hopefully a better battery life.

Also, thanks for the links. Headed over there now.

Default Can someone give me a hand please?

I'm rooted but still locked and have successfully flashed RockoRom on my Photon and am loving it. The only problem that I'm having is that everytime I reboot for any reason, anywhere from 2-8 apps will just be gone. I always have to go into Titanium Backup to restore them. Not a huge deal but very annoying so if someone could give me a hand, I'd appreciate it.

Is the storage set up differently w/the ROCKO ROM?
Meaning, can you actually move apps to your external SD Card, or, is the storage similar to stock?

I'm not sure if the sd storage is different. I don't believe that I can put apps directly on the sd as when I'm using App2Sd, I can only move it to "media area". I'm not sure exactly how the storage is set up on Rocko Rom, but it's quite stable and seems the same as stock so I'm assuming it's similar. I've wondered if there was a connection there also but I can't find a pattern to which apps are just gone.

Try a different ROM and see if you have the same issue. It may be the ROM or there may be something else going on. Another option is to go back to stock and run the beBlur script.

I've had the same disappearing act w/apps on the stock ROM.
Some have suggested moving any apps that are stored in the media area to the phone area.
Just another suggestion, no concrete evidence that this helps, but, it certainly couldn't hurt anything.

I've also tried the Skinny4g rom. I didn't stick with it long as I like Rocko better but I don't think it did it. What other Roms are there for a locked bootloader? Also what is beBlur script?

Never had any reports of that with one of the other locked ROMs or with deblur/debloat. Then again nobody ever uses that other ROM for some reason.

Lokifish, with your Imperium Initiative ROM, can it be overclocked with a locked bootloader. I haven't yet been able to find the ability to overclock with any other ROM. I saw that yours mentioned it but am unsure if it can be done with bootstrap recovery as opposed to Clockwork.

You have to be unlocked and have an overclock kernel installed. There's no way to overclocked a locked Photon. Run the locked version for a while. It's the fastest locked ROM available for the Photon right now. It was designed so that after you put on some widgets and eyecandy it uses the same or less ram than stock. So loaded down with stuff it's on average still faster than the Photon is out of the box. Some may not like the theme color but there really is a reason for it.

To give you an idea of what I mean by fast, I run the unlocked version with a cap of 750MhZ and shut off the second core. It's still about as fast as my OG Evo is even though it's running Launcher Pro (with calender and sms widgets), Beautiful widgets and a bunch of other junk.

Loki, I was going to give the locked version a shot but the download link here: [ROM][DE-BLUR] (Locked/Unlocked) Imperium Initiative v1.0.5 - xda-developers isn't working. I downloaded iLivid but it keeps saying "problem in server". Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Just click on the link and it takes you to my website. In the downloads section, click on Photon then ROMs then LOCKED_Imperium_Initiative. I don't hotlink so I can get at least some money to cover costs.

Ok, it finally let me download. Is there anything special to do or just flash it like any other bootstrap ROM? Thanks again.

Flash it with bootstrap. Nothing else special is required. Also would you like THIS as well? I'm working on something that make may this possible for root only users.

Loki, I'd sure give it a shot. Seems like it would be pretty cool. Question on it, I use Droid TV Primetime. Would that allow me to use that on my tv? Any ideas as to when you may have a version for locked bootloaders?

Not sure about Droid TV Primetime as I haven't used it.

Umm, can someone please lend me a hand. I did my nandroid backup to prepare to flash the new Rom and after I wiped the Dalvick (I know I spelled that wrong) it said "back button disabled". I attempted reboot recovery and now I'm basically soft bricked. My business partner (much more phone savy than I) is attempting at the moment to restore back to stock via RSD Lite but RSD Lite won't see the phone although windows makes that ding sound when we plug it in. Any help would be appreciated.

Update: Well crap! It would seem my phone is hard bricked. No idea what happened. Got the phone to be seen on RSD Lite on another pc but it goes throught the process of installing the stock, unrooted .spf but it gets to 100% and won't get past "waiting on re-enumeration". It finally says fail and my phone screen looks very bad. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

What recovery were you using (hopefully bootstrap) and how did you try to get back into recovery?

You say you are hard bricked so the phone doesn't turn on at all then correct?

Well I guess it's a soft brick as I can turn it on and get into the locked recovery. I was using bootstrap recovery to flash all of the Roms. I had just wiped the dalvic cache and then it said "back button disabled" and the back option wasn't there anymore. I think clicked went up and down a couple of times and it said "back button enabled" but it still wasn't there. Finally, I clicked "reboot recovery" and it reboots but gets stuck at the initial Motorola symbol.

My business partner and I used RSD Lite to try to go completely to stock using an .spf (or is it .sbf, the correct one I just can't remember the appropriate abbreviation) but it failed 3 times on two different computers. I can't get into the locked recovery (not bootstrap) and can format cache and I think it was factory reset but they did nothing. Thanks for helping, I'm really not wanting to buy another phone. Thanks.

Where did you get rsd lite and what sbf were you trying to flash? There are different versions of rsd and sbf's. ( I'm trying to get an idea as to where things are at)

You should be using rsd lite 5.6 and 198_6 or 198_7 sbf. Also did you have a lot of apps installed?

My partner said he downloaded them from qbking77 links on his youtube site. It was RSD 5.6 and 198_6 which was what on the phone originally.

I have never used qbking77's stuff but I guess his stuff is ok. All I know is that I root/unlock/relock as many as 10-20 time a day using my root/unlock/relock pack and never had an issue. Alright, try the following:

  1. Leave the phone unplugged
  2. Hold vol down and power til you see fastboot
  3. hit vol down til you see recovery
  4. hit vol up
  5. You should have a screen with a triangle and android
  6. hit both vol up and down at the same time
  7. You should get a recovery menu (it may take a second or two)
  8. select wipe/reset to wipe the phone
  9. reboot phone holding vol down and power til you see fastboot
  10. hit vol down til you see rsd then hit vol up
  11. You should see "rsd mode enabled"
  12. flash the sbf (it may take a couple tries to get it to take)
RSD lite may give a fail on the "rebooting phone" phase but this happens all the time ignore it.
If you get a modem failed to start error, pull the battery and reboot
(this may take a couple tries as well)

Got you. I'll catch up with you tomorrow then. Go to my site and dl the root/unlock/relock pack (the big one). It has everything you need in it. Try that and see if it works. The big pack includes 198_7 which is what the custom photon roms are based on.

Will do. Loki, thank you for all of your help as I'm still really new to the phone flashing/rooting area. It's much appreciated.

Update: I logged in to work from home to have the dl's done by the time I'm there in the morning. One of the dl's is w/bootstrap and one without. Does it matter which I use? Thanks again.

Well it looks like I'm up that infamous creek w/out a paddle. I left it plugged into my computer last night to charge for this morning. The problem is that once I got to the shop, it won't turn on. The only way that I can get to anything is if it's plugged into the wall. I left it plugged in for a couple of hours this morning but it still wouldn't turn on. I'm going to leave it here at the shop for the evening and come back later to see if that helps. I'll post back when something happens...or doesn't.

Sorry about not getting back to you on this. I had to go out of town for a couple days.

I've run into the dead battery/soft brick before and it needs to be plugged in to a wall charger not a computer to charge. If after charging you can at least get RSD mode there's hope on getting the phone running again. I will pm you later today with a possible solution to this.

Unless you are transferring files, try not to use your computer as a charger. The Photon will actually enter a "data transfer mode" without even having a battery installed if plugged into a computer.

No apology necessary. Just appreciate the help.

I just ordered a wall charger that will get here tomorrow. As soon as it gets here, I'll get the battery charged and then give RSDLite a shot with the sbf file that I downloaded from you. Even though this phone came with 198_6, it shouldn't matter to flash _7 correct?

Thanks again.

Make sure you have at least a 50% charge. Below 50% you run the risk of having the battery die while flashing which is a bad thing.

You should be fine with 198_7 as all 2.3.4 ROMs are based on 198_7. Any time I flash back to stock 198_7 is what I use.

Awesome, good to know. Yeah, I'll probably charge the thing for 3 or 4 hours before I try flashing again. I'll keep you updated. Thanks again.

Loki, thank you for those files. I actually talked to a friend of mine that also owns and Photon and an extra battery. He came over and let me use the extra battery. Your .sbf file worked fantastic. Already rooted and am syncing everything after flashing your Rom. The only thing I'd like to know is if there's a way to have each percent show on the battery icon for your Imperium Rom? Thanks.

My friend unlocked his bootloader on his Photon and is wondering about unlocked Roms. Could someone point me to a list of stable unlocked Rom that have at least some directions so that i can send him that direction? Thanks a lot.
