Thoughts:
It seems like typical corporate greed. Corporations putting patents on things that technically should have no patent. You see you cannot patent a math formula and what is a program but math formula's it is functions and routines. So technically they are not supposed to be given Copyrights. Open Source is suffering because some people want us to pay them for thier Systems that we have no idea what they are actually doing. Had it not been for Open Source the truth about Carrier IQ would have never been revealed. We have the Freedom Of Speech Guaranteed to us by Our Constitution. Are We going to sit back and allow Corporations to continue to take away our rights? Are we going to allow them to put out what ever kind of personal "evidence" gathering tools and disguise them as "Legitimate" apps? How long have we allowed Apple and Microsoft to do the same exact thing? Privacy acts are in pure violation by these types of Corporations and our Government is "considering" supporting this. Why is our Government willing to give away our rights? How long will we sit there allowing them to easily amuse us all the while hiding their true agenda. If we do not stand up for our Freedoms then what good are they? We must never surrender.

yeah but who determines it? and what is the criteria they are going to be using? I believe a man should be paid for his work. Please Please do not misunderstand this. I pay for my apps that are pay apps and support dev's when i am able to. I just don't think we should give that much power to any agency. There is a Do process in our Country and we need to abide by it. Once we start giving up that kind of power its like going over the hump on a Roller Coaster it doesnt take long before they start going after other things.
I think the best way to shutdown Piracy sites is to not support them. As believers of Freedom we should make sure that we are being responsible, honest, and have integrity. At the end of the day people will only remember what kind of person you are. That is what's going to last.

if you havent noticed, the government has been steady building prisons or what i like to call "confinement camps" (also while they claim to not have any money) all over the US...the NWO is basically gonna take america, canada and mexico and combine it all into 1 country and make one currency....that being said, the government in totally wiping their @$$es with the constitution..unfortunately its a worthless piece of paper now..you have no rights..other than,to an attorney..lol
but seriously...unless people start seriously rioting in the streets, nothing is going to stop their decision,ESPECIALLY some dumb a$$ name on a petition..lol sorry but lets be realistic here.

This thread looks to be veering waaay of course from the original topic. I've no issue with that, but if you want to keep it on it's current path, I'll move to a more appropriate section (The Lounge or PCA).
It gives the Gov the control to shut down websites if they suspect pirating is going on
yea but that is NOT for the government to decide or handle. if piracy is illegal, and it is, handle it on a "you have been proven guilty" basis. the government has NO right to start policing the internet because SOME of it is used for piracy. hell they could shut down this website because the forums have a root section and rooting phones helps people pirate apps.
ill be signing this, the government has its nose in enough BS, they need to step back and let me live my life, if i break a law, punish me, that is how the law works, not this preemptive "corporate world now has rights too" BS. people before businesses, the government has lost sight of that one. its a sad world when the rights of a business come before the rights of a citizen!

Please check out the SOPA thread in this forum.
SOPA gives private corporations the ability to have the government do their bidding. Note well the industry admissions that they got sites shut down for piracy knowing full well in advance that no piracy occurred.
I applaud XDA for their decision. Some of us have been following been following and posting about SOPA for months - this is an issue that affects us all and anything to raise voter awareness and ire, I am for, personally.

couldn't agree more. I read that wikipedia was considering doing something like this, I wanna say there were just going to have each page open to a "Stop SOPA" kind of page and then 'click to continue' ... but I don't think they ever went through with it.

About them shutting down -
a) I must applaud them for raising awareness of the proposed bills... and they are sticking to their guns, also respectable.
b) dufus is right, with them down, a lot of people will be a bit in the dark as to what to do with their phones. Now, this could lead people to new sites - which - who knows.. maybe there is a site with even more know-how than xda out there that we just don't know about? o.O
