Default Elderly man loses home over a $134 tax bill

Left with nothing | The Washington Post

Just a confirmation that you do not own anything, you don't pay the rent to the government, they just take your home away from you.

From cited source, "The hardest hit: elderly homeowners, who were often sick or dying when tax lien purchasers seized their houses."

The US capitalism at its finest, kill off the sick and old. Wonder how much the politicians got paid for sitting up this deal for "tax lien industry".

Don't confuse capitalism for cronyism and mixed economics.

I forgot to mention that lien buyers know what they are getting themselves into, they know they are going to kick some elderly person because houses are paid off. It's just a sick thing to do. I don't know how would anyone sleep at night knowing they kicked out some old guy from his house over $100 bill.

Don't think we've ever seen capitalism without either of the latter ..

Contrary to popular belief, there was extensive government intervention in the US economy even at the supposed height of 'unbridled' capitalism in the 19th century. In fact, historians generally agree that the growth of the US economy through the 19th century was primarly driven by interventionist government policies - primarily tax policies - and industrial subsidies. There are some superb lectures about it all on iTunes U.

Oh - and cronyism has been around everywhere and forever

Isn't that the truth? No, we've never seen what capitalism would be like without cronyism or corporate welfare... However, in this day and age, with the way the system is, it would be hilariously dystopian if it happened and people kept their current attitudes. Hilarious in a dark way.
