I went through and tried this, and when I run Poot, after I'd downloaded and installed several additional things, I get

Edit- Success! The bad news.. I'm not entirely sure how I did it. I downloaded every version of poot I could find (6!) and ran all of them one by one. One quit with a fatal error immediately, 3 others gave me error 64 as above, and 2 gave me an error 22 and said rooting was unsuccessful. I just ran all 6 one after the other, and then restarted the phone out of frustration. I ran Superuser just to see if anything worked.. and it was rooted! Rootcheck verified it. I have renamed system/etc/security/otacerts.zip as warned.
Now to free up some space. I've never had a rooted phone before- how do I get rid of all the built-in apps I don't want? Anyone have custom ROMs?
I reboot and check for root- Poot thinks it is, but rootchecker says it's not. I also can't run SuperSU or superuser, so I think it's not... any help on how to get poot to root? LG-Enlighten android 2.3.4 vs700zv5 kernel 2.6.35.7+
